Rock Star: Supernova – Recap – Episode 2-10

Time for the week 5 results show. We actually get the opening credits this week, and to my surprise, the theme song is still “New Sensation”. Who’da thunk it?

We again have an hour to fill, so we see that last night at the house, Lucas beats himself up over his crappy performance. Back at the theatre, he admits he should be in the bottom three. Dana is now a rebel without a cause because she’s got a tattoo. Oh, and Brooke Burke has stolen Jennifer Lopez’ dress about 6 years after she made it famous. Someone needs to tell Brooke that being 6 years behind the times is Julie Chen’s domain.

So now it’s time for the encore, and the “band” asks who thinks that they deserve it. I think I see Storm and Dilana raise their hand, and maybe Zayra. Ryan needs to be prodded before raising his hand, and sure enough, he gets the encore for his solo performance of “Losing My Religion”.

Now it’s time to find out who was in the bottom three during the voting period. But first, Brooke tells us that Microsoft has decided to muscle in on MySpace territory with their own blog community. She says it in a much kinder fashion though

OK, now it’s REALLY time to find out who was in the bottom three during the voting period. Brooke tells Toby, Jill, Dana, Zayra and Patrice (!) to stand up. Everyone else is safe.

Dave is a bit surprised that Lucas isn’t there, and Tommy’s kinda surprised about Patrice. But the first person facing elimination is…

Jill Gioia. Logic dictates that Jill will need the performance of a lifetime to stay around. And she does, singing “Alone” by Heart. She’s apparently taken the comments from Dave and the “band” to, um, heart because she’s toned down her voice a bit and really trying to sing the song with both power and pitch, as opposed to trying to overpower the song last night. It’s really good – the “band” gives her a standing O – but will it be enough to keep her around?

Brooke now reveals to us that a couple of singers skipped House Band practice today, and they were Dana and Toby. And sure enough, our second member of the bottom three is Dana Andrews. Apparently she went to the spa. She’s going to sing “House of the Rising Sun” by The Animals. It’s a good rendition, but something feels a bit disjointed, like she and the band didn’t really practice this together. Still, Rafael’s guitar licks are pretty darn awesome.

The way I see it, things break down like this – if Toby joins Dana in the bottom three, Jill will likely go home. Zayra is obviously going to bring something bizarre, but it will be a toss-up as to who goes. And Patrice is likely to stay unless she royally screws up her performance.

So Brooke opens the envelope and says “Toby… you’re safe”. Toby was in fact all ready to prove himself onstage. Then Brooke does the same to Zayra, but it doesn’t hold the same suspense – fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.

That means that the final member of the bottom three is Patrice Pike, and she’ll sing Jeff Buckley’s “Eternal Life”. Solid if unspectacular performance, which probably makes her safe, and puts Dana in real danger of going home.

So we get some deliberation from the “band”, and afterwards, Gilby tells them that their reality show task is to write a new song based on a track the “band” will provide them. Given that we got “Pretty Vegas” out of this last season, Mark Burnett is obviously hoping that lightning strikes twice.

Gilby goes on and tells Jill that she’s safe. Dana, they’re not sure if she can evolve quickly enough to front the “band”. And Patrice being in the bottom three despite having the backing of Tommy Lee bothers the “band”. Let’s be honest though – the voters know full well who are the contenders and who are the pretenders here, so it’s not like this is the last we’ll see of Patrice in the bottom three.

Anyways Gilby hands off to the Tommyhawk, and he axes Dana. No real surprise there. Her development was hitting another ceiling, so it was just her time.
