Big Brother 7 Recap – Week 5 Episode 3

Archive

As you may have already noticed (seems like Julie picked up on this idea as well so if you saw the show, so it seems pretty noticeable. Other than this comment in the parenthesis, the rest of the intro was written before the show aired), tonight marks the end of one of the Big Brother seasons. Alison was evicted the first leaving Erika as the only season 4 player in the game. The next two weeks of course Nakomis and Jase were eliminated which leaves Diane as the only season 5 player still in the running. And seeing as Diane and Erika are on the block tonight, a season will be eliminated tonight.

And even more importantly, my week one, very little information to go on pick for Diane to win it all is at stake. So how will things turn out? Well, let’s find out.

As the show opens, Julie wonders how far James will go for revenge to introduce us to veto nominee ceremony fallout. We see Will in the DR and he thinks Janelle made a very dumb mistake. Will has divided S6 and now he wants to shatter them completely.

Diane, Danielle and James are talking in the backyard and none of them are very happy about this turn of events. James tells them that he wants to band everyone together to eliminate season 6 from the house (presumably excluding himself from that equation).

We then see Marcellas bemoaning Janelle’s actions. To say he thinks less of her now would be an understatement. He pumps Janelle up to the top of ‘season 6 people to get rid of as quickly as possible’ list.

A little later on Danielle and James tell Will and Boogie they want to form an alliance wit them for the final four. In the DR, not surprisingly, Will and Boogie are doing another of their phone call conversations, laughing about the foolishness of James and Danielle.

Before we go to our first commercial break, Julie chats with the houseguests. Will jokes about being ready to go if Julie wants to send him home, Boogie is concerned his foot injury could hamper his competition performances and Marcellas makes ominous threats re: the people who recorded the wake-up calls.

Julie introduces the two different strategies of the nominees next. It seems like Diane is trying to make deals with people while Erika’s strategy consists solely of turning up whenever Diane is trying to have a conversation. This is either a nice strategy on Erika’s part or an insane level of paranoia. You be the judge.

It seems that back before the power of veto competition quite a few of the houseguests had already promised Erika their vote. Danielle and James seem quite behind the idea of changing things so they can send a message to Janelle/keep Diane around.

Chilltown is approached. Boogie tells Danielle they don’t want to break their word with Janelle. If they promise something and don’t follow through it’ll hurt them in the long run. When James talks to Will he says they (both he and Boogie) are open-minded about the possibility of keeping Diane in the house.

Janelle is waiting in the HoH room to speak with Julie. She immediately denies having any feelings for Will; she didn’t feel he was a threat to her and they are only good friends.

When asked about who she trusts in the game, she says she still trusts all the people in her alliance (including James) and Marcellas. Marcellas isn’t in her alliance but she considers him a really good friend.

We get the first batch of pre-voting thoughts now. James and Boogie give pro-Diane statements while Howie and Kaysar seem to view her as a threat (not a whole lot is said about Erika).

Up next we get Amy from BB3 talking about Marcellas. After talking about how great her life is and a bit of reminiscing regarding their early friendship in the house, she gets very snarky. She complains about people calling Janelle the new Amy; Amy thinks she’s got much more inner beauty than Janelle and generally runs Janelle down (which really does a lot to support her ‘I’ve got inner beauty’ claims).

Amy contains with the bad blood, moving on to Marcellas. The two don’t talk anymore because he wasn’t loyal to her in the end. She thinks Marcellas would turn on Janelle, even if they are great friends.

Then we get more thoughts on the nominees. Will and Danielle seem pro-Diane while Marcellas is pro-Erika and George is torn between the two.

It looks like the reason we didn’t get any votes revealed ahead of time this week is because it is a live vote. Erika and Diane are given one last chance to try and sway votes (I’m curious as to whether a single vote or veto has ever been swayed through these speeches in the history of Big Brother).

Erika just says she is honored to be in the house and that she really wants to stay.

Diane says she is going to talk really quickly and does so. She says hi to some people outside of the house and then addresses the houseguests. She says she loves them all and singles Marcellas and James out for praise. She seems pretty sure she is going this week and she suggests that in the future people wait till after the veto competition to promise their votes. She may have addressed other houseguests during her speech as she was talking really quickly but after going back to the tape (and turning on closed captioning) I think I got it all.

And now it is time for people to vote. There are 8 people eligible to vote this week. Kaysar, Howie, Marcellas and Boogie all vote to evict Diane. At this point, Diane is eliminated really (seeing as Janelle has made it clear she wants Diane gone and she gets the tie-breaking vote if one is needed) but Julie doesn’t mention this, presumably to draw out the suspense for the slower members of the audience. Will is up next and he votes to evict Erika. George is up next and, while clearly feeling bad about it, he ends any lingering suspense by voting to evict Diane. Julie makes it official that Diane is gone but we still see James and Danielle cast their votes (for Diane to be evicted).

Once the 7-1 vote is revealed, Diane makes her way out of the house. On her way she makes a point to hug everyone except Janelle (gee, wonder why?).

After sitting down with Julie, Diane says she’s not sure what happened with Janelle; she thought they were starting to get along. Apparently Diane found out that Janelle had said a lot of bad things about Diane during season 6 and while Janelle apologized it seems insincere and led to tension between them.

Diane tells Julie she wasn’t a threat and she didn’t have anyone in the game with her. Julie then brings up the possibility of a secret Jase/Diane alliance. Diane says she thinks Jase might have thought they had an alliance but nobody ever said anything to her. She seems like she would have liked to have had a secret alliance with Jase, had he approached her.

And now it is time for messages from the other houseguests. Will says that Diane is a real sweetheart and that people like her don’t do well in Big Brother; he thinks she deserves better. Janelle still seems to think that getting rid of Diane was somehow a brilliant strategy on her part. Howie talks about how he enjoyed looking at Diane around the house. George says her eviction is a great loss and that he will miss her. Marcellas is pissed off at the way she is leaving and promises to evict Janelle if he ever has the chance.

The segment closes out with Diane saying that she hopes the ‘karma boomerang’ comes around (referencing Will from BB5 as some of you may recall) and takes out Janelle, preferably next week.

Everyone is ushered into the backyard for “Caught in a Web”. There’s a giant spiderweb set up with a oversized spider hanging above it. Everyone has to hang on to the web without touching the mat below. The last person on the web is the new HoH. If any part of them touches the mat, they are eliminated. At first I (and many of the houseguests it seems) thought you were only able to hang from the underside of the web which certainly would have made for a shorter endurance competition, but it turns out they only had to climb up from the underside but then are told to climb on top of the web.

Julie introduces a theme of choosing between power and temptation. There are five golden eggs in the backyard and the first five people to leave the competition get to choose an egg. One egg has a transferable slop-free pass good for one week (that also works for George), a second egg allows you to cancel one person’s eviction vote for the week while a third contains $10,000. Julie says the other two eggs “are rotten”.

After everyone has climbed up on to the web, it is raised up in the air to start the competition.

Julie previews the coming week. Most notably she mentions that on next Thursday’s show they’ll be introducing a Coup d’Etat which could give a houseguest the power to overthrow the HoH at a moment’s notice. Julie also invites us to check out the live feed to watch the rest of the endurance competition live.

And then, as with all endurance competitions in Big Brother, something bad happens to the houseguests as we end the show. In this case, they are covered with ‘spider webs’. Many of the houseguests seem to be enjoying being covered with this goob, with George even asking if they are allowed to eat it (presumably it is non-toxic and he’s obviously pretty anxious for not slop).

I really would have liked to have gotten more DR comments from Kaysar and Howie tonight. They seem to be sticking with Janelle (and not even holding a grudge over her lying to them repeatedly). I suspect Kaysar is well aware that if their alliance is shattered, it makes them far more vulnerable so he’s willing to bend over backwards to keep the group together but I would like to hear his opinion on the matter.

I’m a little disappointed that Diane went home this week. Partly because she was my early pick to win (I figured S6 and Chilltown were such large targets that most of them would go out pretty quickly) and partly because I like Diane a lot more than Erika. I assume being incredibly dull is part of Erika’s strategy to avoid being targeted and so on. While that may be a good strategy, it isn’t a very exciting one to watch play out.
