Puffy AmiYumi – Splurge Review

Website: Puffy AmiYumi

The Inside Pulse:
The duo of Ami Onuki and Yumi Yoshimura return with their fifth album, Splurge. Perhaps unfamiliar to the casual music fan, just ask around the elementary school set: “Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi” is a Cartoon Network staple. Yes, it’s J-pop, but not in the traditional sense; dragging in help from Butch Walker, John Spencer, and Dexter Holland of the Offspring, there’s more of a mellow American influence that keep things from straying into bizarro-Japan territory. And no, it’s not an album made for kids.

Positives: If you’re familiar with J-pop, dismiss your prejudices. Opening track “Call Me What You Like” is silly and fun, “Tokyo I’m On My Way” is a ska-infected romp, and “Mole” rounds out the good times. It’s just a happy, bouncy, smiley album all around. One would expect that from a couple of girls who have a children’s show, but the big names recruited help the album from becoming too kidlike for an adult to enjoy.

Negatives: Alas, it’s still really dippy pop music, and about half of the songs are completely forgettable. Try not to listen to the lyrics, which are expectedly ridiculous and goofy, and enjoy the atmosphere for maximum enjoyment.

Cross-breed: Oh goodness. Stacy Q Goes To Japan?

Reason To Buy: Although this is likely strictly for fans of J-pop and kids’ shows, at least it’s fun and listenable even to those who don’t care for the kitsch.
