Murtzcellanious: LIVE Canadian Idol Recap – August 8

Archive

Time for another results show. I was looking forward to this one because like last week’s show when Brandon Jones was eliminated, the results could go anywhere. I predicted a bottom three of Steffi, Eva and Rob, with Rob getting the boot but we shall see.

This week’s show started with a fast and furious flurry of performances. Former STYX singer Dennis DeYoung and Roger Hodgson of Supertramp were the guest instructions this week and the show started with a group performance by each of them wit the Idols.

Both men chose to sing medley’s, with Hodgson highlighting the affair with a performance with the Idols of “Give A Little Bit.” Tyler Lewis seemed particularly into it. One of the things that I appreciate the most about Idol is their attention to detail and for the Hodgson performance, the male Idols were standing while the females were sitting. Not a big deal, but still a nice touch and one that I noticed.

After the first two performances, I thought to myself that Ben had said on Monday’s show that DeYoung and Hodgson would be performing together on-stage for the first time. Just as I wrote that down, he said that they would be coming back for more.

Time for a recap of Monday’s performances.

Commercial.

After the break, it was time for more from Hodgson and DeYoung. They still didn’t perform at the same time, and DeYoung was clearly the crowd favourite after performing hits like “Mr. Roboto” and “Come Sail Away.”

Commercial.

During the break, the couches were set up.

Front row: Rob, Steffi, Eva.
Back row: Chad, Craig, Ashley and Tyler.

Ben started going through the list. With the competition starting to wind down, there was no longer a bottom three. It was now a bottom two.

TYLER: SAFE
EVA: SAFE
ASHLEY: SAFE
STEFFI: BOTTOM 2
CRAIG: SAFE
ROB: BOTTOM 2
CHAD: SAFE

Ben asked the judges for their thoughts.

Sass: Standing there with all that grace is a testament.

Farley: I am 50 per cent surprised and 50 per cent not.

Zack: Rob is an incredibly talented, but we are looking for somebody that is exceptional. Steffi, it doesn’t matter what happens here.

Jake: (Referring to next week’s show). When you’re unplugged, it’s all about the words.

No more waiting.

Ben announced the results.

Rob is the next to go.

Once again, Murtz’s knack for predicting reality shows comes through. Rob sang the show out with “She’s Some Kind Of Wonderful” which clearly did not fit the moment.

Oh well.

Next week’s show is a return to Idol familiarity as it returns to the Masonic Temple for two nights only as the AIDS Conference in Toronto will monopolize the John Bassett Theatre. It will be small and intimate as the contestants go “unplugged.”

I will be there.
