Hey Daron how are you today bud? Oh wait a second. I should edit that. No Daron this week folks. We have a special fill-in editor Tim. Hey Tim what’s up bud?

Not too much. I’m happy to be working with you again Jim. Always a pleasure to edit these columns for you.

How ‘bout yourself? What’s the hap hap? (Am I a master of current slang or what?)

I’m doing damn good. This feels odd without Daron but still cool. I look forward to working with you this week.

How about we start this baby up. Just answer anything Daron should. LOL!

What’s this”¦”LOL” you speak of?

Ryan questions our TV viewing habits

Jim and Daron,

Charlie only had three angels, Stan has eleven superheroes. Guess who wins?

Please tell me you watched “Who wants to be a Superhero” (hosted by Stan Lee) on the SciFi channel. It is absolutely hilarious (especially if you are watching with another comic reading friend). If you haven’t seen it, you need to now! If you have seen it, what do you think?

I’ve seen it. I actually quite enjoy it. There’s some interesting challenges and it’s Stan. I like Stan. I had to try it out and now I’m hooked. I do think it could be even better though.

The plot twist this was good. I think it showed that some of these people need to read more comics though. I knew there was something different with each of the challenges so far. They are not as simple as they appear. Stan’s too smart for that.

Tim, have you had a chance to catch the show yet?

At first, I was avoiding it, but positive feedback persuaded me to check out the most recent two episodes. It’s not incredible, but it has a charm to it that cannot be denied. I really appreciated the “disgraced hero turned villain” storyline involving the Iron Enforcer. It is perfectly comic book.

Keep up the great work.

We’ll do our best.

Comics Nexus’s very own Mighty Manolis admits a dark and terrible secret

Hi Jim

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/94/Maggott00.jpg

I just need to point out, Maggott is one of my favorite X-Men of all time. I really wish he could have survived into one of the current incarnations. Here we have a classic Marvel character, his origin is fueled with tragedy, it ties organically into X-history through his affiliation with Magneto, he has an original set of powers, and most of all, an enjoyable dialogue pattern and life outlook. Go back and reread X-men 70-80, I urge you :)

Alright Manolis. I admit I haven’t read the issues for quite a while, but, with your urging, I revisited them. Maggot isn’t THAT bad. He’s not, in fact, the worst ever. I’ve said that before though. I think Longshot is the worst. LOL! (Again with the LOL. Really Jim…really?) Anyway, the problem with Maggot is that they never did find the best uses for him. They needed to give him a clear role and they just couldn’t.

More on Maggot:

Real Name: Japheth
Former Aliases: none
Identity: Secret
Occupation: Former adventurer
Citizenship: South Africa
Place of Birth: Ottoshoop, Northwest Transvaal, South Africa
Known Relatives: unnamed parents, Lot (brother, deceased), Daniel and two unnamed children (brothers)
Group Affiliation: formerly Generation X, X-Men
Height: 6′ 8″
Weight: 350 lbs.
Hair color: White
Eyes: Brown
First appearance: Uncanny X-Men #345

Powers: Maggot’s digestive system consisted of two enormous sentient slug-like creatures, nicknamed Eany and Meany. Whilst Maggott himself could not eat, his slugs could devour any form of matter with incredible speed. When they finished feeding, they returned to his abdomen and imparted the energy from the matter they absorbed into Maggott’s body. This energy nourished Maggott, temporarily granting him enhanced strength and turning his skin blue. If Maggott was separated from the slugs for an extended period of time, he became extremely weak and risked death.

Wow”¦with a back story like that, it is stunning he never caught on.

Beadle points out a very dysfunctional hero/sidekick relationship

Hi Jim/Daron,

Just reading this week’s column I realized I never got around to addressing one of the questions from last week. You were looking at which sidekicks had taken on the identity of their mentor, and I had one stuck in my head that you didn’t mention. Maverick & Bolt. Chris took on Maverick’s costume and name when Mav became Agent Zero in Weapon X. He did end up gettin’ killed though, so maybe that’s a lesson to us all….

You are correct. Bolt/Maverick II Chris Bradley did take over the role. Heck Maverick/Agent Zero killed him.

So, wait a sec. Maverick saves Bolt’s life. Then he saves the lives of his parents, moves them down to Florida, sets them up with new identities, and makes sure Bolt gets treatment for the Legacy virus. The family’s got to be loving him by that point.

Sometime later though, he kills their son. The one he saved in the first place, right? Boy, talk about conflicting emotions. I guess they could take some solace in the fact that Maverick (as Agent Zero) though Bolt (as Maverick) was a terrorist so it was really a (sort of) accident. Or maybe not. I’m not sure how far the excuse of, “Well, yeah, I killed your son, but I was pretty sure he was a terrorist at the time. Had I known he was just undercover, I never would’ve done it. Honest,” goes these days.

Joe just hates it when comic companies fight

I have noticed that with all the crossovers over the years all the companies have crossed over with, Dark Horse and Marvel never have done one. Dark Horse has pitted Predator and Aliens up against everybody but never Marvel characters. Do the companies have a feud or is there a reason these companies have never done a cross over that anybody knows about? You’d think that if Marvel and DC would do some Marvel and Dark Horse would be able to get along long enough to put some out.

You know, you are correct. Oddly enough I don’t recall Marvel and Dark Horse ever even mentioning the possibility of doing a crossover. I certainly don’t recall reading or seeing one on the shelves. I am shocked at that. I’ve got to think its something odd going on. Maybe there is a feud I’m not sure about. I’ve got to look into this more now.

I can note though that quite a few former Marvel properties are now with Dark Horse. Star Wars and Conan both used to be under the Marvel banner. I’m not sure if that has anything to do with this but it is worth noting.

Any insight on this, Tim?

Sorry, no. I did a quick look around the net and on various comic buying sites and I can confirm that I found no Marvel/Dark Horse collaborations. However, I did not find out anyone even theorizing why and certainly not an out and out statement of feuds, past or present. My interest is certainly piqued now though.

Cory emails and, apparently, he’s better than ever.

Hey fellas…Cory’s back…….and better than ever:

1- What, oh what, does this pic above look like? If this pic doesn’t display Batman & Wolverine, then please tell me otherwise. This if from “The Prestige” starring Christian Bale & Hugh Jackman, and maybe the closest thing us fanboys can get to an inter-company crossover movie. LOL.

LOL. (Dear God, why? Why the LOL?!) Yep that will be as close as you get in many ways. Not to say other actors haven’t worked together too. I would assume there likely have been movies that stared DC actors and Marvel actors. Heck in reality Halle Berry is her own walking crossover as she plays a Marvel and a DC character. But in terms of a true comic book movie crossover”¦this is probably as good as it gets.

Might I note also that the movie looks damn good. Beyond the whole momentary fanboy rush of “Oh my god, Batman and Wolverine are totally talking and hanging out,” I’m still excited for it. I suppose it could be bad, but I just don’t see that happening.

2- So I guess that it is official (sorta). That Thor may no longer respects Captain America, as we believed, unless he is being mind controlled, bankrolled, or blackmailed by Tony. But then again, how the hell do you do either of the three to a Norse God? Any ideas on why this “Thor” maybe a fake or double agent?

Well it can be a fake. No one knows who the D.B. was that got the hammer. The real Thor could possibly still be missing. This one could be Donald Blake. It could not be. It could be an unknown third party (the DB in question) who took the hammer and is working with Iron Man.

It could also be a robot.

I’m just saying.

3- My last point is that how screwed Cap’s side is. Stark has both Thor AND The Sentry on his side (I believe. I think the Sentry’s allegiance is still undefined). Cap’s gotta pull out some big guns for his side to even have a chance in this war. What other big guns are left or not yet introduced??? Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange, Namor, Black Bolt, or the return of Hulk (though his absence may last longer)

Strange seems strongly against the act. I would like to see him join the fight. Namor also is against the act. Both would come in handy on Cap’s side. Black Bolt won’t be involved until after the war. Hulk might come back and if he does Reed and Tony better run. Surfer won’t be involved. He’s in Annihilation. There is help out there for Cap to get; there are plenty of people opposed to the act and they will have to get involved in this soon. The other problem facing Cap is keeping all his forces together.

I’d love to have a great Hulk reveal in Civil War (at a surprise level similar to Tho’s return) but I suspect that the Planet Hulk storyline was organized specifically to take him off the board. I hope I’m wrong, but that’s my impression of things.

4- Btw, what happened to the villain known as Slayback? Bio?

Sure thing

Real Name: Terraerton
Aliases: None
Identity: Secret
Occupation: Unrevealed
Citizenship: Unrevealed
Place of Birth: Unrevealed
Known Relatives: None
Group Affiliation: Formerly Weapon X, Department K
Education: Unrevealed
First Appearance: Deadpool: Circle Chase #1

Height: Unrevealed
Weight: Unrevealed
Eyes: Unrevealed
Hair: Unrevealed

Powers: Cybermorph, with augmented healing factor, strength, agility and speed

History: Sometime in the past Slayback was killed by Deadpool. Ten years later, Slayback returned from the dead and broke into Department K, stealing the Weapon X Program files of Kane and Deadpool. He then tracked down Kane, asking him where Deadpool was. Slayback then took Copycat hostage and tracked Deadpool to Katmandu.
Slayback attacked Deadpool and Copycat, during the fight an A.D.A.M. unit (Zero) became active and destroyed Slayback.

5- Even maybe Ares showing up to help Cap. What about Ares??? Why him, and where would a God of War stand?

Ares is possible. I’ve thought of options on him. He might just join the War because he is the God of War.

He would make a good ally for Cap though. Plus, he has come to respect Hercules as well over the years. I had a little idea too. There will be a death in Civil War 4 that I think will be a big one. It will likely be one of Cap’s people. I think it’s possible Hercules or Falcon will be the one to die. If it is indeed Herc who is killed Ares may come to Earth for revenge.

I could get behind that. Not as exciting as a grand Hulk entrance, but a sensible counterpoint to Tho’s presence certainly. Plus, it would give a reason for Ares to join one of the two Avengers teams that are coming out of Civil War, as the current rumor mill indicates is a possibility.

6- Top 10 Civil War surprises. 1- Thor, 2- Bishop, 3- She-Hulk (because of Tony mistreating Hulk), 4- Deadpool(but they are paying him), 5- The Thing (for leaving), 6- Doc Samson (because of Tony mistreating Hulk), 7- Cable (only because of how he was depicted in his title as a “savior”), 8- Spider-Man (let himself get used), 9- The Sentry (undetermined), 10- Spider-Woman (undetermined). Speaking of Spider-Woman, where is she?

Nice list. Note for Spider-Woman she has been depicted on the Anti-act and non-registered side in Thunderbolts on a computer screen. Where she is now I would like to know as well?

I believe that New Avengers #23 shall contain the answers you both seek in reference to Spider Woman and her allegiances.

7- Damn, as for the villains list last week, how could I forget Thanos & Loki?

I don’t know how you could forget them. It’s like forgetting Doctor Doom. Those two are a few of Marvels best villains ever. Thanos alone is hard to forget.

For shame, Cory, for shame.

8- Speaking of my relationship question last week, what happened in Archangel/Psylocke relationship that they split? And are Meltdown/Cannonball still a couple?

Both couples have split.

Warren and Betsy: Warren had to deal with his family fortune at a time so he had left the X-Men. Betsy stayed and fell for Thunderbird. Warren found out and broke up with Betsy.

As for Sam and Tabitha, it happened while Sam was with the X-Men. He took a vacation to visit his old teammates in X-Force and ended up walking in on Meltdown and Sunspot kissing. Needless to say, the relationship ended after that.

Those mutants”¦so fickle with their love.

Last question- Is it me, or does every guy used in Weapon X (or the majority) come out with a thing for redheads? Deadpool-Siryn, Wolverine-Jean, Sabretooth-Mystique. Is this purely a coincidence or what?

HAHAHA

What? No LOL?

Wolverine has always had a thing for redheads. It’s been there for a long time in comics. He’s had his fair share of relationships with them too. But you are right. Weapon Xers seem to have that habit of going after red heads. Not that most people noticed it but you are correct.

That’s it for me this week. Thanks guys. Cory out. See ya in 7.

Wow slow week for you Cory. I hope you have more next week. Catch you then.

I shall not be here next week, Cory, but I do wish you the best. Please, in my absence, do keep it real.

Alright Daron asked me to cut this up. Here’s what I’m doing. The update on where characters stand stays. I did find a way to shorten it though. I’m going to cover issues now as they come out. I’ll catch you up from last week though.

Issues and synopses:

Fantastic Four #539: Yancy Street Gang locate Captain America’s underground resistance and offer information. The Thinker and the Puppet Master continue their plans for the fight. As Iron Man leads his group and the prisoners away from Yancy Street. Captain America and his team arrive on the scene. Mouse plants a bomb that the Thing is able to save the prisoners from. Cee, however, is killed in the explosion. Thing lashes out at both sides of the conflict. Thing can’t side with either and leaves the country

Civil War: Front Line #5: Ben Urich tells J. Jonah Jameson about the Goblin. Jonah don’t believe him and after being told Norman is in prison fires Ben. Sally Floyd is approached from behind by a man who jabs a banana into her back. He explains to her that the Registration Act has holes in it. Also says she’s being followed and to stop looking for Cap. When Sally arrives at her newspaper and is arrested by SHIELD. Elsewhere Speedball and a bunch of other anti-act prisoners are put into the Negative Zone prison. Elsewhere Wonder Man is asked by SHIELD to find Joe’s Marine Mania owner.

Ms. Marvel #6: Ms. Marvel confronts the Prowler and takes him in for not registering. Wonder Man shows up the next day for a meeting with Stark at the tower. Once there they see Arachne again. Arachne is told to arrest Shroud. Wonder Man and Ms. Marvel must find Araña. Iron Man asks Ms. Marvel if Captain America asked her to join him. Prowler is questioned about the possibility that someone tipped him off and tells them Arachne did. Arachne finds The Shroud. They are shown as lovers and make a run for it. Ms. Marvel and Wonder Man find Araña

There’s another edition of the Marvel Handbook for everyone. Hey Tim it’s been fun having you here.

It was my pleasure. Daron should shirk his responsibilities more often so I can do this.

Cool. I wouldn’t mind doing it again. We both did our parts to fill-in for Daron after all. I’m sure he’ll enjoy reading this one. I know I hope the fans do. Why don’t you sign off first?

Sounds like a plan. Marvel fans, thanks for tolerating my presence this week. Sorry that I’m not a huge X-Men person so I couldn’t provide much info, but I hope I at least proved to be an entertaining diversion.
Take care, Jim.

Alrighty I’ll finish us off this week
