The Gospel Of Wrestling: According to Matthew

And just like that, I’m back!

Not that any of you really missed me. In fact, I would surmise that most of the people reading this could care less and don’t even remember my column. If you want to read up on some of my old columns, please feel free to venture over to my archives and have a look see.

I hope I can continue to make this column a good read for my loyal contingent of followers. We’re doing a weekend round-up thingy now. And I tend to write in a stream of consciousness format anyway, so anything could happen! Be sure to email me you’re opinions too. I actually care.

Gettin’ RAW!

So let’s start out at the top of the week with some of my thoughts on the flagship show.

Now, I haven’t written a column for IP since February, but I have yet to miss a single week of our Beautiful Mistress, the wrestling biz, so let’s just jump right back into it.

The markout moment of the week was, once again, the Flair-Foley promo. Just really good stuff. Foley in particular is just so dead-pan and so real that I can’t help but love everything he says. Flair, God bless him, continues to be so over the top but it works for him.

Cena’s promo and subsequent match with Big Vis was pretty watchable and actually worked in getting me more behind Cena’s efforts to win back the WWE title than anything he’s done in quite some time. That F-U was impressive, it even got a pop out of my girlfriend whose usually in a daydream about anything other than wrestling while we’re watching.

I was actually looking forward to Mickie and Trish going at it for the first time in a long time, when Edge and Lita showed up and interrupted James’ title defense. At least Edge got to cut a semi-shoot promo, and he showed again how strong he is on the mic. The eventual tag match between The Rated R Superstar and Lita against Carlito and Trish was fleshed out pretty well, but it didn’t really build much toward the coming PPV. Very little in this show did.

Getting sooooo tired of the seemingly endless McMahon-DX feud already? Well, me too! Maybe they’ll finally finish this baby up at SS, but until then I would suspect we’ll continue to get a healthy dose of those four in the coming episodes. I did enjoy the Umage-Triple H match for what it was and the Pedigree from Vinnie Mac that ended the show was a pretty nice visual.

Jerry Lawler will forever be the King of Memphis! Great showing from the King, but why so short? I would’ve loved to have seen Lawler and Orton go twenty minutes and really build the crowd heat up for the finish.

It’s been almost a week since I watched RAW, so forgive me if I’m like totally forgetting something, but it was a good show and that’s cool with me. Hell, like many of you, I’m just so starved for fresh wrestling each week I’m getting to a point where anything outside of a Chris Masters match is good for me.

So it looks like the Hulkster is back in the Summerslam match against Randy Orton. Won’t be the greatest match of all-time, but I for one am looking forward to seeing Hogan bury that little f*cker 1-2-3! Of course, a well-timed Brooke Hogan heel turn would light me up too!

E-C-DUB! E-C-DUB!

ECW on Sci-Fi is just getting better and better each week! And as of the end of the show, RVD has been put back in the mix so things are looking awesome for the brand. ECW.com has already announced that next Tuesday we’ll be getting a rock solid main event in the form of a #1 Contender’s Ladder Match between RVD, The Wrestling Machine Kurt Angle and Sabu. I think all of us smarks in the world should be wetting ourselves and thanking the Lord Vince for that one; should be a helluva show with a helluva main event!

As far as this weeks ECW show went, nothing too crazy went down as in previous weeks. I liked Big Show’s promo, and am trying to envision him as REALLY big swarmy sort of 70/80’s Ric Flair character. The Kevin Thorne character could get old real quick, though. Bring on the GANGREL!

I have a secret…Mike Knox is actually growing on me. I thought this would never happen, yet as usual I’m swallowing what Vince feeds me and this guy may end up being pretty cool. He needs more character in character though. And TEST should be fired. Or at least jobbed out to Justin Asshole on a weekly basis. I hate Andrew Martin and I will never, EVER be a Testicle!

Holy shit! I think it’s a good move that we’re getting a Talking Sabu now. The character’s ability to speak and put over his feelings can only improve his longevity on our TVs. The more Sabu the better I say! And the match he had with Kurt in the main event was some nice stuff. More of the same I hope to come!

The return of the Charasmatic Enigma!

Like many of you I really don’t give a shit about Jeff Hardy, but his return should stir things up in the E for a few weeks. If they end up bringing the tandem of the Hardyz back that should at the very least give a new team on Smackdown to vie for titles and maybe Kendrick and London can get a few good matches out of them. Beyond that, I don’t see Jeff accomplishing too much in this run. Maybe another feud with his brother or something, I guess we’ll see!

Hard Justice – Live this Sunday on PPV

So my first inclination is to save the money for Summerslam, but let’s go with this…

Jarrett over Sting with some extracurricular hi-jinks involving Christian and Steiner. Samoa Joe too probably.

Styles and Daniels will retain they’re tag straps. Why? Because they need them.

I think it’s time Jay Lethal win the X-title, so let’s hope that happens.

Joe’s gonna kill Rhyno and Monty. Brown does the job in this one cuz from what I hear he’s on his way out.

I think Sabin will somehow find a way to beat Nash in their match, but one has to wonder how?

Naturals over the other two teams too.

Should be a pretty cool PPV, but I’m not going to die if I miss it. Which I will. What I’m waiting for – like many of you – is the Joe vs. Whomever for the NWA title. That’s going be the good shit right there!

Until next, when I’ll be a little more prepared and whatnot…
