Murtzcellanious: LIVE Canadian Idol Recap – August 21

Archive

After one of Craig’s family members tried to steal my seat and I put my authoritative foot down, it was time for the top five performance show. The program would pay tribute to country.

Sue Brophy introduced the judges and Ben Mulroney.

Some Canadian figure skaters were in attendance, and this totally added to the manliness of the show.

Right before the show started, Ben screamed “ARE YOU READY TO IDOL” in the same style as Michael Buffer. This also added to the manliness of the show. Please note the obvious sarcasm.

The show began and Ben said that the Idols spent last week in Nashville, Tennessee, under the tutelage of Martina McBride. Ben then asked the judges for their thoughts.

Jake: It’s about the sentiment behind the lyrics.

Sass: She’s the authentic thing. She’s the real deal (McBride).

Farley: It’s gonna be amazing.

Zack: Breakthrough as yourself.

The top five Idols then came out. Ben introduced a video package that was hosted by Elena Juatco. The package details all of the Idol preparations as they flew to the country music capital of the world. This was followed by another video package, and this one was a tribute to Martina McBride.

Time for the performances.

Eva Avila
– Sang “Here You Come Again” by Dolly Parton.
– In the opening video, Martina said that Eva’s singing “does something that I connect with” and also said that Eva had a gift.
– To me, the performance is average.
– Nothing about it stands out.
– While Eva looks great, I thought it was forgettable and certainly not indicative of the Idol crown that everybody already seems to be awarding her.
– Not too much to say.

Jake: You did a song and did it Eva.
Sass: Great to see you take command of the stage.
Farley: Well done.
Zack: Sounded hard around the edges. You made it into a Burt Bacharach kind of thing.

Commercial.

One of the Canadian skaters, Emmanuel Sandhu (stop laughing for those of you that know him), sang “Purple Rain” during the commercial break. It was actually pretty good.

Tyler Lewis
– Sang “Suspicious Minds” by Dwight Yoakam.
– In the opening video, Martina advised him to watch the ranginess in his lower register.
– Performance is alright.
– I like it, but definitely not blowing me away.
– It is very similar to Eva’s performance earlier, it’s controlled but definitely not mind-numbing.
– The show seems average tonight.
– Tyler sounds stronger in the final verse.
– Showed more heart and energy as performance went on.
– It’s too bad he didn’t have that at the beginning.

Sass: You made it sound like sweet potato pie.
Farley: Your kinfolk should be real proud.
Zack: That was completely credible.
Jake: I knew you would not have a problem with this (country) and my friend, you did not disappoint.

Commercial.

Craig Sharpe
– Sang “Always On My Mind” by Willie Nelson.
– In the opening video, Martina said that for this song, emotion was really important.
– Craig showing great vulnerability in this performance.
– So far, the best of the night.
– He is amazing at ballads.
– Decent.

Farley: You really stepped up and did well.
Zack: Michael Jackson style country. I want it to be as big and obnoxious as me.
Jake: I actually believed that.
Sass: Craig, sometimes you’re a little sharp!

Commercial.

Steffi D
– Sang “These Boots Are Made For Walkin'” by Nancy Sinatra.
– I didn’t watch the opening video as I was too excited about the performance.
– I thought that this was the perfect song choice for Steffi.
– The vocal sounded a little sharp.
– She also sounded a little nasal-y.
– It was good, but was good only on an average night.
– She is just an incredible performer and is worth the hype.
– I especially liked the segment where she put on the boots during the song.

Zack: You’re the next Canadian Idol?
Jake: Every week I wonder what’s Steffi going to do now? Couldn’t have picked a more perfect song.
Sass: I really enjoyed it.
Farley: Sexy, sassy, sultry, Steffi.

Commercial.

Chad Doucette
– Sang “If You Could Read My Mind” by Gordon Lightfoot.
– In the opening video, Martina said that he was really connecting with certain lines of the song.
– She also said that she “really liked” his voice and that he had a “lot of talent.”
– I thought performance was… BORING!
– He might be putting audience to sleep.
– I don’t think he took full advantage of being in the main event spot (closing out the show).
– I think he is done.

Jake: You capture the sentiment of the words better than anyone else.
Sass: I love your voice.
Farley: When I listen to you on the radio, I’ll know it’s Chad Doucette.
Zack: Should have had Chadisms all the way through the song.

Recap.

Show over.

I think Chad and Steffi will be in the bottom two and Chad takes the long walk home. I really hope that Steffi makes it to judge’s choice next week because I cannot wait to see what they pick for her.
