Rock Star: Supernova – Recap – Episode 2-16

The Rev emailed me to say: You hit the nail right on the head about Ryan’s lyrics. If he would grow a f*ckin’ set, maybe he wouldn’t be a bad rock frontman, but those lyrics stunk on ice.

I really don’t see what Dave sees in Ryan. He’s kinda like Marty 2.0, where he’s listening to the band’s advice, but that doesn’t necessarily make him GOOD, ya know?

Go check out Into The Pit. I’ll still be here.

Results show time. Brooke Burke… the “band”… Dave Navarro.

Reality Segment – Dilana tells Ryan to thank the band for carrying him last night. Then they check out the Not-MySpaces to see what people are saying about them. Someone has it in their head that two winners would be better than one – specifically Dilana and Ryan. Neither one is particularly thrilled with that idea.

Obviously, Dave calls Dilana on this. She basically says that there can be only one. Then Dave asks her about the House Band comment. She tries to stammer her way through an explanation but Dave sums it up for her – the band is pretty much That Damn Good and carried everyone at one time or another.

Ryan thinks it’s easy to say things when you’re on top.

Reality Segment 2 – Everyone goes into the studio to learn this week’s Supernova track. Nobody sounds particularly good, but Toby sounds smooth, at least. These segments continue to make me question as to whether Lucas should still be here.

So it should be no surprise that this week’s Chosen One is Toby Rand, singing “Be Yourself… and Five Other Clichés”. And wow this song sucks. This song is all about the rhythm, folks. The lyrics and melody do nothing for me. Part of it seems to be deliberately spoken word, and yeah that definitely doesn’t work.

Reality Segment 3 – The singers get to do media interviews, although we only seem to see Toby, Ryan, Lucas and Dilana. Dilana is getting hit hard today as they show her saying that Lucas might need help, that Toby is just along for the ride and Magni just wants to go home.

Dave says that you should never slag your peers in the media. Dilana claims to not be a pro at interviews, and that she screwed up. Although to be honest, you’d think you’d have to have done at least a couple of interviews before releasing a single and a music video:

Anyways, Dave turns it around and says that if the singers want to win this, they’ll need to grow thicker skins, seeing as they’ll be fronting an “all-star band” after winning a reality show and all. Semi-mixed message there, Dave. If you can’t take someone’s (especially a peer’s) honest criticism, how are you gonna handle backlash from the mass media?

Bottom three time. Joining Patrice, Storm and Toby is Magni. Storm is seriously chomping at the bit to perform.

The first member of the bottom three is Magni. He decides to sing “Fire” by Jimi Hendrix, and I’m probably not the only one who thought he would wreck his guitar here. I mean, if you’re gonna engage in the wanton destruction of a guitar, why not do it while singing Jimi? Instead, he gives an excellent performance, and even finds time to let guitarist Rafael (“Hoffa”) go nuts. Afterwards, Tommy breaks protocol and tells him that “that was ridiculous”. So yeah, I think he’s safe.

The second member of the bottom three is Patrice Pike, and we’re all but saying goodbye to her at this point. She’s singing “Middle of the Road” by the Pretenders. She too goes the “give Rafael some of the spotlight” route. It’s a pretty good performance, and it’s a nice way to go out.

The final member of the bottom three is… Toby. Storm is once again visibly pissed. He’ll sing “Plush” by Stone Temple Pilots. And he does a pretty darn good job, although the chances of someone not named Patrice going is slim anyways. But instead of letting Rafael shine, Toby gives drummer Nate a moment in the sun, which no doubt pleases Tommy. Still, it wasn’t as good as Patrice.

Time for the Hatchet Man. Gilby first sends Toby back, and then Tommy can’t even bear to look as he sends Patrice home.

Next week it’s viewer’s choice, and we’ll see how the singers do revisiting some of their previous songs.
