Murtzcellanious: LIVE Canadian Idol Recap – August 28

Archive

A big performance show was ready to rock on Monday evening as the top four Canadian Idol contestants are now ready to claim the top prize.

After the standard intro by Sue Brophy, she announced that American Idol contestant, Anthony Fedorov was in attendance. Season two runner-up, Theresa Sokyrka was also in attendance, and host Ben Mulroney said that everyone in attendance would get a free copy of her new CD which officially dropped on Tuesday. In an interesting sidenote, Theresa Sokykra is now the first Canadian Idol contestant to put out two records.

This was followed by a cold opening (pre-taped) to start the show. This focused on Steffi D’s demise last week.

The show started and Ben said that the voting margins last week were “razor thin” and asked if the audience wanted to meet the top four. There was a particularly loud ovation for the “last woman standing” Eva Avila. This would be a theme for the majority of the evening. Ben then asked the judges for their comments, on a night when they picked all of the songs for the contestants to belt out.

Jake: We made selections. We thought, let’s make them look good and also challenge them.

Sass: We were fighting, screaming, yelling and ended up with songs that are really fun.

Farley: These are four names that everyone will hear next year in the Canadian music industry.

Zack: It’s all fantastic material. Tonight, you either put up or… Ben Mulroney (shut up).

Time for the performances. All of the contestants would be singing a pair of songs.

Tyler Lewis
– Sang “Big League” by Tom Cochrane.
– I don’t like the song.
– Beginning is hard to understand.
– No real rock-out moments.
– The show is going by really quickly.
– Nice note at the end, but a bad song choice by the judges.

Jake: Not the best performance you have done.
Sass: There’s a chance you’ll be playing in the big leagues.
Farley: The way you get into the song is realy cool.
Zack: I was all prepared to say ‘he shoots, he scores’ but you came out flat in the third period.

Commercial.

Chad Doucette
– Sang “Hanging By A Moment” by Lifehouse.
– Murtz already predicts the best performance of the evening as this song is perfect for Chad.
– He is singing well.
– Very WEIRD dance moves though.
– Hits a huge note near the end of the song.
– One of his best.
– Really, really, really good.
– His vocal was spot-on.

Sass: You like that song and it shows.
Farley: Really captured the moment.
Zack: First half was deer in the headlights… show some bigtime rock and roll in next song.
Jake: You delivered it, you did exactly what we thought you could do with that.

Commercial.

Craig Sharpe
– Sang “Careless Whisper” by Wham!
– Awesome song choice again by the judges.
– Craig eerily resembles George Michael in the performance.
– Tone is perfect.
– Another good and solid performance from Sharpe.
– This guy is made for the finals.

Farley: You understood why we chose that song for you.
Zack: Fit your pipes and fit your vibe.
Jake: Fantastic vocal performance. No misses, all hits.
Sass: You looked good while you were doing it too.

Eva Avila
– Sang “Would I Lie To You” by The Eurythmics.
– Looks really good wearing a suit and tie.
– Outfit is very cool.
– I think she should be dancing more.
– I don’t particularly care for it.
– I think they could have picked a better and faster song for her.
– Crowd is standing at the end, a standing ovation.

Zack: You filled that suit honey.
Jake: Angry song, it was uncomfortable for me watching you smile doing that song.
Sass: You just kill me!
Farley: You gave people a vision of who you ultimately will be.

Tyler Lewis
– Sang “Tears In Heaven” by Eric Clapton.
– Remarkable improvement from his first song.
– Good choice by the judges.
– Needed a bigger performance and got it.
– Seems much more at ease with the second song.
– Song is moving and haunting.
– Unfortunately the tune was cut down significantly in terms of time.

Jake: Won’t be many dry eyes in Canada tonight.
Sass: You just know how to deliver a song.
Farley: Wish I could give you one more shot at that song. I am sure that the ladies enjoyed watching you ride that horse slowly.
Zack: You’re one of two people who deserve to be in the finals.

Commercial.

Chad Doucette
– Sang “Everybody Hurts” by R.E.M.
– Another great song choice.
– I believe the song choices are so good for Chad this week, that he might be safe, even though he is the favourite to be eliminated.
– Delivers another great performance.
– Chad doesn’t deserve to go home this week.
– He has clearly been the best of the evening.
– Delivers the emotion of the song perfectly and like a seasoned veteran.
– Jake loves it.
– Amazing.
– Gets a semi-standing ovation, but Eva is clearly the audience’s choice this evening.

Sass: You redeemed yourself at the end.
Farley: Coolness of your tone and unique voice kicks it.
Zack: Props to Jake for choosing that for you. I believed that dude. Good on you.
Jake: Thanks for making me look good tonight buddy.

Commercial.

Craig Sharpe
– Sang “Tears Of A Clown” by Smokey Robinson And The Miracles
– Does a hilarious dance to start.
– Meh.
– Not as special as his first performance.
– His “dancing” is still very entertaining.

Farley: Five words. Farley Flex School Of Choreography. Good job!
Zack: You have got the pipes to do it, still waiting for you to bloom.
Jake: That was so entertaining!
Sass: He did a little number from the Yellow Brick Road at the end of that song.

Commercial.

Eva Avila
– Sang “Old Skool Love” by Divine Brown.
– Amazing.
– Perfect tone.
– She is doing a perfect job.
– Nailing every note.
– She looks great once again, in a sleek red dress.
– This could be the best performance on Idol this season.
– Truly awesome.
– Second standing ovation.
– She will also benefit from the fact that she is up against three guys.

Zack: Canadian Idol… Eva Avila?
Jake: Without a doubt, the best performance of the night.
Sass: Phrasing was fantastic.
Farley: If this performance doesn’t bring you back (from the bottom three last week), a double-platinum album will.

Recap.

Show over.

My prediction is that Tyler or Chad will be going home. I think Eva will break the run of females leaving. I think it will be Tyler, even though he has never made the bottom three before.
