Murtzcellanious: LIVE Canadian Idol Recap – August 29

Archive

Can you believe that we are down to the final three? Can you believe that I have only missed one LIVE Idol show in the last two years? Neither can I.

After the standard intro (Brophy’s deal), Ben did his cheesy “Let’s get ready to IDOL!” line again.

The show began and Mulroney revealed that a Canadian Idol record was achieved on Monday night as 4.3 million votes were cast. That is a pretty big number. It also is funny how Rockstar: Supernova, NEVER reveals the voting numbers. According to Brooke Burk, they just seem to double every week. Haha. I can’t believe I haven’t mentioned that before.

Anyway, after a recap of Monday’s performances, there was a group performance. It was nice to just hear the Idols for once in a group performance as I sometimes feel they have been overshadowed with all of the guest instructors performing every Tuesday.

Tyler started the group performance, followed by Chad, and then Craig and Eva. Once again, my reality senses were again picking up something here, saving the big two for the end? Coincidence? We shall see.

I don’t like ballads for the group performances. To steal a line from Jonny Fairplay, ballads for Canadian Idol group performances are like fat women and wicker chairs. They were not meant to go together.

Tonight, the audience was treated to a performance from last year’s runner-up, Rex Goudie. With guitar in tow, he performed his big “Run” song and I liked the performance. I always thought that Rex sounded better live than he did on TV and I enjoyed the show that he put on. He also has matured incredibly as a performer with all of the experience he has had on his tour with Melissa O’Neil.

At the end of the performance, Ben welcomed Goudie home and presented him with his first platinum album. He also threw in a plug for the Newfoundlander’s second album which drops December 5. Before leaving, Goudie offered some advice to the final four and said to “have as much fun as you can” because the opportunity would never happen again.

After a cheesy video with Elena Juatco (who I am not a big fan of on-camera), it was time for the results. My prediction was a Chad and Tyler bottom two. Chad was the popular pick, but I thought he saved himself on Monday and I was going with Tyler.

EVA: SAFE
CHAD: BOTTOM 2
TYLER: BOTTOM 2
CRAIG: SAFE

An expected result.

Ben asked the judges for their comments.

Zack: Becoming a great artist is like being a great husband or father. It takes time (directed at Craig).

Jake: Your voice has to sing your words (directed at Chad, I think).

Sass: Tyler, really concentrate on yourself. Don’t take advice from anybody (Murtz’s thought: Does that mean that he shouldn’t take Sass’ advice?).

Farley: Think really big (directed at Eva).

Ben announced that Chad was going home.

Doucette said that the whole experience had been amazing for him and like almost all the contestants before him, thanked the crowd.

It’s standards night next week and a one-hour results show on Tuesday featuring Tony Bennett.

Should Murtz break out the purple Arsenio suit or save that for the party?

Stay tuned.
