Rock Star: Supernova – Recap – Episode 2-19

Archive

A quick note about the Canadian Idol recaps – my VCR failed me on Monday and Ed’s dad over the weekend, so please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

Rock Star time, and Brooke Burke introduces the Final Five, Supernova, and Dave Navarro. Ryan is apparently doing well as his songs are being downloaded quite frequently. On MSN. No other online music service has heard of him. So Ryan’s mum needs to stop downloading his shitty song.

Reality Segment – It’s still All About Dilana as she reflects on her poor bottom three performance. Enough of that though, as the singers get to work with Gilby on their original songs. Toby has energy, Lukas is unprepared, and Dilana felt outside of her comfort zone. She’s written a song that’s an FU to the internet, and Gilby’s worried about her imagination.

Song Selection! The singers find out that they’ll be performing a two-song set – one cover and one original song. Storm is a bit leery since Zayra, Patrice and Ryan all sang originals… and all got sent home.

Dilana changes up “Behind Blue Eyes” even though she doesn’t really know the song and House Band leader Paul is worried about that.

Back in the theatre, we discover that Dilana has caused yet another person to get hurt – herself as she tore a calf muscle during rehearsal. So she’s carried out onstage, and sits on a stool to sing “Behind Blue Eyes” by the Who. I understand Paul’s concern, but with Dilana, the reworking was in good hands. Good job, and it’s kinda scary to see her try to rock out on one good leg.

After some banter, Dilana launches into her original song – she doesn’t let us know what it is, but the text lets us know it’s called “Supersoul”, and it’s that songe she was talking about in the Reality Segment. She does an interesting thing with it in that she turns it from a straight FU into kind of a backhanded compliment to the fans. That may not endear her all that much to them. Oh, and now she’s hobbling around on her one good leg trying to rock out.

Dave thinks it’s amazing to pull this out after tearing a calf muscle. The original however, wasn’t his favourite. Tommy disagrees – he thought it was banging. Gilby repeats his earlier concern that Dilana is too literal with her lyrics. Jason is impressed with her strong will and effort – which is super important to him.

Now we get to Magni, who drew “Back in the USSR” by the Beatles. It’s your typical Magni performance – that is, really good. His original song is called “When the Time Comes”, and it’s got the kind of hooks that you’d think Supernova would dig. Of course, by tonight, Magni could be turfed, as I don’t see him really wanting to leave his family for a year or move them to the US for this. Which is a shame, since he is the best male singer left and the second or third best performer overall on the show.

Dave calls him “Molten Hot Magni”, and says that that was the most aggressive he’s heard his voice. Tommy thinks that the performances were exactly the same. Magni replies that that was because “both of the songs were sung by me” which gets a good laugh from the “band”. Gilby simply wanted Magni to bring it up a wee bit more.

It’s time to hear Storm Large sing, but Dave wants to rock with her on David Bowie’s “Suffragette City”. You think Storm is turning that down? And… wham, bam, thank you ma’am, indeed. Storm puts on another great performance, and goes to her second song, “(What the What is) Ladylike”, which in my mind cements her as not becoming the winner of the show. Why? Because that was an awesome set, and given Storm’s presence, she’d overshadow her three bandmates – hell, she could be the new Gwen and Tommy, Gilby and Jason the new Adrian, Tom and Tony. You think an ego like Tommy Lee will let that happen?

Dave tells “Stormy” that he’s been onstage with many great singers, and that he felt that same vibe with her. Tommy thinks that that track (“Ladylike”) is the mmmmmm! Gilby jokingly repeats Tommy’s comment, and notes that it was a great Bowie song, and a great Storm Large song.

So here’s one of YOUR final two, Lukas Rossi, who mumbles “Livin’ on a Prayer” by Bon Jovi. I love his rearrangement of the song into a pop ballad, but unfortunately he’s all marble-mouthed and I can’t understand a damn word he’s saying. His original (after some good banter) is called “Head Spinnin'”, which is more of a generic nuRock ballad. It pretty much is what it is, and Lukas is likely safe because the “band” sees that they can mold this kid to their liking.

Dave says that Lukas showed us an emotional heavy-handed side that he dug, and Gilby got inspired when I sees him perform.

Closing the show is Toby Rand, your other final two member, singing a rather unmemorable version of “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers, but he does get the audience into it, which is kinda cool. Then he really gets the crowd into things with his 80’s Billy Idol-style song “Throw it Away”, which is really, really catchy. But what’s up with Tommy goosing him? Toby finishes by going back to the singer area where Storm spanks him. I’m sure a lot of guys wish they were Toby right now.

Dave notes that “Evs” is no longer an Aussie saying, and that his original song was instantaneously memorable. Tommy thinks that the song was bad bleepin’ ass, and Gilby says that he puts the fun in rock ‘n’ roll.

We’re looking at the early results now… and the results from highest to lowest are Toby, Lukas, Magni, Storm and Dilana. Look for the final results to stay roughly the same, but for Dilana to get the boot.
