Hey Daron good to see you again bud.

Indeed, how are you today?

Good here. I’m looking forward to the new version 3. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the Handbook then. Not sure I’m allowed to spoil that but you can edit it.

Um”¦do we have something to spoil?

Cool well I think it’s time we started this one off

Let’s do it.

Sarah Asked

hey jim

okay when i bought ultimate avengers 1 it says theres gonna be an ironman cartoon next year. and theres gonna be a real well action movie also. who is dr strange?? i know hes gonna be in ultimate allicance but ive never heard of him?

Sure

Real name: Dr. Stephen Vincent Strange
Nicknames Sorcerer Supreme, Master of the Mystic Arts, Captain Universe, formerly the Master of Black Magic
Former Alias Dr. Stephen Sanders, Vincent Stevens
Occupation: Sorcerer Supreme of the Earth dimension, occult consultant; formerly physician, neurosurgeon
Place of birth: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Known relatives: Eugene (father, deceased), Beverly (mother, deceased), Victor (Khiron, brother, apparently deceased), Donna (sister, deceased), Clea (wife, estranged), Umar (mother-in-law), Orini (father-in-law), Dormammu (uncle-in-law)
Marital Status Married to Clea under the conditions of the Dark Dimension
Group affiliation: Defenders, Midnight Sons, secretly a member of the Illuminati, Formerly The Order, former disciple of the Ancient One
Base of operation: Greenwich Village, New York City
First appearance: STRANGE TALES Vol. 1 #110 (1963)

Known powers: Dr. Strange is the Sorcerer Supreme of the Universe; he has unparalleled mastery of the mystic arts, which he uses to defend his reality from otherworldly threats; his primary magical patrons are a group of entities known as “the Vishanti.” The Vishanti are a trinity of godly beings comprised of Agamotto, Hoggoth, and Oshtur. Although he has, on rare occasions, called upon the power of the demon Dormammu, he no longer does so.

Doctor Strange is one of the most powerful sorcerers in existence. Like most sorcerers, he draws his power from three primary sources:

Personal Powers: As a result of his mystic training, Stephen is capable of a great many abilities such as:

Astral Projection
Telepathy
Hypnotism
Other Psychic Abilities

These are put in a separate category because he seems to perform these functions as a telepath would, not needing to manipulate magic to do it. These abilities can be amplified by mystic energy (as against Moondragon) and/or the Eye of Agamotto (done countless times) to afford Stephen incredibly powerful psychic abilities.
Universal Sources: By manipulating the ambient mystical energy of the universe, Dr. Strange can perform a great many functions. Commonly this is seen as:

Mystic Bolts
Transmutation
Telekinesis
Standard Shields
Common Spells & etc.

He can also use this mystical energy to cast spells of a near infinite variety. These spells seem to be quicker to perform but lesser in power than spells using divine energy.

Divine Sources: Dr. Strange can channel energy from countless mystical beings in countless dimensions to empower his spells. This can take the form of standard spells (“Crimson Bands of Cyttorak”) or just stating what he wants to occur and channeling some being to make it happen. It is unknown at this time what debt, if any, he incurs by invoking the powers that be. There is no quid pro quo, though some entities will feel he is obliged to heed their call when they need help in their conflicts as did the Vishanti.

Darkness of the Divine Conduit (Black Magic): By sheer force of will “take” the power of another entity. This does not require the use of a spell. He used this ability against Arioch and Shuma-Gorath during the Strange Tales Volume 2 run. The fact that Stephen can do this is a testament to his incredible will-power and strength of mind. This is considered black magic and as such he rarely employs this. Also when taking the powers of celestial entities he absorbs the mind and assumes their duties and roles in the dimension in which they exist. If his will falters, he can lose all sense of self.

Although Dr. Strange primarily uses spells that are considered ‘white magic’, he will use spells from other disciplines such as black magic, elemental magic, and catastrophe magic when necessary.

Known abilities Doctor Strange is a skilled athlete and martial artist with substantial medical and magical knowledge. Though an expert surgeon, Strange’s nerve-damaged hands prevent him from performing surgery except when supplemented by magic. Dr. Strange was trained in the martial arts used by Tibetan monks in Kamar Taj. He trains regularly with Wong and has been known to occasionally spar with other heroes. Dr. Strange’s lifespan has been extended in a manner similar to that of his mentor the Ancient One.

Weapons When necessary, Dr. Strange will use magical weapons that he has collected.

Equipment Normally wears the Cloak of Levitation and the Eye of Agamotto. He possesses a wide array of arcane texts, artifacts, and relics.

Hope that helps

I hate to sound like an ass, but how is it anyone can be a Marvel comics fan, know about our site, but never heard of Dr. Strange? I’m honestly flabbergasted”¦

1) What is the scarlet witch doing these days.

She is in Wundagore waiting till New Avengers 26 to make her grand reappearance

2)Can you explain about Scarlet witc’s twins thing was all about.

Wanda received an infusion of magic power that allowed her to transform Vision into a virile, potent human being. The two had sex and Wanda became pregnant with twins, Thomas and William. The two retired from their careers as super-heroes to raise their children, but came out of retirement to join the Avengers West Coast team after several members quit the group.

She revealed that the demonic energies used by Wanda to make Vision sexually potent were fragmented portions of life force of the demonic Mephisto. Mephisto, through his minion Master Pandemonium, kidnapped Wanda’s children and reassorbed them into his being.

When she created the House of M reality she had recalled she had the children which she was forced to forget. She brought them back into existence. After House of M ended she sent her sons into normal reality older now and named Thomas Shepherd (Speed) and Billy Kaplan (Wiccan)

3)Where is Viper of Hydra because hydra tried to get Spider-woman to take her place.

Viper has since taken a more subtle hand at fighting her enemies and appears to be working with Hydra once more. She tried to place Spider-Woman as a double-agent within S.H.I.E.L.D., using Hydra resources to restore the powers that she lost some time ago. Spider-Woman agreed to the exchange, but grew uncomfortable with the arrangement. When Drew was later offered membership in the Avengers, Viper urged her to accept the offer and continue being a double-agent for them as well. The situation came to a head when the Avengers captured Viper when she was attempting to restore the Silver Samurai in a position of power to take over the Japanese underworld. Viper forced Spider-Woman to help her escape from a plane high above the Pacific. The escape endangered Captain America, who was tossed from the plane, and Spider-Woman helped save him, although Viper seemed to have vanished. So she’s MIA for now.

4) I was thinking the other day on how they could get the marvel universe back to normal or could be marvels plan in the end here. What if this thing is just a dream of Wanda’s. It makes sense to me> Here’s how… Wanda was knocked out after the events of Avengers disassembled. This hole thing could just be a nightmare from her. What do you guys think.

I don’t think so. I think Civil War is Marvels way to bring back the old conflicts and more from the past back into the comics. They can now do some more stories that we haven’t seen before.

Yeah, I don’t see Marvel saying everything that’s happened for the last year was a dream, not with these stories spanning so many different titles. If they ever intend to really “fix” anything they’ll either have to do a DC type crisis or Marvel type “that never happened” retcon.

Long-time reader, first time writer. Love what you guys do here.

Thanks man. Good to have you on board.

Agreed, glad to have you on board with us.

Couple of things to add on some of the items over the past couple of Handbooks:

1. Disabled Superheroes – Silhouette (from New Warriors) – paralyzed

Ohhhhh nice. I loved Silhoutte from New Warriors

2. Emma Frost Love Interests – Tony Stark – In Civil War #3, Tony makes mention of an “arrangement we used to have when neither of us was dating.” – I’m reading “friends with benefits” out of that.

Ok that’s a good one. I can see it now. The two biggest players in Marvel getting it on. Makes a lot of sense

3. Avengers that use weapons:
a. Moon Knight (Avengers West Coast) – his usual assortment of weapons
b. Henry Pym (Avengers West Coast) – he used to shrink weapons and carry them in his pockets, then enlarge them when needed (On the gun question, in issue #33, he enlarged two guns; however, they only fired rubber bullets).
c. Thor – Mjolnir

I didn’t want to count Thor but I guess I should’ve. Moon Knight does count fully. He’s like Marvels Batman.

Keep up the great work, and I hope I have a chance to write again.

Cool I hope you do man. You helped a ton.

You’re always welcome to write again.

Robby emails

The character the Fallen One who is appearing in Ahnilation. Where did he first appear? And when did he meet Thanos? (issue #s would be cool)

First App: Thanos #11 August 2004

Met Thanos in that same issue and in the following issue.

Speaking of Thanos when did he meet the Beyonder and that little sprite thing?

Thanos had encountered the Beyonder in the past, but this was never explained, as Thanos was dead at the time of Secret Wars II. Thanos’ flashback showed Thanos as a youngster. This may have been a plot writer Keith Giffen would have elaborated on in the future.

Cory emails

Hello again True Believer’s. Cory’s here…….here with more questions…..questions that only J & D can answer. How you fellas week been?

Hey Cory been an interesting week but a little boring. But I’m good

Work? Work sucks, but then what’s new?

1. Recently in Daredevil #86 (August, 2006), the villain known as Black Tarantula was seen in jail. But, when a riot broke out, Bullseye ,also a prisoner, threw cards right in the middle of Tarantula’s head, either injuring him badly (as blood spat out of his head) or killing him. So I liked him, what’s his status?

I think he could be dead but there is a possibility that he is alive and well and ready to come back when a writer needs him. Recall that in Mc-2 he is alive harassing Spider-Girl

Um, Jim, what the hell does the Mc-2 Universe have to do with 616?

2. Juggernaut & She-Hulk, they dated right? Any details of what got these 2 together & what led to their breakup? (Talk about an domestic dispute, lol).

They slept together. Not to sure about dating to much lol.
I think it was a one night stand in the first series of her series. I can’t recall the issue though. If someone can recall it they will email

Ah, the dreaded “lol.” You’d a thought Tim made fun of you enough when he filled in for me that we’d never see them again”¦

And as to your Q, Cory, they first got together in the pages of Uncanny X-Men, under the direction of fan favorite writer Chuck Austen.

3. In Wolv. #45 (Good issue, btw), Wolverine says “Me & Namor. We threw down once, coupla years back. Don’t remember any of it though. Wasn’t in my right mind at the time. Pretty sure I kicked his a$$ though.” When was this & what actually led to this?

This one I do recall the issue.

investigating the apparent invasion of Earth by the K’un L’un sentient plant race called the H’lythri, Namor was forced to fight Wolverine, who had been captured by the H’lythri and their associate Plant Man days before. The battle was fierce, but it was interrupted by the sorcerer Master Khan, who destroyed the plant people and returned Wolverine to his place.

4. Also in the same issue, Wolvie tells Nitro ” No. It aint my place to kill you. It’s theirs. My guess, you’ll be wishing that I did kill you. Probably be the only thing we ever have in common”. What did he mean by that?

He means he thinks the Atlantians deserve revenge more then he does. He thinks if anyone killed them it should be them in the end. He also promised he wouldn’t do it

5. Characters with handicaps: Nitro & Silver Samurai. Both were left amputees by Wolverine recently. “Chronic pain”? I know that Guido had a heart attack back before the AOA, but why “chronic”?

Strong Guy has the mutant ability to absorb kinetic energy and use it to enhance his physical strength up to an unmeasured limit. However, he cannot store the energy he absorbs for very long; as a rule he must expend it within 90 seconds to prevent the enormous amounts of energy from permanently distorting his body. He is in constant pain from the existing distortion, although he hides it well, traditionally playing the role of team comedian to distract himself

6. About my Civil War theory last week, Jamie you mentioned that “Hercules would be a logical option”. Also stating that maybe Falcon would work in order to piss off Cap. How pissed do you think Cap would get? I hope he gets medieval on Tony’s a$$.

Well both would work.

I mean Hercules is still in the running since we know Thor is the killer and he’s the only one that could kill Herc. Of course if we go along the lines Cable or Cap have known the character the longest. Falcon works with Cap. Cable though has me pondering a lot.

7. Daron you said “Anyone wanna place bets on Cap himself dying?” NO!! That’s a DEBATEABLE topic there. First, who will be the killer? Secondly, that’s a nice thing for Cap, kinda. New identity, since he is fighting as a American, against America. Sorta like they did when he was The Captain. thirdly, since U.S. Agent is on the opposite side, They may have him to replace Steve Rogers as Cap. Captain America may “die”, but not ole Steven Rogers.

I don’t think Steve Rogers is the one dying either. I think in reality we may have better clues where he’s going to be post Civil War to. Check the image above.

Also to add to this little debate. Why kill Captain America? He’s now gaining back a lot of the popularity he’s lost over the years of having bad runs on his title and of course all around bad usage.

Well I can definitely see the other side putting US Agent in a Cap outfit and sending him out. But no, I don’t see Steve dying”¦

8. Since the all-female Avengers were put together last week, how about a all-female X-Men team & why?

Mine
Storm: Leader (best X-leader ever other then Cyc)
Shadowcat (spy and fighter.)
Rogue (Strength and flight)
Psylocke (fighting and stelth)
Marvel Girl (telepathy)
Polaris (magnetism)
Sage (information specialist)

Reserve:
Dazzler
Jubilee
M
Husk

I honestly don’t think I like enough of the X-chickas to make a whole team out of them”¦

9.Whoa! When did Magneto & Emma Frost become an item?

I put an addition onto him I thought saying it’s possible that happened when he joined the Hellfire Club back in the 80s.

10. So how bad do you guys think Wolverine woulda defeated Lobo if he had the metal in him? I mean he is the epitome of the non-conventional superhero. The rebel, renegade, loner. The original guy with the claws. One of the original trendsetters for the anti-hero archetype. Thanks to him every group has one now. Baraka, Lobo, Ripclaw, Warblade, & Raphael (TMNT). Catch my drift. Nice top 7 stupid list last week also. Speaking of Lobo, since he lost to Wolvie, do you think that Sabretooth could beat him as well?

lol well with Claws Wolverine would’ve beat him in less time. One good snikt and then dead. The bone claws where good but adamantium= better.

Also I think Sabretooth would’ve kicked his ass to.

I think just about anyone other than Gambit or Maggot could take Lo-tard-bo.

11. Though I seen him now, who is Shroud & what is his powers?

Real Name: Maxillian Quincy Coleridge
Aliases: Michael Wyatt
Identity: Secret
Occupation: Crime fighter masquerading as a gang leader
Citizenship: United States of America
Place of Birth: Unrevealed
Known Relatives: Unrevealed
Group Affiliation: (Formerly) the Night Shift
Education: College degree in criminology
Height: 6’2″
Weight: 220 lbs.
Eyes: Pale blue
Hair: Reddish-Blonde

Powers: Ability to create apertures into the Darkforce Dimension to project Darkforce in a gaseous form which he can manipulate. The Darkforce negates all light sources in the area, and the Shroud can manipulate the source into basic shadows and shapes to serve as decoys. Mystical extrasensory perception replacing his eye sight) that allows him to “see” through walls and through his own darkness.

Abilities: The Shroud is an expert hand-to-hand martial artist and adept at infiltration.
Weapons: Explosive “bombarangs”

12. Underrated Avengers: Why the mention of Ant-Man? Btw, you put “Ant-Man (Scott Pym), that a combo between Hank Pym & Scoyt Lang?

Haha actually I think I was half asleep when I said that one. Meant Scott Lang

13. The Swordsman. I never truly liked him until I saw J. Lee’s or R. Liefeld’s rendition of him in The Heroes Reborn angle of the Avengers. I liked his new look there. Where’s he been?

He actually stayed in the Heroes Reborn universe for a time.
The third Swordsman was a native of the Heroes Reborn world, which was created by Franklin Richards and later became the second Counter-Earth. He and his world were created after the Avengers “died” battling Onslaught. He joined the Avengers for the duration of their stay on that world, and was revealed to actually be that world’s counterpart of Deadpool during his time with the cast-off heroes called the “Remnants”.

14. What’s this I hear about rumors on Spider-Man possibly switching sides in Civil War? Do you guys really think that this is the only way for him to get his secret identity back?

I have a feeling he either switches sides or he just comes between both sides after the villains show up. Try to unite the sides to stop the villains

15. Any guess on what heroes will join or should join both Iron Man’s & Cap’s Avengers roster post Civil War? Since the Thing is gone from the F4, who’s gonna replace him? She-Hulk?

Actually we know 1 team: Mighty Avengers: Iron Man, Ares, Black Widow, Sentry, Ms Marvel, Wonder Man, Wasp.

Omega Flight looks like Cap, Beta ray Bill, Guardian, Talisman, and Spider-Woman in some form.

New Avengers will have some form of a team. FF likely will need to replace 2 members. I think it’s possible Sue will lead the group with Johnny and Namor on the group. The fourth I still am debating

16. What top 5 heroes have surprised or become your fan-faves recently in 06? 1-Luke Cage; he has stepped his game up Big-time, solo title I hope. 2- Spider-Woman; great character, double agent with a good origin. 3- Patriot- a possible black successor to Cap. 4- Speedball- gets my sympathy plea. 5- Sentry- different and a lil DCish.

1. Luke Cage. Agree with your points exactly
2. Spider-Woman: Jessica is really beings used right
3. Sentry: Can I say he’s a great nut job lol
4. Beta Ray Bill: You can thank the limited series
5. Iron Fist: How about his run as Daredevil

17. Why not grant Luke Cage a solo title? Cool name, urban, street smart, strong, tough…like a Black Panther in the hood. Just no “Sweet Christmas” lines, 70’s lingo, or sideburns. He even has a interracial love interest. So many ways to go with him. Throw in an Iron Fist cameo, and there ya go. Does he have any known enemies though?

Well could use some of the old Heroes for Hire foes:

Angar the Screamer
Black Mariah
Bushmaster
Chemistro
The H’yulthri
Master Khan
Montenegro
Nightshade
The Ninja
The Steel Serpent

I bet there are others too. Plus you can make up new villains and bring in others. I’d do it.

Don’t forget Sabertooth. If I’m not mistaken he was originally a Power Man and Iron Fist villain.

18. TOP TEN books, each month: Cable & Deadpool, Wolverine, New Avengers, Punisher, Punisher: War Journal, Black Panther, Thunderbolts, and anything Civil War related.

There’s another edition of the Marvel Handbook for everyone. What did you think, Daron

Good stuff as always, though still no debate topic”¦

We have a little of a debate but more would be cool. So challenge stands. Let’s have 1 good debate that involves more emails.

Bah, my crap Cap argument isn’t even close to a real debate. But whatever, I’m out. Have a good one, everyone.

Alrighty I’ll finish us off this week.

1. Marvel.com poll What has been the most shocking event in Civil War?

2. Digital comics Comics you can read online

3. Marvel is in the process of adding new bios and added a ton of new ones. Check them out here

4. As always your opinions on anything in the article or out on the shelves is welcome. After all you never know what type of response you will get.

5. Keep those emails coming and make sure to label them Marvel Handbook. The more emails the better the article is.
