Murtzcellanious: LIVE Canadian Idol Recap – September 5

Archive

Welcome to another Canadian Idol results show. This will be the last results show before we know who the winner is.

After the standard intro, Ben Mulroney did some more of the hype that he has recently perfecting by telling the crowd that this was their show and they should “own it and celebrate it” and that it was going to be one of the best shows that they had ever seen.

There was a huge ovation for Tony Bennett who opened the show with a performance. I have to tell you that I use the term performance here very loosely. It was very very short and I have had sneezes that have lasted longer. He also spent more time introducing the band then he did actually singing.

After the song, Bennett talked to Mulroney for awhile about his new album where he has collaborated with everyone from Elton John to Paul McCartney. He said that he was a little apprehensive about it at first but that he introduced all the songs that are on the album. Ben then said his father (former Prime Minister of Canada and a Murtz Jaffer favorite) Brian Mulroney was in attendance was a big Bennett fan. The singer thanked him for “doing such a magnificent job with this country.”

It was time for a top 3 performance. I especially liked when Tyler told Craig to “take it.” It made me laugh for some reason. Tyler is undoubtedly the showman of the group. The choreography is good in the performance and I like it because it allows for each member of the top three to do a solo. Two guys and a girl (and a pizza place?) works as well because of how Eva has to put on a show with both because it was standards week. The crowd didn’t really react at the end of it, but the performance was solid.

Tony Bennett then came out again.

Ben announced that 4.3 million votes were cast last week and introduced a recap of Monday’s performances. He then asked the judges for their comments.

Zack: So honored to spend my summers with Canada this way.

Jake: For sure, I saw all of three of them in Top 10 and at least two of them could go all the way.

Sass: Media Idol?

Farley: Media had to stand in their shoes.

Media Idol was a reference to an Idol marketing ploy where journalists “competed” for a prize. I didn’t participate, but it is a subject that I do not wish to discuss or give credence to.

It was then time for Ben to talk to the Idols about their trip to New York to learn from Tony Bennett.

Eva: I couldn’t be happier right now.

Tyler: It’s helped us a lot.

Craig: Going to New York and meeting Tony really lifted our spirits.

A video package was played of the Idols in New York City.

All the Idols then did encores.

Tyler started it off with “It Had To Be You.”

Can you believe half the show is still left?

A Telus montage was then played. This was followed by interviews with the top three in the mansion.

Eva then did her encore of “God Bless The Child.”

Time for some more product placement. This time from Kraft Dinner. A vignette was played with the Idols eating some.

Craig Sharpe then performed “The Way You Look Tonight.”

It was finally time for the results.

While I thought that it might be Craig, despite him being the winner that I predicted from the first show, Tyler was the favorite.

As expected, Ben announced that Tyler would be going home.

The show wrapped with comments from the judges.

Zack: Coming third can be the rocket to success.

Jake: Make a country rock record

Sass: You rock!

Farley: You show people how wonderful and diverse you are as an artist
