Rock Star: Supernova – Recap – Episode 2-19

Archive

It’s Supernova time. Brooke Burke introduces Magni, Dilana, Toby and Lukas. And of course, there’s Supernova and Dave Navarro.

Now, before we actually get to the good singers (and Lukas), there’s one piece of business left. Now, for the viewer encore, it’s “pop idol” Ryan Starr (misspelling intentional). I’m guessing he won because Storm didn’t get enough votes in the 5 or so days she was out. He’s singing “Back of Your Car”, because that’s where he’ll be when his 15 minutes are up and needs a place to live. Or not, since they just gave him a car. The good news – it’s got satellite radio. The bad news – I don’t think his music career will go far enough for him to afford the monthly fee.

Now, Let Us Take You Back to the journey the Final Four took to get here.

The first singer tonight is the all-but-annointed Toby Rand singing Radiohead’s “Karma Police”. He manages a good performance, keeping the song sufficiently dark. He does lose me a bit because the song does have a lot of repetition, but that’s not really his fault, and it’s still a great song regardless.

Now for his second song Toby calls Magni up to play guitar as he does “Throw it Away” again. Just like the other two times, Toby’s showing a lot of energy, and even takes some time to write “EVS” on Magni’s head during Rafael’s guitar solo. Another cool part as Magni holds his guitar for Toby to play a few chords. You can tell they’re just having some fun now.

Dave thought the Radiohead song was great, and that it was a killer set. He feels kicking back and watching a great rock show. Gilby thought Toby got a little lost at beginning but thought it was great when he hit the chorus. Jason felt the energy.

Next up is Lukas Rossi singing “Fix You” by Coldplay. He starts off with his “good” voice, then he kinda does his spaz out thing, which I’m not sure how that’s meant to feel uplifting. Still, I can’t really fault him for anything here, except I really don’t like Lukas.

And now Lukas sings an acoustic version of “Head Spin”, because this song is this year’s “Trees” to Toby’s “Throw it Away”, I think. And like Marty, Lukas seems really oblivious to the fact that this competition is not just about him, but about the “band” as well, so while the performance is good – maybe even great – it’s not gonna get him the victory because the last thing those three egos need is yet another ego on board.

Hey, Paula Abdul is in the audience!

Dave notes that when Paula wants to hear great singing, she comes to Rock Star. Getting back to Lukas, he thinks that he can now listen to Lukas perform for two hours. Tommy thought that the performances were cool as hell. Gilby was amazed at his fearlessness.

Our third performer is Dilana, and at this point I can’t help but think that the order is a bit of foreshadowing for how the “band” expects the pecking order to be. She’s starting off by singing an acoustic version of “Roxanne” by The Police, which I think Ryan ruined previously. It could’ve been someone else, but it was a bad cover nonetheless. Dilana’s, by contrast, is really good. I don’t think anyone has questioned her singing ability. Nice touch getting Toby, Magni and Lukas singing with her at the end.

Dilana is singing “Supersoul” again, so I guess the producers had all the singers repeat their originals. Dilana stresses that the song is a “freedom” song, not an angry song. She goes all over the theatre singing, which I guess means that her calf is either all better or wrapped up real good.

Dave is glad to see Dilana back. Tommy loves her. Jason asks for matching outfits for the “Pips”, and Lukas working on the choreography. Gilby just enjoys watching her every week.

Magni is last up, because they want to give him the glory spot before they give him the boot – assuming that the fans will let them. Or maybe it’s because it took him a while to wash the “EVS” off his head. He’s singing “Hush” by Deep Purple. We’re getting lot’s of fun and energy from the Iceman with this song. And check out Hoffa doing yet another awesome job with the guitar solos. Again, if there’s one talent that really gets overlooked on this show, it’s Rafael.

And like everyone else, Magni gets to repeat his original, “When the Time Comes”. Is it a bad sign when you forget the name of your own song? Still, this was probably the third best original we’ve heard this season. Like Toby’s song, it’s got those great hooks that would work well for the band.

Dave thought it was a killer job, and that it was a lot of fun. Now, let the burial begin. Tommy didn’t remember anything about his original track (compared to the other three). Jason digs the original but doesn’t think it’s as memorable as some of the other songs, but it’s cool to sing your song for the world. Gilby thinks he did a great job.

Now it’s time for the early results… and the results from highest to lowest are Dilana, Toby, Lukas and Magni. Well, we know Toby and Lukas are safe. The question is, will Magni stay out of the bottom three and save himself from elimination for 30 more minutes?
