More Reasons Why Being Deaf Sucks/Rocks

Columns

It’s So Hard To Say Good-bye…

Y’know I didn’t write a column last week on purpose. I knew that this was going to be my last “weekly” column (more on that later) so I specifically didn’t write anything last week so that the “weekly” label wouldn’t apply. Yet by some miracle, or rogue agent, something with my name on it actually popped up under IP Music. Not only was that piece devoid of any links, but it was also sans my “List of Five” that concludes every column. Well, apparently not every column. How odd.

Anyway this is indeed the last edition of More Reasons Why Being Deaf Sucks/Rock in this incarnation to be found under the zone of IP Music. But it’s not like I’m straying too far. My future contributions will be found alongside those of Open Mike Eagle, Aaron Cameron and Jeff Fernandez. In fact here’s a peek at what’s in store of the would of music.

It should a fun ride, I hope that y’all are along for it.

The Column Proper

Since I’m starting a new chapter, I’ve decided that this is be the last of my “revisiting old themes” columns. But it’s going to be a pretty good one. Y’see three years ago I focused on TV Themes that I dig. So here again I’ll give you some inkling of some of the TV themes that I actually enjoy.

Lucky Louie – This song really snuck up on me. I can’t really place when it hit me, but I grew to love it. It’s probably my favorite theme song in recent memory, which is saying something.

I think that it really captures the working class essence of the show. It’s mournful yet heartfelt. Yeah, I really dig that song. I wish it was longer.

Weeds – I appreciated the quirkiness of the theme for the first season. But given that the second season finds the theme performed by different artists every week it has an uneven quality about it.

For instance I dug the Death Cab For Cutie version and the Elvis Costello version. Even the Engelbert Humberdinck version was cool. But the others have left me flat. Still I dig the theme song, for the most part.

The Wire – Yet another show that switches up who performs the theme, only this one does a different version every season, not every episode. I’ve enjoyed every version of the theme. The current (fourth) version too a minute to get used to, as it’s kind of a departure from what’s gone before. It’s kind of offbeat, more so than usual, and the voices of the children can be a distraction. But by the time it’s over it really redeems anything lost and really shines.

Hustle – For a show that’s about appearances (it’s actually about conmen, but that’s pretty much appearances) this theme is glitzy and shiny. It really matches the show in every regard; it’s slick, quick and mesmerizing.

Monk – Who doesn’t love Randy Newman? I mean the guy has a knack for lyrics. There’s a reason why his name often comes up around Oscarâ„¢ time; he’s got a gift. On this theme, he really captures the character of Monk. It’s not only a solid theme, but it’s funny too. And funny is always good.

Yup, that’s it. It’s the end of an era. I’ll catch y’all in the future.
