Ultimate Marvel Handbook # 181

Features

Hey Daron good to see you again bud.

Indeed. Sorry about the lack of a column last week, everyone. I was working on overnights last week, and just didn’t have any time to work on the column. After a couple days past, I decided it would be best to wait till this Friday to post it instead of it going up days late. So again, sorry about the lateness, we’ll get the show on the road.

Well I think we have a load of questions ahead. It was a very good email week. I had to cut down the Civil War update even to make sure every question made it. It’s all good too. I gave a nice link for our readers to check out to read up.

I do my best to keep our fans informed. Either way care to start?

Jim,

My question is this:

I just read Agents of Atlas #1. How many characters from between the golden age comics and the first issue of Fantastic Four are there supposed to be in the MU? Who are they? How many are still active?

As many might tell you the golden age of comics is full of characters. There’s quite a good amount of classics but only a few still stand.
Marvel of course started as Timely. They became Atlas afterwards until finally becoming Marvel comics later. But those characters are all now Marvel characters of the Golden Age.

Note: I’m only counting Atlas and Timely characters on the list. They are real golden age characters. Note though that there are characters like Wolverine and more that have pasts that take them to the golden age. Also other characters that Marvel themselves made later that they made golden age characters with histories that go back to then

Wow. Did anyone else think that list was going a LOT shorter?

Connor asked

this is a question about the ultimate universe..which know you don’t like that much. so in the current ult FF annual we meet a bunch of new teen super geniuses. some of the names sounded familiar, but i was wondering if you could tell me if they are new characters or old ones getting the ult treatment.

Damn it now I have to get this issue. I don’t normally buy Ultimate titles but I’ll get it so I can answer this question. Give me till next week.

Who’d a thought”¦a question Jim doesn’t know the answer to.

Jason emailed

Hello, great job on the Marvel Handbook, as always.

Hey Jason thanks

Just a couple of additions to your list of heroes with disabilities:

Hawkeye-deaf or nearly deaf (had hearing aids in both ears)
War-the original War, Horseman of Apocalypse, was paralyzed without the special armor Apocalypse made for him.
Artie Maddicks-mute
Strong Guy-chronic pain

How I forgot Hawkeye is beyond me. I recalled him when I started and then forgot to list him. Well he’s listed now

As for Thor versus Ares, Ares HAS fought Sub-Mariner before, and Namor held his own outside the water, then threw Ares into water, followed him, and proceeded to trounce him. So if Namor in water can beat Ares, I bet Thor could, too.

Good point. I think you found the perfect solution to the question. So take Thor in a fight between the two.

Just a thought. Thanks!

Welcome Jason. Thanks for the help.

Cory emails

Cory’s back……with more questions. So here’s to it: (I had these done, but friggin yahoo mail “expired out my first email of 24 questions, so hope I remember em all)

Hey Cory good to see you back again.

1. Civil War #4. I heard that it’s possible that someone will die. Rumor has it that someone on Cap’s side will fall. MY THEORY: This person will be Hercules. He’s Cap’s powerhouse, just like Thor. Thor (Norse God). Hercules (Greek demigod). Both past Avengers, with a past rivalry. I believe that Hercules’ death will make room for Ares to enter the war. Ares (God of war—why not a civil war?, Greek myth, and Hercules’ half brother.) All these are motives from him to have his way with Thor. He even made his first appearance as a villian of Thor in Thor volume 1 #129 (1966). Cap needs a major force on his side anyway. Sentry? Silver Surfer? Dr.Strange? Why not Ares?

Good theory. I’ve thought of that one myself. I know someone dies. Hercules would be a logical option. I also think Falcon would work It would really tick off Cap. He’s his partner and has been with Cap from day 1.

Anyone want to place bets on Cap himself dying? No?

2. What possessed Sunspot to become the villainous Reignfire?

Reignfire showed up on the scene shortly after Roberto disappeared from sight and took over the Mutant Liberation Front by force. His appearance and powers were startling similar to Roberto’s and, in the middle of a battle, he removed his mask to reveal that he was (Nicieza’s original intention).

Cable tried his best to heal Roberto of this wicked persona which was dominating his body, eventually succumbing to force. Cable telepathically entered his mind and shut down the persona, a bit of Cable’s knowledge also transferring. After Roberto was liberated from Reignfire he would occasionally speak Askani–Cable’s native language. All seemed well until X-Force found out about someone resembling Sunspot who had attacked and kidnapped Skids. Upon investigation it was discovered that Reignfire was alive and in the flesh–not simply an aspect of Roberto’s mind.

Supposedly Reignfire was a cellular construct that had patterned itself after Roberto when it had received a cell sample from him (later writer John Francis Moore’s retcon). Therefore, this being looked identical to Roberto, had similar powers, but was evil. He also had the ability to forge a telepathic link with his progenitor, explaining away the time when Roberto would switch into his evil persona. This explanation left many fans unhappy given the previous history of both characters. Shortly after this story was fabricated Reignfire met his untimely demise.

3. So who wins: Jubilee or Meltdown?

Well currently I’ll take Meltdown for sure. After all Jubs is de-powered. In a powered fight I take Boom Boom/Meltdown too. She’s more powerful and nuts. She’s willing to go extreme

Well, let’s see, fireworks vs massive energy explosions? Who do you think would win?

4.Speaking of Ares. I know that he would totally kick the Punisher’s a$$, but would he see a lot of himself in ole Frank? Like a worthy successor & wouldn’t Frank somewhat consider the God of War a “role model”? (Just as long as Frank does start to fight demons again…ugh)

Heh. If they met that would be interesting. Frank is a soldier. Always has been. He sees himself as one. He doesn’t believe in Ares though. He might take Ares as some guy playing dress up. But you could be right in ways. Ares could see something in Frank being a Warrior.

5. If you could put together an all female Avengers team, what women would you chose & why?

Wow nice one. I’ll take a 7 person team. I’ll even use all former/current Avengers only. So they had to be an Avenger to join.

Wasp (leadership. Likely the best female leader of the team)
Scarlet Witch (magic. Her powers would be an asset)
She-Hulk ((strength. She’s the powerhouse)
Spider-Woman I (Drew) (spy/tactics. She’s able to do a lot for this group)
Invisible Woman (Sue adds her own leadership and intelligence to the group)
Mantis (fighting. Likely one of the best female fighters in Marvel)
Ms Marvel (SHIELD. She’s got the ability to help bring in the back up)

Reserves:
Pulsar
Tigra
Firebird
Crystal
Firestar

Hell, I can’t even think of any others to add.

6. What people in the MU, have been Mystique’s love interest? The same question goes for the White Queen. I think they both should have a hoe-down, lol.

This ones funny but here’s the list we know of:

Mystique: Destiny, Wolverine, Sabretooth, Azazel, Baron Christian Wagner, Forge, Senator Brickman.

Emma Frost: Troy Killkelly, Ian Kendall, Sebastian Shaw (Not sure but betting on it), Magneto, Banshee, Cyclops

7. Is it me, or does anyone else hate Lobo (D.C.)? Besides being a over-the-top parody of Wolverine, what else is there? Seems to me that ever since D.C. vs. Marvel #3, his career has went downhill…fast!

I hate him too. I’m glad Wolverine kicked his ass.

I can easily agree with this one. One of the stupidest characters of all time. We’ll put him in at #7 under Gambit, Gambit, Gambit, Gambit, Gambit, & Maggot.

8. It seems that Marvel recently announced that the main Civil War book, along with its tie-ins, would be pushed back several weeks to accommodate artist Steve McNiven. The current schedule has issue four being released in September, while issue 5 will not be released until November. Any reply from you two on this?

Can I blame Mark Miller? I mean it. Can I blame him? Most of his books come out late by Marvel. Look at Ultimates. It should be over the second series now and it’s not. I think there’s more to this then we think.

I like his work but the lateness isn’t helping. I don’t like late books. BUT if it continues to be a good series without any mistakes I’ll have less to complain about. The only thing I hate about Civil War is the late books.

Well I know McNiven isn’t the speediest artist, and I don’t think it’s fair to really blame Millar. I believe most of the lateness with the Ultimates is also because of the artist Bryan Hitch. I’d rather they be honest and let us now what’s going on than be clueless.

9. Characters with Handicaps. Wheelchair bound;Spinal disabilities: Mojo. Eyepatch wearers: Wolverine as Patch. Amputees: Garrison Kane & Reaper (from the MLF, who had both hands cut off by Shatterstar), Angel (in the Mutant Massacre)?

ohhhhh nice additions. Again good to see people caught some)

10. (Top 10) characters who I’d like to see in Civil War: 1-Nick Fury, 2-Venom, 3-Hawkeye, 4-Uatu, 5-Spider-Woman, 6-Dr. Strange, 7-Ares, 8-Ghost Rider, 9-Dr. Doom, 10-Silver Surfer?. Others: Namor (since Namorita died), Quicksilver (since he started most of the recent turmoil), Magneto (since he is powerless), & Jean Grey (since the original X-Men are a unit, minus her).

Uatu was in issue 1. He appeared in the big meeting of the heroes in issue 1.

Spider-Woman officially joined the war now in New Avengers. Namor is in Wolverine in Civil War tie ins. Quicksilver showed up in X-Factor tie ins. Doom was in the FF prelude issues. The rest though. They still haven’t appeared.

11- What do you guys think about Spider-Woman (Julia Carpenter) defecting from the Registration side?

That was pretty interesting. We found out why she did it of course. She loves Shroud and don’t want to hurt him. Also she may have went pro act to try to help those she could. I assume though this plot will continue through Ms Marvel.

12- Why the notion that Moon Knight will not be involved in the Civil War? Any reasons?

I never said he wouldn’t be in Civil War. In fact I had learned he would be in a Civil War tie in by then. I know it’s like a post one but close enough. I did say I want to see him though involved

I was the one that said it. And that’s what I heard from various creators. I believe they want to let Moon Knight’s new series stand on it’s own and set it self up without having to drag it through a crossover.

13- I agree, Moon Knight’s book is moving slow, but fast in the wrong direction. It’s like the new Miami Vice movie. Good to look at, but bad to try to follow. I hope it picks up major steam soon because he’s a great character who deserves his due.

I haven’t had to many problems with the current Moon Knight series. Maybe I’m the odd one. I am enjoying the series. I know it’s a little slow but so far good.

Slow is hardly the term. And I can’t express how bored I’ve been with it.

14- OMG, when & how did Luke Cage defeat Dr. Doom?

Luke Cage: Hero for Hire 8-9. Luke Cage famously flew to Latveria on one of the Fantastic Four’s rockets and pounded on Doom to get the $200 Doom owed him for a job. I may be wrong on the issues since it likely was when Luke replaced Thing on the FF.

15- Who are your top 5 most underrated Avengers, ever? Mine are Stingray, Sersi, Black Knight, Firestar, & D-Man.

Not a bad list there.
1. Firestar
2. Sersi
3. Black Knight
4. Ant-Man (Scott Pym)
5. Swordsman

16- What is Forge’s real name? Has it ever been revealed?

We have yet to learn Forge’s real name. Something not many have noticed over the years.

17- I know & remember Destiny dying, but why exactly did Mystique blame Forge for her death?

Well let’s recall that Forge had a little something to do with Rogue’s “Death” in Fall of the Mutants. So Mystique was already mad over that. Mystique had sent Forge off with Destiny to protect her, Destiny sent him away after telling him to love Mystique with all his heart. Destiny was then killed by Legion

18- So am I safe to assume that if Storm didn’t marry Black Panther that in all likelihood she would have married Forge? Though I remember her & Bishop having a fling. But aint she his great ancestor? Yuck. That’s gotta be bad for the “Grandfather Paradox” thing.

Very much possible. Forge still loves Storm and likely would’ve married her in time.

19- Though I enjoyed the first movie more, did any of you guys like the 2nd Ultimate Avengers dvd. Except for Giant Man dying, and no Hawkeye—>This seems to be a recurring issue, lol. No Hawkeye.

I’ll bet Hawkeye will make it into Ultimate Avengers 3. I do wonder how they will deal with the Pym death too. He’s still alive in Ultimates (could change) and he’s still alive in 616 (again can change)

20- What character in the MU has died the most? I wanna say Thor 1st, because of Ragnarok with Jean Grey a close 2nd.

I’m taking Jean in any and all bets. Jean has died a few times. Some would even count Phoenix and Madelyne Pryor but she’s likely got everyone beat in death.

Well, you can’t count Madelyne since she is a separate person (even if she is a clone), but I think it’s probably close to a tie between Magneto and Jean.

21- Did either of you notice that in Ms. Marvel #4 that Carol was talking to her press agent Sarah Day, who informs Carol that she’ll be staying in a hotel under an assumed name: “You’re under the name Linda Danvers, since nobody would be interested in that name.” Aha! That used to be the secret identity of Supergirl back in the day. So is this a shot at the Distinguished Competition?

Could be a shot. I know Marvel has done it before with shots that people sometimes catch. It also could be the writers way to show a tribute to Supergirl in his own ways.

With the addition of “since nobody would be interested in” I’d say it’s probably not a tribute. Not sure if it’s a shot or, or just a comment since “that” supergirl doesn’t even exist anymore since the recent Crisis.

22- Speaking of secret identities, with Iron Man’s outing, Cap’s public opening, Daredevil many exposes, and Spider-Man’s shocker….is the secret identity now dead in the MU?

Not dead just yet. Matt may have gained his back, there’s the fact Spider-Man might switch sides as well. He could do his best to get his identity back.

23- Besides possibly the Black Widow, has there ever been an Avenger who used guns? Especially under Cap’s leadership?

Let’s see.

Widow isn’t the only one.
Two-Gun Kid is an honorary Avenger. Although he didn’t join the team full time.

Other weapon users:
Swordsman and Black Knight use swords
Hawkeye arrows.
Mockingbird quarterstaff

24- So how is the relationships & rosters gonna pan out once the Civil War is all over with, within the New Avengers especially? Any ideas?

I suppose a good amount of pro act people will join Iron Man on a New Avengers roster. Note that there is a title called Mighty Avengers also joining the ranks of titles. It may be Cap’s title. Of course Cap likely will have anti-act heroes on his team. The FF will change too.

25- Even though it is usually Colussus or Beast, has a female teammate ever given Wolverine, the fastball special? With that being said, who in the New Avengers would toss him?

Rogue has thrown Wolverine for a Fastball special before. She does have the ability to and has done it.

As for an Avenger I think logic says Luke Cage might be the one that could do it.

26- Incredible Hulk #340. I know that this book is of battle legend. But can I get a blow by blow of it & how did it start?

Note this issue is a tie in to Fall of the mutants in a way.

X-Men, on their way to Dallas, stop to help people trapped in a blizzard. Wolverine can sense something after Hulk crashed into the jet they are on. He goes out to deal with the issue. He knows it’s the Hulk but with a different scent. After the jet lands and the X-Men are moved into their building Wolverine senses a fire and goes to check it out.
The wind carries his words to Hulk’s ears but doesn’t send Hulk’s scent to him. Hulk leaps at Wolverine. Wolverine hears a low animal growl. He pops his claws and swings around. He keeps his cool, but slashes Hulk’s arm. Hulk clutches his arm where it is cut and says that he will tear him apart for that. He sheaths his claws and apologizes to Hulk. Hulk says that he has to be kidding. Wolverine says that he used to love a fight more than anything, but that he has more important things to do. He says that he won’t fight. Wolverine turns and walks away. Hulk leaps at Wolverine and says that he will die then.

He lands next to Wolverine and says that he hasn’t forgotten the first time they met. Hulk says that all he wanted to be was left alone, but that he wouldn’t back off and that he had to have a piece of him. Wolverine leaps off Hulk’s face and says that he has changed since then. Hulk says that he has gotten smarter, but that Wolverine has only gotten gutless. Wolverine says that knowing when to walk away is more smarts than Hulk will ever have. Hulk swats some snow at Wolverine.

Hulk says that Wolverine is a “spineless wimp” that is looking for excuses to stay away. Hulk says that he might think he is something special, but that he is nothing. Hulk claps his hands together and really hurts Wolverine’s enhanced hearing. Wolverine dodges Hulk’s punch. Wolverine feels the fury, anger, and hatred washing over him. He is tired of fighting himself. Wolverine pops his claws and shouts, “All right!” Wolverine charges Hulk and stabs his claws through Hulk’s torso. Hulk falls to the ground. Wolverine howls at the non-visible moon and knows that the Hulk won.
Wolverine turns and smiles as he walks away. Suddenly he looks back as his senses tell him something. Wolverine says, “He’s standing. He’s alive. He’s actually… getting angrier. He’s getting stronger.”

Hulk clutches his chest as his hand is covered by green blood. Hulk says, “Let’s… let’s… try that… again.” His chest is all healed.

Wolverine hits Hulk with his claws again. Hulk says that his claws didn’t stop him before and that they won’t help him now. Wolverine cuts Hulk again and again, but Hulk keeps healing up. Wolverine says that he always thought that the Hulk’s skin was impenetrable, but that it is only that his cells reproduce so fast that it seems that way. Wolverine says that the madder he gets the more his system speeds up and the faster his cells replicate. Hulk slams Wolverine’s head onto the ground. Wolverine slashes Hulk’s back. He hacks and hacks until Hulk grabs his arm and throws him into a grouping of trees. Wolverine thinks to himself that when two dogs fight that you are supposed turn a hose on them, but that there is no one there to turn the hose on them.

Hulk and Wolverine charge at one another. Hulk asks Wolverine where his big talk is now. Hulk smacks Wolverine. He says that for years they’ve all been laughing at him and taking advantage of him. Hulk says that he is going to start giving all of it back. He sees Wolverine getting up and says that is good. He says that he wants this to last a long time. Suddenly, Hulk is hit by a blast. Hulk and Wolverine look up to see Clay with a cannon on his shoulder. He says that is enough. He says that he doesn’t understand why every time two of the “muscle-bound bozos” get together they have to try and beat one another’s brains in. He says that he thought Hulk wanted to find the gamma bombs and stop the creation of more beings like himself. He says that he is wasting time beating on Wolverine. The fight ends

Phew!!! Back big time. Glad to help out fellas. Have a good week. See ya in 7, Cory out!

That was one good email. Kept my mind active. I’m glad to see you back

Pretty good stuff. I’m still waiting for someone to help me get a good debate going.

I know what you want. You want a debate still. Alright folks I’m putting out a challenge. Debate something with Daron and me. We don’t care what. Daron is getting bored.

Indeed!

Alrighty, I’ll finish us off this week.
