The AP is reporting that former baseball executive Syd Thrift passed away Monday night in Milford, DE.
Thrift worked for many teams in various position, including the Baltimore Orioles, Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago Cubs, Oakland Athletics, New York Mets, San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers and Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The many decisions he was involved with include drafting Barry Bonds in the 1st round (6th pick) of the 1985 amateur draft while with Pittsburgh, and an infamous (in Baltimore, at least) veteran purge in 2000 that yielded exactly one player still in the major leagues, Melvin Mora.
