It appears that French director Luc Besson will retire from filmmaking after the release of his now final project Arthur and the Invisibles. He intends to devote himself instead to civic projects, including starting a foundation to help youths in France’s depressed inner cities.

Now 47, Besson has directed ten films in his career including such hits as The Professional and The Fifth Element but has also been Producer on nearly 80 projects.

It’s a shame to see him leave as both The Professional and The Fifth Element are two of my personal favorite films. Granted he hasn’t directed much to talk about outside of those two movies, but I had always hoped that with his talent he would knock another one out of the park before he left.

We here at Popcorn Junkies wish him the best.
