Remote Destination – Six Degrees 9/21

Shows

Here’s the first thing about this show; it’s got forgettable characters. Or at least characters whose names aren’t memorable. I remember Mae, because it stood out and Whitney also stood out. But Paul stuck in my mind too, and he’s just a supporting characters. So basically I can’t name two thirds of the lead characters. Not a good sign.

I also loathed Carlos’ (I looked up the name) annoying narration in the beginning. Was it really necessary to explain the concept of “six degrees of separation” to folks who are watching the show? The narration was supremely unnecessary.

Speaking of Carlos, I found his actions rather odd. I mean clearly there’s a fine line between “stalking” and “romantic gesture” (and really isn’t that for a judge to decide?) but he went completely overboard it trying to track down Mae. Yeah, he was digging her but c’mon the man too extreme measures for something that was not a sure thing. Honestly I’d have found his actions more justifiable had he spent one night with her and woke up to find her gone. But whatever.

On the opposite end of the spectrum is Steven the troubled photographer. I really appreciated that he’d lost his muse and was working to rebuild the bridges he’d burned. He was the character that I was most interested in, and part of it might have had to do with Campbell Scott, the actor who portrays him. I’m a fan.

But to bounce back to something that didn’t connect with me was Mae’s situation. I don’t really care whom she’s hiding from. I’m really not that interested in her past. I could care less about what she’s got hiding in her closet. So, the one thing that’s designed to capture interest falls flat with me.

Oh and one more thing that I loathed; the Whitney/Paul situation. You could practically smell the writers desperation in trying to be clever. Ooh, it looks like Paul’s looking to cheat. Oh, he’s got an explanation. Ooh, Whitney doesn’t buy it and sets a trap. Oh, he knew it was a trap and proposes to her. Ooh, he really is cheating. Boo.

Basically this show is treading on thin ice with me. But worst-case scenario it’ll end up as this seasons Reunion; a show that I loved to loathe.
