More Reasons Why Being Deaf Sucks/Rocks – Blame Aaron Cameron?

Since my writing schedule has been made considerably less burdensome (giggle) I’ve decided to play a little game.

Well, actually I can’t take all of the credit. Actually this occurred to me when Aaron Cameron paid a visit to Sin City. He came over to the crib and naturally I showed off my cd collection. He made a remark similar to “man, you could turn to a page and write a column.” At that moment a seed was planted.

What’s that, you want more “back story?” Ok, when MGF was being debated I wasn’t really feeling Hip Hop, in fact to be 100% truthful I was darn near anti Hip Hop. However by the time MGF was in full swing I fell back in love with Hip Hop. In an attempt to balance things out if I’m ever favoring one type of music I promise to open up a cd binder of another genre (yeah, my music is organized alphabetically and separated by genre) flip to a page and write about the albums (or singles) on that page.
So let’s begin.

The Hives – Veni Vidi Vicious

Ok, I’ll admit it, I bought into the hype. At the time I had much more income than I do now, so I spent more on music. But this one was pretty much about the hype. I dug the single “Hate to Say I Told You So” which was as catchy as any single should be. I also dug the dress code; the band looked sharp. Ooh, and I recall thinking that the gimmick of the names of the band members was pretty neat as well.

Sadly I couldn’t tell you much about the album. I gave it a spin or two, but moving on to something else that I was feeling at the time, but I couldn’t tell you what it was.

This disc is probably due for a revisiting in the near future. I mean it’s an album that’s six years old. I’m really going to give the album the attention it deserves in the near future. Probably.

Hole – Live Through This

This was one of the albums that I always wanted to pick up, but never had the guts to do so. I was always afraid of being called a fraud. I’m pretty sure that I finally slipped this in with one of my bulk purchases, when I’d plot 12 discs down on the check out counter, hoping that it’d get lost in the mix.

But it was worth the wait in terms of finally purchasing it. It’s a dope album, though it’s debatable how much of a role Courtney played in the dopeness, beyond singing the songs. It’s very much a product of it’s time in that it takes me back to 1994, where I was and what I was doing. It was certainly the first time that I was really interested in anything related to “rock” music. So in kind of reminds me of losing my virginity, in that regard.

Incubus – Make Yourself

Yes, I do own an Incubus album.

Now that that’s out of way, I really only bought it for “Stellar.” What’s that; that’s equally inexcusable? Well I’m all about honesty, so I had to get that out in the open.

I confess to being kind of ashamed about this. I really can’t explain it. I caught the video for “Stellar” and really dug the song. It connected with me on some level. I copped the album for the song. But by the time I was finished with the album it was pretty much like “I get it already, you guys are different.” Before I knew it Incubus were performing in front of screaming audiences, Brandon Boyd had forsake shirts and I had an album that I was kind of ashamed to own. Don’t I get any credit for being tired of them before they got super huge and vastly overrated?

I don’t? Sucks. Look, I didn’t know that that they’d end up sucking so bad. I mean I thought it might be good. I didn’t realize things would go so wrong. Don’t blame me, pity me.

The (International) Noise Conspiracy – The First Conspiracy

I can’t pretend to have purchased this when it first dropped. I actually picked up Survival Sickness first and then came back for this on the strength of that album.

I have to admit that I’m a fan of the group. I dig them musically, but I also dig the idea of trying to meld music and politics together. Yeah, it’s a lofty goal but it’s an entertaining and thought-provoking package. Plus these guys really go hard on both levels. I mean their liner notes are second only to ?uestlove’s in terms of my favorite to read.

Oh yeah, the comic strip on the cover was just the icing on the cake.

And there you have it; a peek into a part of my collection that probably wouldn’t get the spotlight otherwise.

I’ll catch y’all later.
