Gilmore Girls – Season Premiere

Shows

Lorelai and Rory wake up to new realities. Lorelai, to Chris — her pathetic crutch. Rory, to an empty apartment and a strange goodbye gift.

Luke and Logan, for completely different reasons, are no longer every-day fixtures in their lives. Neither is the show’s creator, Amy Sherman-Palladino. And they’re on a new network! Welcome to Season 7 of Gilmore Girls“¦

Rory returns home to Stars Hollow for the summer, but Lorelai refuses to give her or Sookie the full scoop on Luke. Meanwhile, Luke goes ballistic when he realizes the latest brainstorm Taylor and sidekick Kirk have in mind (a camera to monitor red light runners) will be taking place right in front of his diner. At the “opening ceremony”, the camera flashes blind Kirk (who’s already impaired to begin with) – and he and Taylo’s classic automobile wind up parked in Luke’s Diner. Could things get any worse for Luke?

Well, yes. And not just for Luke. Rory returns from town to tell mom all about the hilarious hijinks she just witnessed, and how it reminded her that she didn’t give Fast and the Furious a fair shake the first time around. So we’re supposed to believe that Rory would find Taylo’s car crashing into Luke’s life funny? A very misguided scene. At least Lorelai seemed slightly concerned, yet she’s too busy getting rid of everything in the house that reminds her of you know who”¦

Rory finally figures out the symbolism of the mysterious rocketship gift: an old Twilight Zone episode titled The Long Morrow, where an astronaut is about to embark on a 60-year mission when he meets the love of his life. Pretty cool, I must say (especially considering I’ve seen that episode). Is Logan growing on me? I sure hope not. Rory calls him all excited – ready to pitch her Summer trip to London when Logan beats her to the punch. He already has her plane ticket”¦for Xmas. Will things be the same four months from now? That could feel like 60 years”¦

Luke shows up at Lorelai’s — desperate to make things right. He actually looks like he might pass out at any moment. He starts a little slow out of the gate, then tells her about all the eloping and honeymoon options only a truck-drive away. Lorelai shows barely any emotion, and announces that she slept with Christopher. Luke and his truck are outta there in a hurry”¦

Was Luke’s head in a fog at times last season? Sure. Could he have been more attentive? Without a doubt. But Lorelai buried her feelings for a long time. And her Christopher solution was beyond weak. I have nothing against Christopher. He’s okay for a part-time Dad and a few laughs. A budding relationship with Lorelai? Not interested”¦

I went into this season a little gun-shy, stating in my final Season 6 recap that the show would never be the same. That doesn’t mean I’m no longer a Gilmore Girls fan. But David Rosenthal, who has replaced the Palladinos as the head honcho, has some big shoes to fill. Hopefully, we’re in for better times in Stars Hollow”¦
