Ultimate Marvel Handbook # 184

Features

Hey Daron what’s up this week bud.

Not much bud, just life as usual. I did buy a new car though. My first new car ever!

Well it’s a thin week for emails but I may have a nice debate in this one for you.

Obviously, you don’t care”¦

Let’s start then.

Unless you have something else you’d rather be doing.

Stu emails

Hey guys.

Hey Stu

Again this is just a quicky. And its just a comment from your last ed, of the marvel handbook. (Great Column btw).

Firestar isn’t the only character who started in a cartoon and then moved into comics afterwards.

The first one is a DC girl I’m afraid. Harley Quinn, the Joker’s long suffering girlfriend, started out in the Batman animated series.

The second is a marvel girl. X23, Wolverine’s clone/daughter, made her first appearance in the X-men Evolution cartoon.

Yep I think HERBIE the robot might just be another one

I’m still curious if we have confirmation on Firestar. When was her first comic appearance and when was the show on?

Great work on finding the Thing comic, seriously that has been played on my mind for a ages.

Be Well.

We try to help where we can. Glad it was the right one. See you next time Stu

Hasta.

Greetings. It’d been a while. Let’s get to it. I know everyone’s rushing and gushing to praise the civil war, but frankly it’s getting stupid. Really stupid. They’re making the Pro-Registration side out to be mindless bad guys. Hasn’t Marvel caught on that the reading public isn’t too keen on anything doing with clones? They’ve got one of the most powerful characters MIA and everyone gets excited that he’s back, and it turns out to be an f’ing clone.

Hey man. I like Civil War. The problem is the nit picking at some of the minor flaws. Like the fact pro act seems be villains. Well it‘s hard to show Cap as a villain. Everyone knows Cap and trust Cap. Of course I‘m not a clone lover though

A killer clone, at that. Are you going to tell me that Reed Richards, Reed f’ing Richards for christ’s sake, didn’t put that clone thru rigorous testing before deeming him/it fit for duty? And that during those training sessions and simulations it never came out “wow, this thing sure has a tendency to shoot people through the heart. Let’s use it against all our friends in this last attempt at a peaceful resolution! I’m sure it’ll behave and perform and won’t shoot anyone through the heart.” Reed, Hank, and Tony never noticed the thing’s killer tendencies before unleashing it. Right. They must’ve subcontracted that cloning project out to Microsoft. It was Thor XP. Maybe when they get to service pack 2 he won’t randomly kill people.

Could be a rushed clone but you are right Reed likely would be smarter then to allow it. It could be Tony‘s doing or SHIELD‘s even. But you are correct on that one

Well even though I’m a bit behind in my reading, I have to say I totally agree with what your saying, Only 1. I’m still flabbergasted that Marvel went the clone route at all”¦ever again, especially since they’ve all but said the Spider-Man Clone stuff “never” existed.

As for the story itself, ever since House of M, Marvel’s “big event” has felt rushed. Not to bash the big guys but I’ve felt like this whole string of events/crossovers has been a response to DC’s Infinite Crisis (and the leading miniseries before it as well as 52 following it), except that Marvel’s series just haven’t had the same feeling of foresight that DC’s has. The main reason for this (again in my opinion) is that while DC has a committee of excellent writers leading the charge on their projects, Marvel seems content to throw “flashy” writers at theirs and tell flashy stories that just aren’t as thought out. That again is just one man’s opinion.

Why isn’t Cap taking any blame for Bill Foster’s death? If I recall in CW 3, Tony was the one who was asking for a peace summit, and Cap initiated the fisticuffs. Sure, they took down the teleporters, that’s just strategy. If they wanted, they could’ve tranquilized everyone, or Iron Man could’ve used his sonics.

Well Cap isn’t fully to blame for it. I mean in reality he knew it was a trap. They already had tried the peace thing in Black Panther and it was turned down. Tony didn’t want peace he wanted to trap and capture.

And now you have Tony f’ing Stark, already suspicious that Peter’s loyalty is wavering, and he ignores all the signs and adds more fuel to the fire by blowing Peter off. Ok. Tony’s only a genius and the head of a multi-national corporate empire. I’m sure getting to positions like those, you can’t be any good at reading people, analyzing situations, and anticipating problems. Having your right hand man going around saying “I sure don’t know if I’m on the right side anymore” would make me want to disrespect and alienate him further. But then I’m not a genius or head of a conglomerate.

Well Tony has done this before in ways. Now not to argue with you. Which, I think your right. Tony is smarter than this.

And where is any dissension on Cap’s side? Only the side that’s following a law the people were 90% in favor of is having second thoughts? Ridiculous. The three who left after the big fight only did so out of fear.

What’s Cap really done wrong in the war? He hasn’t killed and most of all most people in Marvel and around know Cap’s normally always right.

All of this is just Marvel painting the Pro side into a corner. In the real world, there wouldn’t be such a thing as a super hero, per se. There would be laws against untrained, unlicensed people flying about and taking the law into their own hands. If you don’t think so I can only assume you’re naive. Most of the people against the registration act are against it because they haven’t considered the implications, and don’t treat it in real world terms. They just think “if I could fly and had super strength, I’d want to be a super hero too! Telling me I couldn’t is just mean. Boo to registration!” And of course you don’t have much of a comics world if everyone who doesn’t want to register just sits at home or actually gets a real job, so there’s that thought process too. So, that’s my piece. Civil War had a lot of potential. It’s being completely wasted in painting both sides with such broad strokes.

I would consider it like the draft in the real world. Let‘s say you have to register for the army and a draft like old days (not volunteer) would you sign or fight it? That‘s the best I can think of comparisons

For a debating topic, I don’t know if you guys have ever done this, but I think a cool contest or poll would be to take different versions and lineups of all the teams and have them face off in a tournament. For instance, you’d have your original xmen vs the traditional FF lineup, the original avengers lineup vs the havok led xfactor, the weak avengers lineup of cap, scarlet witch, quicksilver, and hawkeye against the defenders lineup at the end of their series, and so forth. I think it’d be interesting to see which version of which team would come out on top. There’d have to be some limits, like you couldn’t have the avengers team that had 50 members on it at the start of the second avengers series, and so forth. Just an idea

I think you actually just created a debate topic. You’re email may have actually done it. I’m talking Civil War part. If I’m right this will get some responses. Daron will likely even debate with this one.

But I like your other idea too.

My piece has already been said, if you don’t agree, or even if you do, let us hear about it.

Keep up the good work.

We will man. Great opinions and I hope to hear from you again man.

Julian emails

No, not “Who is Doctor Strange”…I write regarding more patriotic characters. This time, Captain America. Follow me here…I found out Robert Downey Jr had somehow landed the role of Tony Stark/Iron Man in another revelation of comics-to-film blasphemy (Stark: The AA Years?) and directed some non-Stark educated friends to Wikipedia.

While at Wikipedia, I came across a listing for Captain America.

Captain America.

Assuming all the posting to be true, I ask for your clarity and insight on a few items:
1. Since WHEN is Cap’s shield NOT made from Adamantium and Vibranium?

The shield predates True Adamantium. It can be said the shield is a form of proto-adamantium. Labeling it a mystery steel alloy is also misleading–Steel is a known component in the adamantium process.

Dr. Myron MacLain was attempting to perfect an indestructible alloy, as strong as the legendary ‘adamantine’ which Hercules’ Golden Mace was made from. He was hoping the alloy would provide a distinct advantage in the armor of American war vehicles, such as tanks. While he was asleep as a result of his exhaustion, an unknown factor caused the metals he was working with to bond. However, the unique nature of its creation made this impossible. The alloy was poured into the shape of a disc – presumably also forging the titanium steel bolts into it that its straps are fastened to – and only afterward was the decision made to let Captain America use it as a shield. It was painted in its familiar red-white-and blue using titanium oxide paint. On occasions it has been repainted.

Later, MacLain’s attempts to duplicate the shield minus Wakandan Vibranium and the mystery factor resulted in true Adamantium.

Captain America has also used a number of other shields:

Several steel shields in a semi-triangular shape.

Two Wakandan Vibranium shields, given to him by the Black Panther, one in the triangular shape and the other in the circular shape.

A shield composed of True Adamantium, given to him by Iron Man (Tony Stark) while he was using the identity of the Captain.

An Energy shield from Sharon Carter, which was capable of changing shape due to a ‘flexibility matrix.’

A round Osmium steel shield from Doctor Doom.

2. The Weapon Plus program…just when did the Cap = Weapon I (as in
Weapon X, etc) retconn happen?!?

New X-Men #128. They made Weapon X into Weapon Plus. Weapon I, aka Project: Rebirth, managed to produce the first Captain America (Steve Rogers). Prototypes created by Project: Rebirth include Protocide (Weapon 0), a failed experiment who was placed in suspended animation and was revived in the modern era by AIM, and the African-American soldiers (most prominently Isaiah Bradley) who were subjected to potentially fatal experiments at Camp Cathcart, as seen in Truth: Red, White and Black in an attempt to recreate/improve the formula which worked on Rogers. It’s also been revealed that one of the first mutant experiments was created during this time, designated Queen. Weapon Plus considers Captain America as its most successful creation, despite the fact that Rogers has been at odds with the United States government a number of times. Although there were many later attempts to recreate or reverse-engineer Project: Rebirth’s Super-Soldier Serum, none are known to have been involved with Weapon Plus.

3. Nick Fury drinks Infinity Formula?!? What is this and when was this revealed?

Somewhere around 1945-1963 when he was OSS/CIA Years. The end of the war brought many changes to Fury’s life, foremost Among them the revelation that his life was to extend far further then he had ever expected. On a mission in France near the end of the war, Fury was inoculated with the “Infinity Formula” by Professor Berthold Sternberg following a potentially fatal injury. Endowed with a process which granted him a substantially slower aging process, Fury was thrust with a double edged sword; although his life was saved, the consequences of the Infinity Formula would haunt him throughout his life as he would see many friends age and die, as well as become the target of various villains seeking his secret.

4. In the What If?!? issue “What if Captain America Became President”, Cap gets assasinated. Who was the killer? Was it the Red Skull, again?

In 1956, Rogers wins the election and arrives in the White House. He promises to distribute the serum to all US citizens, but later announces that as the serum was created for his body, members of different heritage groups may suffer damage to the immune system if they take the serum. At a meeting, a SHIELD agent named Horatio asks Rogers to consider what would happen if the public discovers that the serum given to minorities was tainted, and that the booster shot scare in 1944 was a sham. Rogers shoots Horatio. Of course we learn the president version was really Red Skull. Cap was frozen and forms the Avengers to take care of him

Cory emails

Hey guys….Cory’s here…Let’s go:

Hey Cory good to see you bud

1. CANNONBALL!!! He joined the X-Men, becoming the first member of a secondary team to “graduate.” His tenure was complicated by clashes with superiors and he eventually rejoined X-Force. What type of problems, and with which superiors?

Well being the rookie he tried to fit in and had a hard time at first since most of the X-Men where idols. As he grew into the role and clashed with Wolverine and Storm about Marrow. Which led to him leaving.

It also didn’t help that the writers at the time wrote him as if he truly was a “rookie” and not intelligent leader that he had been with X-Force for many years.

2. It was early during this time that Sam was impaled and killed by the mutant Sauron during a clash with an incarnation of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. However, only a few minutes later, he was miraculously alive again. It was revealed that Cable had chosen Sam to lead the New Mutants initially because he suspected Cannonball to be an External – a particularly rare type of mutant who is virtually immortal. Cable had come to train Sam to fight Apocalypse, another External who, in Cable’s future time, had conquered the world. This aspect of Cannonball may have been retconned, as it has not been brought up in many years. Selene once claimed that Cannonball was not an External, though she is not a particularly trustworthy source and no alternate explanation has been given for his surviving the wounds Sauron had inflicted. His immortality was recently brought up as the reason he survived 3 gunshot wounds to the chest in New X-Men #28, so his status as an External hasn’t been completely forgotten by Marvel writers. So is he an External or not? Or is this a continuity or ret-con error like the current Civil War?

He’s not external. They likely would’ve kept him as such if not for the liable lawsuit. The fact that he could be immortal still exist though.

3. During his time with X-Men, Cannonball found his relationship with Tabitha strained. It was so strained that Tabitha turned to Sam’s best friend, Sunspot, for “support”. Define “support” for me fellas??

hehe Well if you take what happened. She went to him and they started a relationship. So support I guess was them making out and getting caught lol.

4. During this time, Cannonball even defeated the Superman-like Shi’ar agent, Gladiator in single combat–a feat no X-Man has ever matched (indeed, only the Hulk and Thor can claim an equal victory). With this type of victory under his belt, how come he hasn’t been elevated to the front of Marvel characters? I mean Hulk has lost to Wolverine before, etc.

Because the miss use of him ever since that little fight. None of the writers have really used him the way they should’ve afterwards.

Or as I stated beforehand. Sam is a truly great character who gets lost in the sea of mediocre characters flooding the pages of the X-Men.

5. His time with the X-Corporation wasn’t a pleasant one. Enroute to one mission later found to involve the Weapon Plus program, his teammate Darkstar poked fun at him for eating a sandwich that would have rather distasteful consequences for “everybody who went out without an umbrella in downtown Beauvais”. What the hell does that quote mean? Or am I the only lost one?

You know I’m lost on this one too

6. (Taken from last week’s column)–> Also you are right there is no wrong or right answer on this one. I think it depends a lot on the character. Someone like say Sue Storm might be more safe then some others. She’s the type of character that if you try to harm her your just going to get more trouble. What other characters, would also fall into this category? That if you try to harm them more trouble will follow.

How about: Rogue. For one her powers would come into play. Another factor would be the X-Men and Gambit. Any female with a connection to Wolverine also comes into this area in ways. He’ll come after your ass.

7. (Taken from last week’s column)–> Most heroes don’t kill too many people, villains do. Hmm? What about anti-heroes, like Deadpool & Wolverine?

Anti-Heroes: Deadpool, Wolverine, Punisher and the like do whatever it takes to get the job done which would count killing.

Can you really even count Deadpool as an Anti-Hero?

8. How many current heroes, villians, or supporting cast got their start elsewhere, Example: Firestar started out in the old Spider-man and his amazing friends cartoon, THEN became a comic book hero. What about Wolverine in Hulk #181? Deadpool in New Mutants? Sabretooth in Iron Fist? or Black Panther in FF?, and various others?

I think he meant in other media. Not in other Marvel comics. Would make another category with that.

I believe Cory wants to know what characters started out either in other media OR in other comics not their own via the examples he gave.

9. So, She-Hulk has been with Juggernaut & Luke Cage, any other men with super-strength have been her “friends with benefits”?

Does Man-Wolf count?

Others:

Man-Thing
Starfox

That’s about it.

10. About my X-men protocol question from last week, Thanks. But what about an Avengers Protocol? Not New Avengers or Mighty, but the classic roster?

ok this will be harder. I think I’ll make a nice roster for this. I know there’s a ton more I can do.

Cap: attack the super soldier formula and make it age him to his real age.
Thor: You somehow lock him off Earth. Because taking him down will be a pain.
Iron Man: Find a way to take down the armor. Also bankrupt Stark and get him back to drinking.
Scarlet Witch: Let Doctor Strange deal with her. He’s the only one who could.
Hawkeye: Knock out the rest of his hearing and then cripple him
Black Widow: Turn everyone against her and force a hunt.
She-Hulk: Force her back into Jen and then keep her that way.
Ms Marvel: Get Rogue to go after her again.
Hank Pym: Force him to grow too big or shrink so small it takes out his heart.
Wasp: shrink her to atomic size and keep her stuck like that.
Vision: Take him apart.
Black Panther: Send him to Wakanda and force him to stay.

11. The top 10..swore we did this one also..but here: 1- Luke Cage, 2- Hawkeye, 3- Taskmaster, 4- Dr. Strange, 5- Thor.

I think your right again. My god we need some new top ten ideas. Cory challenge for you next email give me a top ten of new Top ten challenges.

12- So Robert Downey, Jr. is gonna be playing Tony Stark. What ya think? One heartthrob, former substance abuser & playboy to another. Not a big stretch for him. But I like it. I hear that Terrence Howard may be James Rhodes and Famke Janssen as the love interest. Mandarin is the villain. Here’s the plot: Tony Stark develops the three stages of the Iron Man armor, starting with “clunky, low-tech… diving bell armor” that he is forced to build in Afghanistan. Stark eventually updates the armor to a flying suit with the red and gold scheme and finally attains a “weapons platform” stage with the armor. Stark faces the villain Mandarin.

Sounds like a perfect plot. I have less problems with Downey then others. You have someone who can pull off drunk Tony too. But the Famke thing I don‘t like. Sorry.

Yeah I’m not big on them using the same actors/actresses for all the comic movies. There are plenty of people they could find for various roles. To me the most surprising thing about this announcement is Jon Favreau as director. Don’t get me wrong I like the guy but he just seems like an odd choice to be directing this project.

13- Has it ever been determined as to what the “Super-Soldier Serum” consists of? In scientific details?

Nope. The creator was killed off before anyone really could found out.

14- By the way, my question that stumped you last week was: Marvel Knights: Spider-Man #18. The Tiller. Real name, Ethan Edwards. Powers were, Super strength, speed, eye beams, etc. It was later revealed that he was after Tony Stark, and that he was a shape-shifting Skrull with a healing power of sorts. Also that Spidey said that he dressed like a fan of the Punisher & resembled “The Gimp” in Pulp Fiction. Care to give me more information, if you can?

.Oh you mean the Superman like character.

Real Name: Ethan Edwards
Aliases: Virtue, The Tiller
Dual Identity: Known to everyone
Occupation: Aid worker, Reporter, Daily Bugle
Citizenship: U.S.
Legal Status: No criminal record
Place of Birth: Unkown
Marital Status: Single
Known Relatives: Ma Edwards, Pa Edwards (Parents) un named sister
Bases: New York, Manhattan, Iowa
Groups: None
Education: Unknown
Height: Unknown
Weight: Unknown
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Blond
Features: Revolving superhero wardrobe
Strength Level: Able to lift a maximum of 100 tons.

Powers: Following the manipulation of Ethan’s DNA as an infant on his home planet, he now possesses a wide range of superhuman powers. Effectively making him a superman among superheroes. In addition to his vast strength He can withstand extremes of temperature and the explosive effects of armour-piercing bazooka shells and bombs. He is able to traverse the sky with the speed and dexterity equal to that of the Human Torch, and can reach an estimated top speed of Mach 3. He also has an X-ray vision, and can see through any material and in any light spectrum. Finally Ethan can produce powerful heat blasts from his hands that can be used to subdue enemies or be focused toward more destructives ends.

History: One night, Ethan’s parents-to-be were driving home to their Iowa farm when a large metal object seemingly from space crashed with him inside. The couple decided that a miracle had occurred, that they were judged to be worthy and a child was given to them as a gift from God. The Edwards’s gave him a strong moral background, taught him the value of hard work and humility. Years later, Ethan told them he wanted to leave the farm and go to the city. As he prepared to leave, Mr. Edwards gave him a piece of advice he would never forget: that “with great power, there must also come great responsibility”
Arriving in New York City, Ethan began work as the new star reporter at The Daily Bugle. He also began fighting crime as a costumed superhero, calling himself Virtue, which soon brought him into contact with fellow Bugle employee and NYC superhero, Peter Parker, the Amazing Spider-Man.

Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four performs tests on Ethan to uncover the origin of his powers. Reed discovers Ethan is as fast as the Human Torch, can see Sue when she’s invisible, lift as much weight as Ben and heal injuries.

After a fight, the press show up and Virtue takes off to protect his identity, but the press got a full facial photograph of Ethan as Virtue. On the roof, Peter Parker tells Ethan they’ve got a picture of him, but he says it’s okay because his glasses will hide his identity. They go inside and, as the two of them step out of the elevator, the press surrounds Ethan and want to talk to him. Reed calls Peter to explain that Ethan is a Skrull, whose father created the Super-Skrull, and that Ethan was sent to Earth to conquer it.

Jonah calls Ethan into his office and tells him he’ll let things go if he gives the paper the exclusive story on Virtue. Ethan refuses and flies through the window. Peter goes after him but Ethan takes off again for Iowa, leaving Pete to wonder how he’s going to get there. The Fantastic Four are examining the ship Ethan arrived in when a bright yellow light comes out of it. It shines on Ethan, who begins speaking another language until the Thing smashes it into the atmosphere. When Ethan re-awakens, he lashes out at the FF, then begins to have some sort of nervous breakdown before flying off.

Back at the Daily Bugle, Ethan Edwards researches who and what the Skrull are, coming to think he is a “murderous Skrull”. Confused and angry, he searches the Baxter Building for Reed Richards, but the man isn’t home. When Spider-Man and The New Avengers arrive, a fight starts, but “a little old lady” tells Ethan he’s not a monster but a good man. Spider-Man tells Ethan he has something no one does, “healing power”, and a lot of people out there need healing. Later, Reed Richards revealed that the starship didn’t give Ethan his ability to heal others, leaving Spider-Man to wonder where it actually came from.

Long work week, more stuff next week guys. Promise ya. Thanks as always. Cory out! See ya in 7!

Hope you have a better week next time Cory. Welcome as always.

Story

There’s another edition of the Marvel Handbook for everyone. What did you think, Daron?

I think it’s about time you come up with a better way to introduce the end of the column”¦but that’s just me.

I actually was shocked at the response but heck I bet next week will be jam packed.

Really? A 21 page WORD document isn’t long enough for you?

1. Marvel.com poll What has been the most shocking event in Civil War?

Guess not”¦

2. Digital comics Comics you can read online

3. Marvel is in the process of adding new bios and added a ton of new ones. Check them out here

4. As always your opinions on anything in the article or out on the shelves is welcome. After all you never know what type of response you will get.

5. Keep those emails coming and make sure to label them Marvel Handbook. The more emails the better the article is.

And we’re out”¦
