A Case of the…. Smallville

Shows

As I mentioned in the excerpt, I now find the Lana Lang character completely unbearable. I mean, geez, Lex tries to kill her, and what does she do? Move in with him. Then she finds out that he has a video tape in her room, and does she move out? Nope, she just takes his word that he camera will be removed, despite doing positively nothing to earn her trust. Meanwhile, Clark can friggin save the world (and she’ll know of his heroism), but not call her, and she’ll be a total bitch to him for several episodes.

Am I to believe that Lana is such an atrocious judge of character that she can’t see the difference between Clark and Lex, despite not knowing Clark’s secret? I mean, for how many years did Chloe not know Clark’s secret (and, for that matter, was blatantly suspicious that he was hiding something), and she STILL could see through Lex, and knew that deep down Clark was somebody she could rely on. I understand being hurt by somebody you love and resenting them for it, and I understand having feelings for somebody when you know it’s not right….but I just find her overall behavior unbelievable and, to be honest, painful to watch.

On top of that, what was up with her telling Clark not to pretend like him saving Lex is about Lex. Granted, she was right (he was doing it to protect his secret), but she didn’t know the real reason, which means she suspected he was doing it for her. GET OFF YOUR F’N HIGH HORSE. Seriously, does this girl have such a high opinion of herself that she thinks every little thing any guy does is about her? For that matter, she puts so much emphasis on trust and telling the truth, yet refuses to recognize that many, many things in this world are more important and bigger than telling Lana Lang the truth.

Kristin Kreuk is an absolutely gorgeous girl and seems like a genuinely sweet person, but the Lana character really needs to be written off of the show.

To paraphrase an inappropriate expression, Lana Lang…..see you next Thursday.

Moving on….

What made the annoying Lana stuff even worse is the fact that I’m a real sucker for the episodes that Clark discovers a new ability, because they’re always so cleverly written. With X-Ray vision, he was getting headaches. Getting aroused sparked his heat vision. Temporary blindness brought upon his super hearing. Here, his immune system made him realize that he has super lung capacity. It’s been a while since we’ve seen Clark discover a new power, so it was a refreshing episode in that sense.

I also quite enjoyed Chloe’s guidance on how to use his new ability to his advantage. In the past, Jonathan had done this (particularly with controlling his heat vision and super hearing). By the way, aren’t there some, like, serious issues with blowing a storm in another direction? Did we learn nothing from watching Bruce Almighty?

I also appreciate Clark’s new independence, and willingness to just want to be done with Lex. By the way, if the mansion was swarming with so much security, how did Clark just waltz right in?

I thought the introduction of Green Arrow was marvelously done, as his past with Lex (as well as his knowledge of his temporary abilities, and Clark’s natural abilities) gives them a logical reason to be tied together.

Lionel continues to be a highlight of the show, due to his complex nature. I liked the way he stood up for Lex, showing that, deep down, he truly does care about his son. His motives and intentions are always under suspicion, but it does seem like, underneath it all, he is possibly a good man.
