Romo Rants: Heroes – Episode 3

The cracks are begining to show in my favourite new series and I’m none to pleased about it.

After three episodes I cringe every time Ali Larter’s character comes on screen. To put it simply “I don’t get her, and I don’t care.” Her whole “super power” seems more like schizophrenia than an actual ability. Her son, who has been hinted at having powers of his own, is a non-entity. Her backstory is convoluted and uninteresting.

Those problems have been builing but several new ones appeared this week.

Let’s look at the whole death scene of Claire the cheerleader. First off can the whole attempted rape by the school’s quaterback be any more cliche? I understand date rape of that sort does happen, probably more than anyone would like to admit, but can’t the writers come up with a more original way of writing it into the plot. I felt like they just copy and pasted the scene from one of a hundred 80’s movies.

So then now she is “dead” because of the big thing jutting into her brain. What’s the first thing the doctor is going to do? Yeah let’s order an autopsy. Uh…duh…. I think its pretty obvious how she died. You don’t need to cut her open to figure that out. And honestly if they were going to do an autopsy they would have taken that thing out of her head before fileting her open. That scene was totally done for effect, but it felt so fake.

Lastly there is the new bad guy, Skylar. So seemingly this guy can control….everything. Or damn near close to it. He can take three bullets and be none worse for the wear. He can jump/fly. He can make people put guns to their heads. This leads to one big question, how the hell can anyone, even super heroes, stop him? Sure its cool to build a super villain that will be difficult to start, but in the few glimpses of Skylar they’ve made him out to be unstopable and that my friend is just not fun.

Why do you ask? Well for one they will find a way to stop him, the good guys always do, and along the way there will be some plot turn revealing Skylar’s weakness/vulnerability or the group working together will somehow overcome the fact he is unstopable.

But the thing that upsets me most about Heroes you ask? I still like most of the characters and the show in general, so I will keep watching and try to get past all of its flaws, hoping and praying it can heal them as fast as Claire can heal from her injuries.
