Cable for One – Jericho – Episode 4

Shows

It certainly didn’t take long for the citizens of Jericho to develop a “Jericho first” mentality. Not that you can really blame people for clinging to what is familiar given the possible annihilation of most of their country.

Of course, it was a pretty short road from looking out for the town’s best interest to people starting to look out for their own best interest. So far it seems to be mostly cases of people hoarding products and refusing to share with others but I’m sure that the situation will only continue to get worse as the crisis drags on and resources become more and more scarce.

It was interesting to see that Jake was the only one who really resisted the ‘Protect our own at the expense of others’ mentality given that he is, of course, basically an outsider himself. If Jake’s not careful, he’s likely to find himself excluded from the whole “Jericho first” philosophy.

We got a bit more information on the attacks this week as the townspeople have found a satellite feed which depicts the aftermath of one of the explosions. The townsfolk speculated that it might be Cincinatti but my knowledge of American cities is woefully lacking so I can’t confirm that myself.

Also it seemed pretty strange that someone, somewhere, has access to a satellite feed but have chosen only to play the same few seconds of footage on a continous loop. I’m guessing that we will get an explanation for it later but it seems pretty strange right now.

Most of the big news coming out of this week’s episode centered around Hawkins. Not only has Hawkins manufactured a story to share with the town, he is drilling that story, along with all the little details, into his family before he’s going to allow them to interact with the townsfolk (which explains his “We’re not ready” comment last week).

The man with the radiation poisoning, Victor Miller, was also revealed to be linked to Hawkins. Hawkins told him they were only supposed to take their families with them and the team was a member short now (with Miller dying). So presumably Hawkins and those he is with knew something about the explosions before they occurred.

And we also learned that the team or group Hawkins is a part of was betrayed somehow. Whatever is going on with Hawkins, I have the feeling it will turn out to be more innocent than it seems, simply because Hawkins is too suspicious (if he was involved in something really bad we’d probably get far fewer clues about that involvement).

In an interesting side note, an astute viewer e-mailed me to let me know that the Terms of Service that appears on screen (near the end of the message when Hawkins is sending a message about the rally point) is from MackayComm. Apparently MackayComm is a company that deals with satellite communications and the like. The terms of service make it pretty clear that no part of the site can be reproduced without permission so either it was some really obscure product placement (though a pretty strong one considering their satellite technology apparently works just fine in the event of nuclear holocaust) or else it is a minor clue. If you look at the actual ToS, it mentions the site is run out of Illinois, while the company itself is based out of North Carolina. Not sure if either of those details are the least bit relevant but you never know.
