TV Babies: A Rebel Without a Clue…

The return of the Gilmores Senior, plus
a declaration from Christopher — are the hot button topics this week”¦

Lorelai is obviously dreading Friday Night Dinner (the first in three weeks) more than usual due to the inevitable subject of conversation: Luke and the breakup. Yet Richard & Emily have little to say on the matter. Perplexed as to why they have so little to say, Emily simply replies that nothing they say will help matters. This only frustrates Lorelai all the more.

Back in Stars Hollow, it’s the Grand Re-Opening of Luke’s Diner”¦and something’s different: Miss Patty and Babette are sure of it. The drapes? The chairs? The menu? Luke makes a futile attempt to convince them otherwise. He should know better. After a lot of stalling, Lane finally announces to Zach (and Brian) that she’s pregnant. Following a brief pause, Zach bolts out of the room — exclaiming “Brian must be freaking out!” Zach then seems to slip into denial, yet he’s really just freaked out that Lane isn’t freaked out. Lane assures him she is. Back on the Yale campus, Paris is still
running her S.A.T. torture course.

So Lorelai now doubts every personality trait that makes her who she is. Does she really like Pop Tarts? Or did she just condition herself to like them as a kid because she knew it would drive her parents nuts? Are her parents essentially her anti-compus? I don’t think I like where this is going: by episode’s end Lorelai’s decided that mock-cotillions for 10-year-olds might not be so bad after all.

Rory still likes Pop Tarts, but continues to struggle in dealing with long-distance Logan. Paris suggests phone-sex, or text-sex? Whatever it’s called, Rory and Logan have lowered themselves to the point of copying Paris & Doyle. I get the feeling another guy will enter the picture once she gets back to Yale. Marty perhaps? Rory also receives a phone call from Dad/Christopher, asking if she’s free for dinner. She accepts.

Which brings us to Lorelai’s kitchen, where Rory and Christopher are feeding Paul Anka Key Lime pie. Rory makes a not-so discreet exit so the two grownups can talk. They exchange in bad small talk (is there any other kind?) at first. Lorelai offers coffee and Christopher accepts, then declines. He can’t do this anymore. He’s in love with her. She’s always been the one”¦Is anybody buying this? Apparently, for now, Lorelai is.
