WWE Gets Mainstream Press Coverage

Houseshows, News, Reviews, Shows

Jimmy Kimmel showed three clips from the Kevin Federline/John Cena segment on Monday during Wednesday night’s show, and E!’s The Soup also showed clips. Also, the Calgary Sun has a story on WWE’s recent celebrity tie-ins. This has turned out to be a successful publicity stunt for World Wrestling Entertainment.

WWE has gotten quite a bit of coverage in various outlets:

– An interview with WWE CFO Mike Sileck can be read at CFO.com, while Vince McMahon was interviewed by Jim Cramer at TheStreet.com (subscribers can read Cramer’s column on WWE’s stock here.

The Victoria Advocate in Steve Austin’s announced home town of Victoria, TX, has a story about Austin’s adopted father Ken Williams, who has recently beaten cancer of the tongue. Austin was in Victoria on Wednesday to promote the Jackson County Relay for Life, and will be signing autographs to benefit the American Cancer Society while also matching whatever money is raised. Austin says he quit using smokeless tobacco cold turkey as soon as he heard his father got cancer, and he moved them in with him in his San Antonio home while he underwent chemo and radiation. While the cancer was in advanced stages, Ken got a clean bill of health, which is obviously great news.

This Filipino outlet covers Dave Bautista’s visit to the country (he is half-Filipino). Also, WWE.com has posted several stories on this week’s Asia trip and PulseWrestling reader Michael316 sent in the following report/commentary from the October 21 Smackdown house show in Manila:

Paul London & Brian Kendrick defeated KC James & Idol Stevens with a double super kick to retain their Tag Team Championship. Of note was Michelle McCool who came out of the curtain briefly, nearly about to come out with London & Kendrick.

Vito defeated the Miz with the Edgecution

Bobby Lashley beat SIR William Regal after a spear. Of note was a segment where Regal feigned a leg injury (for a few minutes too long) in order to get the advantage.

Gregory Helms retained his Cruiserweight Championship with a clean pin on the former Flying Elvis and current redneck, Jimmy Wang Yang.

The Undertaker defeated Mr. Kennedy (… Kennedy) with a tombstone. Kennedy got tremendous heat for siding with Morales against Filipino hero Manny Pacquiao in their upcoming bout.

Fit Finlay used interference from the Li’l Bastard and a shillelagh shot to the leg to pin Matt Hardy.

Chris Benoit used his crisp offense to tap Chavo Guerrero out with the Crippler Crossface to retain the US Title.

Batista won over Booker King (All hail King Booker!), but not the World Heavyweight Championship when the Finlay and Regal caused a DQ. The tag team champs came out to stop the beatdown but were quickly disposed of. Taker then came out to even things out. Booker started the match by berating Batista. A (male) fan had a disturbing sign that said “Batista is sexy.” Booker promptly (and correctly) called that kid a homo. The King continued his verbal tirade against Batista and the Filipinos to tremendous heel heat… almost as big as the cheers the Filipino-Greek Batista received.

Anyway it was a good show.

– There’s an interview with Edge on the Web site for the Montreal Canadiens.

– Kanyon says some nice things about Ric Flair here in response to the verbal sparring they had on Howard Stern this week. Also FYI, Brooke Hogan will be promoting her CD on Stern next week.
