Body Blows: Mexican Glory PPV results and Mike Tyson’s exhibition

Results

Juan Manuel Marquez was taken off of the Mexican Glory pay-per-view card when his opponent, Jimrex Jaca, had problems with his visa. As people too boring to come up with something of their own say: the show must go on. The show indeed went on but not very many people watched it, and that’s why you have come to me.

Daniel Ponce De Leon vs. Al Seeger

This WBO Super Bantamweight Title contest became the main event by default. Ponce De Leon is the champion and holds a record of 29-1 (27 KOs). He has held the belt for one year. The challenger, Al Seeger, hails from Savannah, Gerogia, and has a record of 27-1 (21 KOs). A member of Golden Boy Promotions, Ponce De Leon was looking to take full advantage of the spotlight that was handed to him.

Daniel Ponce De Leon is known for being a slugger that is not willing to back off his opponent. The first three rounds saw Al Seeger learn that the hard way. Ponce De Leon stalked Seeger, connecting with just about everything he was throwing at the challenger. Things got worse for Seeger in the fourth round when he was put down to the canvas by a left straight. Seeger was getting beat up, but wouldn’t go away. Ponce De Leon got dirty in the fifth round by showing he could connect more than just punches. The champ used elbows like he was Kenny Florian. Perhaps not that blatant, but the referee turned a blind eye to it.

Seeger continued his valiant effort but had nothing left to defend himself. He was deducted a point in the eighth round for holding. Shortly after that, Seege’s corner threw in the towel. That stopped the fight and gave Ponce De Leon a TKO victory. After the fight, Ponce De Leon called out Rafael Marquez and Israel Vazquez. Interestingly, he failed to mention Celestino Caballero. It’s interesting not only because Caballero is the only man to defeat Ponce De Leon or because he’s the current WBA champion, but also because Caballero was being carried around ringside after the fight to taunt the winner. I don’t have time for this out of the super bantamweights. Just make the rematch.

Juan Lazcano vs. Manuel Garnica

What was supposed to be an easy win for Lazcano turned into a controversial decision. Perhaps because Lazcano himself thought it would be an easy win, Garnica was able to control the welterweight contest. The fight was in Lazcano’s hometown of El Paso, Texas but even his hometown fans couldn’t be fooled.

Garnica would stick and move on Lazcano which didn’t give him much opportunity to get a rhythm. Lazcano looked lazy in the ring and eventually became frustrated with Garnica’s style. Freddie Roach, Lazcano’s trainer, told his fighter he need a knockout in the final round to win. That didn’t happen, but Lazcano was awarded the split decision anyway to the dismay of the fans that originally supported Lazcano. Even worse, the cards in favor of Lazcano were 98-92 and 97-93.

Antonio Escalante vs. Omar Adorno

This fight really doesn’t warrant a write-up. Escalante knocked Adorno out in the second round of their super bantamweight bout. It does warrant a post-knockout picture of Escalante giving it to Adorno.

I don’t care who you are. That’s funny.

I Reluctantly Present”¦Mike Tyson’s World Tour

I’m sure more people care about this travesty than any other fight from this weekend so here you go. Two men over 40 fought an exhibition match in Youngstown, Ohio last Friday. One of them wore headgear during the fight and both of them wore T-Shirts. The one without headgear was former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson. The other guy was his former sparring partner Corey Sanders.

Even with headgear and fifty pounds on Iron Mike, Sanders tasted the canvas in the first round. Tyson must have been concerned that an actual fight might take place so he spent the rest of the round holding Sanders up. As you would expect, the crowd of 4,000 was not happy with this. While Tyson did his best to protect Sanders over the next three rounds, the crowd did their best to boo Tyson out of the building. No winner was announced for the fight because it wasn’t a real fight.

“I don’t know what people were looking for,” said promoter Sterling McPherson, who said Tyson will chose among eight locations for his next fight. “We weren’t trying to fool anyone or pull the wool over anyone’s eyes. This was an exhibition. People boo at real fights. … This isn’t about him beating anybody up.”

It’s about Mike Tyson. It is absolutely about beating someone up.
