Make Movement: Is WWE Even Trying?

Columns

Remember what I said about bad stereotypes are in bad taste such as Cryme Tyme? It’s still true. You know how WWE will defend itself if the NAACP ever decide to go after the WWE? By calling it entertaining. And yet, the WWE has these two guys always facing guys who are of course not going to get a bigger pop than them (Spirit Squad, Viscera and Haas), so the glorified bad stereotype gets acute angle cheers. It’s this kind of entertainment (and I’m not limiting it to just bad stereotypes for African Americans, they’ve done it to all races really–remember the Mexicools on tractors?) that makes me hope that my friends who watch pro wrestling never do.

Vince McMahon and his booking committee, instead of taking wrestlers and letting them wrestle is so character dependent and thinks we all tune in to watch characters and not wrestlers. How much more filler of the Marine outtakes can you take? Can’t Vince just accept that he lost money by making this movie? John Cena is not the Rock, no matter how they try to make him the Rock. Last night, the match going into the PPV was Cena versus Coach. WWE should be thankful that the Vikings/Patriots game was practically a blowout. If they turn Coach, it will ultimately mean nothing because what’s he going to do, lead DX to fight Vince? It would make more sense if Eric Bischoff swerves, because WWE needs a shot of excitement it doesn’t have right now. I wouldn’t even mind a double swerve, swerving to look like he’s joining DX and then swerve again and bring back the nWo or WCW. TNA looks great right now because they are more focused on the wrestling, then the characters. All I can do is sigh and hope it gets better. If you watched RAW last night and hoped you were going to get a quality show to promote the upcoming PPV, Cyber Sunday, then I’m sorry that you got let down.

The WWE’s X Division (Carlito, Hardy, Nitro, Benjamin) has a real shot of being a show stealer on Sunday because they are putting on refreshing matches when they are given TV time. Anything beats the same old song and dance, fans even look engage during their matches lately. My pick would be Carlito because I’m interested in seeing a good match against two faces. I’m not sure how I feel about Carlito acting like a coward as a way to get girls instead of just acting “cool” and why they must lean Torrie Wilson on him like a prop. His little tangle with Trish Stratus was more than enough of a brush/boost, he doesn’t need Torrie too. It doesn’t seem to have a real point, and that’s sad, Carlito has so much charisma and ability, he is more like the Rock then John Cena.

The WWE’s Women’s Division is barely existing without Trish, but it doesn’t make it any less insulting when neither Jim Ross or Jerry Lawler want to help push the women’s match on Sunday. It’s not out of character for Lawler to focus on the T&A factor, but Ross did the girls no favor. Why not act like a level A commentator and bring up Lita and Mickie’s capable abilities to wrestle instead of humoring Lawler? Mickie James has the ability to do a No DQ and a Submissions Match (check out any match with Trish Stratus or any of her Ring of Honor tapes), and I would much rather see either style over Diva Lumberjacks. A No DQ would be far more compelling because her and Lita have every ability to build a good feud, a Divas Lumberjacks would feel like once again the Women’s Division is just one giant joke to the booking committee in the back. I’m still looking forward to the match, and if Lita feels like working, it could end up surprising their critics.

No matter how people feel about how Triple H is booking himself in DX, and looking stronger in the match on RAW, it can’t be denied DX is selling tickets and merchandise. I thought the surprise pedigree in the beginning was a good move because I was calling it to happen during the match. However, DX still needs a third guy of any sort. Apparently, two of the top faces have no friends to bail them out in their times of need, with the exception of the sometimes John Cena. Why not make a new angle where DX openly admits to being on the search for the next cool guy to join their clique? They could stretch it out for a while, studying talent (and they could study the girls too, to fall in line with their style), showing up in random spots but not letting on who they are studying or what they are thinking. Then one day, they come out with a mic and a shirt, and crown the next member of DX.

As far as the Umaga push, my suggestion is let him be the one to beat the Big Show to become the ECW World Champion if he’s wrestling hurt and needs a break. It would seem realistic since they are both big guys and Umaga has the skills to be fast on his feet. Otherwise, I find myself bored with the squashes every week and I’d be less than thrilled to have him as the marketed champion of the RAW brand.

If TNA wants to make a real impact, this is the time to go head to head with the WWE as they flounder for ways to keep people from watching Monday Night Football. Speaking of, sadly my Panthers got embarrassed by the Cowboys on Sunday. Congrats to you Cowboy fans out there, you had the better game. TNA is doing what the WWE is not, they have the ability to have solid wrestling, however WWE has the long time exposure that fans aren’t exercising to watch the competition on a different night and weird hour.

Enjoy your Halloween, if you choose to go out and drink, be safe. If you choose to do a drinking game while watching the ECW show, have a blast. Always remember, for things to change, you have to make movement. Thanks for reading and for all the feedback, feel free to contact me anytime at Bam@4sternstaging.com.
