Pancakes In the Age of Enlightenment: Week 8 NFC West Notes, An Early Look at the Playoff Picture

IF THE PLAYOFFS STARTED TODAY

We’re at a point in the NFL Season where it isn’t ridiculous to step back and see who would be in the playoffs, if it were an 8 game season, which it isn’t. Anyway, here’s what we’ve got boy-o’s.

NFC
1. Chicago 7-0
2. NY Giants 5-2
3. New Orleans 5-2
4. Seattle 4-3
5. Atlanta 5-2
6. Minnesota 4-3

First Round:
Atlanta at Seattle
Minnesota at New Orleans

Bye: Chicago, NY Giants

AFC
1. Indianapolis 7-0
2. New England 6-1
3. Denver 5-2
4. Baltimore 5-2
5. San Diego 5-2
6. Cincinnati 4-3

First Round
Cincinnati at Denver
San Diego at Baltimore

Bye: Indianapolis, New England

And these prominent bigwigs would be out of the postseason:
KC 4-3
Jacksonville 4-3
Pittsburgh 2-5
Dallas 4-3
Philly 4-4
Carolina 4-4

A postseason without TO OR Donovan McNabb? Without Bill Parcells? Ooooh somebody pinch me!!

NFC WEST NOTES

The Seahawks defense is just epically bad. Exhibit A is last week’s 35-28 loss in KC. Not only did Larry Johnson run for 155 yards on them, but Damon Huard threw for 312. The Hawks haven’t given up less than 28 points in any of their last 5 games.

And yet, aaand yet…they still lead their division, and 3 of their next 4 games are at home, with 2 of those against the Raiders and Packers. Their lone road game is at SF.

So, as much as the Seahawks suck right now, and they do suck, as long as they can find a way to beat the Rams at home in Week 10 to sweep the season series, they are going to win the NFC West.
**********

The Rams’ surprising start is at risk of being torpedoed by their inability to stop the run. Last week, the Chargers rolled up over 200 yards on them. They’ve also let NOAH HERRON roll up triple figures on them. This week they’ve got LJ and the Chiefs. That looks like trouble.

Mike Nolan’s Niners are going in the wrong direction. Last year, they were surprisingly competitive. Lately, they are just taking an ass waxing every time out. Their last 3 losses (to the Chiefs, Chargers, and Bears) have been by a combined score of 131-29. They let some key free agents walk this off-season on the defensive side of the ball, and the team is worse than it was in 05 because of it.

At least they are not the Cardinals though. Nobody imagined this team could have started the season 1-7, but here we are.

The Cards latest defeat was a 28-14 stinker in Green Bay in which Matt Leinart looked like he forgot anything he has learned about football in the last 4 years.

The camerlengo was on standby to whack Denny Green in the forehead with a hammer after that stinker, and call his name 3 times, but lo, Green is still the pope of the Cardinals. He even got the always reassuring vote of confidence, from team VP Michael Bidwill this week, “I do not believe a coaching change improves our chances of winning against the Cowboys or any game in the second half of the season, and winning is our number one goal.”, Bidwill said.

Crown his ass!
