Happy Hour: A Few Words on Florida

The BCS, largely laughable and unfair as a method for determining a National Champion, has just been dealt its most critical blow yet, as not only do Auburn, Louisville, and California drop out of contention on what is quickly becoming upset Saturday, but a major #1 vs. #2 Showdown looms and could shake up the National Title picture again.

Well, maybe not, thanks to Florida.

Escaping by the edge of their teeth against a feisty South Carolina squad, the Gators have been dealt a harsh blow to their National title hopes. The reason? Michigan and Ohio State are so far ahead of Florida in BCS points, that nothing short of a blow out can now get Florida ahead of either two schools. What’s more, Florida’s lucky and undeserving win (several missed picks for S.C. and a bad spot on a 4th and short with less than three minutes to go) now keeps Rutgers, a school that’s undefeated right now out of any potential title picture. How unfair, indeed.

And don’t give me this bullshit about Rutgers having no worthy opponents on their schedule to warrant a trip to the title game. Who the Hell has Michigan beat? To date: Vanderbilt, Central Michigan, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan State, Penn State, Iowa, Northwestern, Ball State, and Indiana. Out of those victories, Only Notre Dame and Wisconsin have mounted any sort of impressive season. Penn State, Michigan State, Iowa, and Minnesota are all underachievers this year, and Michigan nearly lost to Ball State of all teams. Meanwhile, their victory at Notre Dame is less impressive than it was when it happened, thanks to the Fighting Irish’s lack of defense and close games to rather weak teams (see: Michigan State).

Rutgers doesn’t have a schedule along the lines of a USC here, but they will have played two top 10 schools within three weeks of each other, both schools that were recently in the national title hunt. I’ll take two top ten schools over a decent Wisconsin team and a vastly overrated #9 Notre Dame football team. And Hell, I like Notre Dame!

Kiss Rutgers and their perfect season goodbye, friends. Just to spite us all, they’ll probably lose to West Virginia and end up playing in the Cotton Bowl, victims of the BCS juggernaut that proves why life flat out sucks in college football.
