The Movie

They say many actors just play themselves in films, as opposed to merely characters, and their success or failure is solely dependent on whether or not an audience thinks they’re likeable. Most actors, though, shy away from repeating themselves in film roles if only for fears of being typecast in a particular role. Its interesting, though, that Steven Seagal has managed to flesh out a relatively successful career by being the same character in the same film over and over again to a small, rabid fan-base that has kept him going as a star in the direct to video market.

Seagal ventures into the direct to video action film market with Attack Force. Seagal stars as Marshall Lawson, head of an elite tactical team that all manage to wind up dead in a seemingly random act of violence. Investigating their deaths, Lawson finds out about a government arm of the military that may or may not be involved in illicit drug dealing.

The film, much like Mercenary for Justice was earlier this year, is basically of rehash of everything Seagal has been doing in the last decade or so his films have been shunted straight to video. While his fan base may be amazingly forgiving and undemanding, thus keeping him gainfully employed, Attack Force is essentially a rehash or repeat of nearly every movie Seagal has done since Above the Law.

Filled with the usual awful, clichéd dialogue that is a standard for a Seagal movie, the film has the addition of trying to have dramatic scoring to give the proceedings a more tense feeling but have the opposite. The film becomes so campy and over the top that only the most forgiving of action film aficionados could enjoy this more than once.

The Audio

Presented in a Dolby Digital 5.1 format, the film’s sound is quite good for a direct to video film. It may be filled with the usual bad dialogue and over the top scoring that ruins dramatic moments, but it sounds pleasant enough.

The Video

Presented in a widescreen format with a 1.85:1 aspect ratio, the film looks better than its $12 million budget would generally dictate. The transfer is quite solid, as the film’s video stands up to any big budget release.

The Extras

All that is included are Previews for The Covenant, Lies & Alibis, Edison Force, Hard Luck, Connors’ War, Shadow Man and Ultraviolet.
