Seven Deadly Days of The Real World: Denver – Pride Monday

Features, Shows

Pride has been called the original and most serious sin to commit. It’s also the source of all other sins. What is pride exactly? Basically, it’s the desire to be more loved or more attractive to others. You also give little credit to everyone else. You love yourself so much that you hate or have contempt for everyone else around you for not loving you as much as you love yourself. It should be easy to see that pride is also known as “vanity” or “narcissism”.

In The Real World, there has been many people who have loved themselves to the point where it sickens everyone else around them. Girls think they are so beautiful that every guy should drool over them. Guys think they are so “hott” or call themselves a “playa” and think that they can get any girl they want. These are the types of people that other people begin to hate in the house.

Some people that commit pride may end up seeing that they are acting in a “sinful” way and correct their attitude. However, there has been just as many times when they continue with their vanity, since they believe that they are “right” and everyone else is wrong”. It’s more or less a game for people with intense pride in themselves. They seek out the biggest audiences and want to be the center of attention of those audiences.

The Denver cast is full of examples of pride. Davis is a good place to start. Although, his pride in himself is not that strong since others like him a lot, he still wants to be the center of attention. He admits that he wants guys to notice him, since he’s gay. However, he also wants girls to notice him. This is odd and really confusing as he says he’s gay, but yet wants both males and females to “want” him. He can pull this off, though, as Brooke admits that she is most attracted to him early on the show.

Next we have Stephen. He’s a Republican, but yet he’s black. He’s very proud of this fact, since it’s apparently unusual. He is proud of being a Christian Conservative as well. He has no problem telling everyone in the house that his way is the “right” way. He gets in an early argument with Davis about him being a Christian and being gay. He doesn’t think that goes together and states that he has a “problem” with Davis being gay. Stephen seems to be very outspoken and although he doesn’t show much pride in his appearance, he shows great pride in his beliefs.

Tyrie is almost the opposite of Stephen. He’s black as well, but he’s proud of his appearance. He explains early that some people at his school think he’s “anti-white”, but that isn’t true as he likes white women and knows they like him. He’s not afraid to tell everyone that he thinks he is great in bed. He thinks all of the girls “want” him and even believes that they want to kiss him, while he is in the hot tub with Jenn and Brooke.

Those are the most obvious examples. However, Alex is a little vane himself. He “hooks up” with both Colie and Jenn and talks to his mom later about being a “ladies man” or a “playa”. He seems proud that he is just that. Along the same lines, Colie tries to get revenge on Alex by going out and picking up random guys. She is proud of her looks as well, but her pride is only a mild case.

In reality, you should be confident in the way you look or the way you act. If you don’t, you could dive head first into a state of depression. However, there is a difference between being confident and being overconfident. When you become overconfident, you become vane. You think you are the greatest thing walking the earth and that everyone should love you. If you have your nose stuck this far up into the air, then you are bound to get hatred from others. Of course, this causes others to “sin” because of your “sin”. But that’s another story…

Sir Linksalot: The Real World: Denver

I'm not embarrassed to say that my favorite television show of all-time is The O.C. I live by the motto "you can't fight fate!" More importantly, I watch WAY too much television, but I do so for the benefit of everyone reading this now. So to my mom and my wife, I say thanks for reading! To everyone else that might stumble across this, remember TiVo should be your best friend!
