“The Downfall of ECW” on SciFi Live Coverage – 12.26.06

Reviews, Shows, TV Shows

Can anyone say “clip show?” I’m going to call the Best of ECW 2006 “The Downfall of the New ECW.”

Tazz and Joey Styles welcome us to this recap. They recap the Tazz vs. Jerry Lawler match from One Night Stand 2006. Not much to recap there, although old school ECW fans got a feel good feeling from watching Lawler tap out in seconds.

Next up we’ve got the Cena vs. RVD match from One Night Stand 2006. We jump into the match with Cena getting the STFU on Van Dam with Van Dam getting the the ropes. Looking back, Cena did a god job being a heel in that match, complete with knocking out the ECW ref and bringing out Smackdown’s Nick Patrick. We jump around a bit and finally get to the point where Edge speared Cena through a table, RVD hit the five star frog splash and won the WWE title.

Man, I really think that the new ECW could have done really well with Stephen DeAngelis. A shame about that, not that the new guy doesn’t do a good job, but damn DeAngelis was an awesome match for ECW.

Next up we’ve got the finish from Vengeance with RVD beating Edge with a five star frog splash.

Next Tazz and Styles talk about how Van Dam was hinted for having two titles. We see the July 3rd match with Rob Van Dam vs John Cena vs. Edge with Edge picking up the victory and taking the WWE title from Rob Van Dam. Next, we’ve got the Big show’s demand for a title match with RVD and RVD’s accepting a title match on July 4th.

Just so you know, they did say that Rob Van Dam’s titles went “up in smoke.”

We jump into the match with Rob Van Dam bringing in a chair into the match and the Big show swatting it away. This match was under “Extreme Rules,” so the chair was used extensively in the match, including RVD’s counter to a powerbomb.

For those of you who don’t know your history, RVD had the match won and Heyman came down to ringside but wouldn’t count RVD the winner, instead choosing to only count to two until the Big Show had the advantage to get a three count of his own. The crowd immediately knew what was happening and began the “You Sold Out” chant almost before Heyman even finished his fake three count.

Styles and Tazz recap the “feelings” that surrounded that night. Tazz and Styles are “shocked” by what happened. This was the most recent moment I remember that the crowd threw trash into the ring. Both guys talk about how Heyman screwed over all of the ECW originals in the process. Man, he’s not kidding.

We’re treated to a Test promo, proving G-d hates ECW when Test claims that he’s G-d’s gift to ECW.

Styles and Tazz are back and talking about how RVD came back from his suspension from ECW and had to climb his ay back to the top. Eventually Van Dam won a non-title match and won the right to win the right to fight for the ECW title.

Rob Van Dam beat the Big show in a ladder match to become #1 contender for the ECW title. He’d go on to pick December to Dismember.

We’re given the introduction of Hardore Holly to ECW and of course the suplex heard round the world. We go right into the tag match between Heyman and Show vs. Hardcore Holly and Rob Van Dam. Holly turns for the second time since he come into ECW and attacks RVD.

We’re back and we’re starting to recap Extreme Strip Poker, Tazz and Styles go back and forth about how Joey got into a little bit of trouble from his wife. Meh. Of course, if you remember, it wasn’t strip poker, but strip low card. This ended with everyone who watched losing multiple IQ points for watching.

Tazz is upset that the boobies, bush and butt were blurred. I hate blurred boobies, bush and butt.

Styles runs down Kelly Kelly, how she is 19, came in with boyfriend Mike Knox but loved CM Punk. This leads to a CM Punk video.

Next!

Do you ever wonder when wrestling announcers know that they are just shoveling shit? Speaking of, we get a recap of the Elimination Chamber and everything that lead up to it.

We jump into the match with only Lashley and Big Show left in the match. Show has the baseball bat wrapped with barbed wire. What else is going on? the crowd is chanting for TNA. Show loses his bat and Lashley attacks with the chair. This gives Lashley control of the match and also means that the fate of ECW is sealed in an envelope marked “CRAP.”

Then again, I don’t know if you can get worse than December to Dismember. I’m sure some people remember the WCW PPV Greed or Mayhem. It’s amazing to think that the match ended with a spear, isn’t it?

We get a few moments from the “I’m done, thanks” video and Styles and Tazz talk about how Heyman was dismissed. Styles and Tazz tease the Show .vs Lashley match and we go to commercial.

This starts the “ERA OF LASHLEY” according to Styles. To me, this beings the “ERA OF DECLINING RATINGS.”

So we’re back and Styles and Tazz are doing their uncomfortable schtick. Lashley vs. Show is shown in clips to make the match seem liek it was actually enjoyable. More attention is given to the Big Show walking away from wrestling. Styles and Tazz discuss why you should “Never Say Never” and Tazz wants to say never.

Lashley’s promo is shown from last week. Lashley + live mic = RATINGS!!!

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any less exciting, we’re given the Test vs. Rob Van Dam vs. Sabu match from the same show. Two guys who know they;re never going to be given the opportunity they need and one guy who needs a god opponent to look good in the ring.

Test won, despite no one caring and barely anyone watching and this ends the year of ECW. Tazz comes into the ring to announce that Rob Vam Dam won a fan vote to fight Bobby Lashley on January 2nd.

Tazz hits a Christmas Tree with a barbed wire baseball bat to end the show and ECW’s year.

Well, no matter who you are, I don’t think that you could have ever imagined that ECW would be as shitty as it’s become. Let’s all hope that 2007 is much better than 2006.

See ya next time.
