After the less-than-stellar success of his last film, Lady in the Water, it is now confirmed that M. Night Shyalman’s next movie will be a children’s film. Titled Avatar: The Last Airbender, it is based on the popular Nickelodoen kids television series.

Night has signed a three-picture deal with MTV Films and Nick Movies to write, direct and produce the potential franchise.

Avatar is set in an Asian-influenced fantasy world permeated by martial arts and magic, and the show follows the adventures of the successor to a long line of Avatars who must put aside his irresponsible ways and stop the Fire Nation from enslaving the Water, Earth and Air nations.

One interesting detail in this story is the fact that although Paramount are said to have registered the Avatar name, represenatives from Fox are saying they can’t do that. A 20th Century employee said, “We own the movie title ‘Avatar.’ There won’t be another film called ‘Avatar’ coming from anyplace.”
