Campus Chatter: Quickie Edition

First and foremost congratulations are in order to my Florida Gators for becoming the first school in NCAA history to win the football and basketball national championship in the same year. It was a wild scene here and once again we proved that we could celebrate with class and not riot and light things on fire.

The Gator defense was downright dominating last night and Chris Leak played the game of his life. In the end Florida’s team speed was just too much for an Ohio State team that relied more on grit than glamour. The loss of Ted Ginn Jr. certainly hurt but you cannot pit all of Ohio State’s offensive woes on his loss.

I’m in between classes right now and just wanted to squeeze in a few news bits while I had the chance.

-On the heels of Bobby Petrino leaving Louisville for the Atlanta Falcons, Louisville has responded by hiring a Campus Chatter favorite, Steve Kragthorpe. Kragthorpe took over a Tulsa team that had lost 21 of its previous 22 and was able to compile a better than it looks 29-22 record in 4 seasons with the Golden Hurricane. Unfortunately for Kragthorpe he steps into a situation where Louisville is experiencing a down-year in recruiting which may only be made worse by Petrino’s departure.

-Sticking with Louisville, RB Michael Bush has elected to forego his senior season and enter the NFL Draft. Many thought he would return next season but once Petrino left, it was just a matter of time before Bush left as well.

-In addition to Michael Bush, some of the big names who have declared early for the NFL Draft are LSU QB Jamarcus Russell, Georgia Tech WR Calvin Johnson and Michigan DT Alan Branch. The deadline to declare is January 15th.

-Florida State has named it’s new Offensive Coordinator and they certainly picked up a good one in LSU coach Jimbo Fisher. Fisher’s departure along with Jamarcus Russell are certainly huge blows for LSU but both Fisher and Russell should flourish in their future endeavors.

-Switching over to basketball, Kansas State super-freshman Bill Walker has torn his ACL and is out for the season. This is Walker’s second ACL tear and many believe it will lead to his NBA stock taking a huge hit.

-Former Kansas center CJ Giles has announced that he will transfer to Oregon State. Giles was thrown off the Jayhawk squad after an incident with a female student.

That’s all for today, enjoy Ohio State vs. Wisconsin tonight and once again congrats to the University of Florida. GO GATORS!
