More Reasons Why Being Deaf Sucks/Rocks – My (Musical) New Year's Resolution

Columns

I still haven’t decided on a New Year’s Resolution.

I know what you’re thinking; “Mathan, you’re like three weeks too late for a New Year’s Resolution.” Right, except that since my personal “New Year” is coming up, I generally push back celebrating until then.

Now that we’ve covered that, I’ve been coming up short on finding a New Year’s Resolution in terms of music. I’m not a musician, so I can’t resolve to make more music. I’m not a talented reviewer, so I can’t resolve to review more music. I’m not made of money, so I can’t resolve to buy more music.

However I can resolve to listen to more music.

There was a point in my life when I’d spend way too much money on music a month. It wasn’t uncommon to arrive home with 7 or 8 full albums and various singles. Naturally some of those albums never made it into my “heavy rotation” pile. In fact, far too many of them didn’t. And I’m resolving to give them their fair due.

So, when my New Year begins I’m going to resolve to pick out 52 albums that got lost in the shuffle and devote a week to each of them.

Obviously, when new stuff drops I’ll cop those albums and give them some attention, but I’ll always have to fall back on whatever the album of the week is. It’s going to be tough, but I’ll make every attempt not to keep a new album on repeat, to give the neglected one time to shine.

It’s going to be a hard resolution to keep, because it’s going to require a schedule. And I’ll have to make a list of what albums I really want to listen to, or rather that I really need to listen to. But I figure I’ll be better for it.

At least musically speaking.
