In what can only be considered a great piece of news for filmmakers and film lovers all over the country, the Motion Picture Association Of America (MPAA) is now embracing the formally forbidden NC-17 rating.

The chairman and CEO of the MPAA, Dan Glickman was at Sundance and met with a lot of studio executives and some indie filmmakers to break the news to them. Glickman advised that this would allow for the movie business to give a bit of an edgier side to the films they produce. Too many films have been “ruined” in the sense that they had to cut scenes or tone down the language and violence strictly due to what the ratings system would allow, but now the freedom is wide open for more then just the unrated DVD’s.

“We are going to talk about this with the Director’s Guild Of America and NATO,” Glickman said, “It’s one of our ratings, and I’d like to see it used more.

On a personal note as a horror movie lover, this is a fantastic decision by the MPAA. So many movies in the horror genre have had to drop down to an R rating or sometimes as far down as a PG-13 rating just to get their movies into theatres and not in a limited capacity. I’m not advocating solid gore and tons of foul language, but this will allow the filmmakers to display their movies in exactly the way they play out in their minds.
