Vitali Klitschko Ends Retirement

News

Former heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko is returning to the ring. Vitali doesn’t plan on taking any warm-up fights after a two-year absence and is jumping right into a world title bout. Oleg Maskaev will be Vitali’s opponent tentatively scheduled for April 21st in Moscow.

“I’ve been back in the gym for a couple of weeks and I feel great,” Klitschko said in a statement. “My injuries have healed and after much hard work, and with the approval of the doctors, I am cleared to continue my boxing career.”

Vitali Klitschko is 35-2 (34 KOs) in his career with two reigns as world heavyweight champion. He turns 36 years old in July and is the older brother of current IBF Heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko.

One person that does not want to see this fight happen is Sam Peter. Peter won a #1 contender fight against James Toney last year. Due to the controversial decision, a rematch was ordered even though a winner was declared despite the controversy. Peter was more decisive in his rematch victory over Toney last month and looked forward to finally getting his title shot at WBC champion Oleg Maskaev. Should the WBC go along with Vitali as Maskaev’s opponent they will surely face some sort of lawsuit from the Peter camp.
