TV Babies: Gilmore Girls, Episode 7-11

Shows

Welcome back. The Gilmore Girls annual winter hibernation is over, and we pretty much have all new episodes into spring…

I’d like to begin our discussion focusing on two characters, Christopher and Anna – and how the writers are doing their best to make us hate them. Note to writers: they’re the enemy, we get it. They are the obstacles keeping Lorelai from Luke and, recently, Luke from April. But do you really have to make Christopher stuff caroling down the girls’ throats, or turn off-screen Anna into the wicked mother who forces April to sneak visits with Luke?

Speaking of Christopher and Luke, has anyone noticed the six degrees of Twin Peaks? Christopher’s ex/Gigi’s mom Sherry (Madchen Amick/Shelly Johnson)and April’s mother Anna (Sherilyn Fenn/Audrey Horne). How could the writers blow an opportunity to get two former Twin Peaks girls on screen together? It wouldn’t even be that far-fetched. Stars Hollow is a magical place, make it happen!

Shifting gears from Fantasy TV to Lorelai: she’s painted herself into quite a corner, as she continues to pretend all’s well as Mrs. Christopher Hayden. As if things weren’t complicated enough, Luke asks Lorelai to write a letter on his behalf for the custody hearing. She’s glad to help, yet seems so wounded when their very official meeting ends with an awkward handshake. Her facial expressions alone spoke volumes in this episode, especially when she and Rory bump into Luke & April at the mall. Witnessing Rory and Luke’s exchange regarding all those birthdays Luke never forgot certainly made her writer’s block go away…

There were also some very effective scenes involving Lane coming to terms with her future. She’s still quite frustrated that motherhood has come much sooner than expected. In retaliation, she’s lashing out at Zach and her mother (not to mention the poor diners at Luke’s). Surprisingly, it’s Zach who’s the grownup and the voice of reason – reassuring Lane that you can be a parent and still rock. Nice to see Brian and Gil as well.

As for Rory, does anyone else get the feeling she’s becoming more of a spectator than a player? The once monumental Christmas in London with Logan is explained away in a hurry, and all Rory seems to care about is patching things up with Lucy, whom she’s been friends with for like six months…

Next week: Lorelai notices something’s not quite right with Sookie, Luke and Anna attend a custody hearing, and Christopher finds the letter Lorelai wrote for Luke…
