The O.C. – Episode 4-8 – “The Earth Girls Are Easy”

We start off this episode with a little idea from Seinfeld. The show opens up with a image of Summer and Taylor in a gas station bathroom. Ryan and Seth are outside waiting for them. Summer and Taylor are stressing about the amount of pee on a stick. Yep, that’s right. They have a pregnacy test. One of them may be pregnant. It looks like Summer is taking it, though. Then, we hit the “rewind” button. That’s right we go back “SEVEN HOURS EARLIER”. Lets find out what the heck is going on here.

It’s New Year’s Eve. Ryan is planning a surprise trip to Las Vegas for him and Taylor. Seth and Summer have no plans thanks to Seth. That’s just the way he likes it. Summer not so much. In fact, she is rather tired of doing the same boring things every New Year’s Eve. Taylor gives Ryan a present and it’s lingerie for her to wear for him. Seth gives Summer a shirt that says “Jamaican Me Crazy”. Yes, only Seth laughed at that.

Meanwhile, Julie is going further on the dark side. Her dating service has now turned into a “prostitution ring” with young males “dating” older females. That’s pretty funny actually. But this storyline gets overshadowed by something else involving Julie. More on that later.

Seth decides that instead of actually thinking of something great that he and Summer can do for New Year’s Eve, he might as well crash Ryan’s Vegas trip with Taylor. So the new “Core Four” take a road trip to Vegas. Before they leave, Taylor explains to Summer that she may be pregnant. Why? It involves Taylor noticing an unopened box of tampons and counting down days in a calendar and remembering what Summer told her earlier. Yes, Taylor is a private investigator. So fast forward, or maybe that would be rewind, to the very beginning of this episode. Taylor and Summer are in the bathroom peeing on the pregnacy test.

We get an introduction of a new character in this episode. A VERY interesting character. His name is Frank. He is an accountant that is friends with Bullit. Bullit wants to help relieve some of the workload from Julie and that enters Frank. But Frank seems to be much more interested in Julie than what a normal person should be. We eventually find out that Frank is not who he said he was. Sandy finds out that this guy has a prison record. But that’s not the big surprise. The big surprise is that Frank’s last name is Atwood. Yep, he is Ryan’s father!!

If you are wondering about the New Year’s Eve in Vegas, let me briefly run that down. It involves alien chicks, a stolen purse with a pregnancy test in it, and a surprise marriage proposal. Actually, a girl dressed as an alien steals Taylor’s purse which has the pregnancy test in it. That leads the girls to tell the boys what is really going on. Once they get the purse back, that leads to Seth giving Summer a “toy” ring and asking her to marry him! She says yes, but Summer turns out to be not pregnant.

I loved the introduction of Frank Atwood. The whole way that was set up was great. I’m not so sure about the marriage proposal from Seth. Yes, I want them to get married, but the way he did was a little “off”. First, despite what he said, it seems that he asked Summer to marry him because he thought that she was pregnant. When they found out that she wasn’t pregnant, it looked like he regretted the decision. Not the way I saw it happening, but as we would find out in future episodes, it’s not how they thought it would happen either. More on that later, of course.

Sir Linksalot: The O.C.

I'm not embarrassed to say that my favorite television show of all-time is The O.C. I live by the motto "you can't fight fate!" More importantly, I watch WAY too much television, but I do so for the benefit of everyone reading this now. So to my mom and my wife, I say thanks for reading! To everyone else that might stumble across this, remember TiVo should be your best friend!
