The O.C. – Episode 4-12 – “The Groundhog Day”

It’s Kirsten’s 40th birthday and Sandy wants to throw her a big surprise party. The Cohens are known for their parties. But Kirsten might have a surprise of her own that could trump whatever Sandy has planned. Yes, their world is about to change.

Ryan and Taylor have broken things off and given each other some space. That doesn’t stop Taylor from wondering what Ryan is doing and watching him outside of the restuarant that he works at. Ryan pretends that he doesn’t miss Taylor, but all he does is sit around and look at the scrapbook she gave him and think about the times they were together. Taylor eventually goes to see a therapist to help with her troubles with Ryan.

In an unique twist to the love triangle, it seems that Che may be stealing Seth away from Summer. You heard me correctly. Che is just getting weirder with all of the voodoo magic stuff and spirit animals and soulmates. Che also has plans to steal the groundhog away from Newport’s local Groundhog Day celebration. He wants to free Newport Chuck. Why they have one to begin with is beyond me, since there is no “Winter” in Orange County, California. Somehow he ropes Seth into joining this mad caper.

Julie seems to be having a secret love affair with someone. We would find out who later, but Julie has other men who want her love. Bullit returns to ask Julie to marry him. That’s right. Kaitlin has been secretly e-mailing Bullit, pretending to be Julie. As a result Bullit has fallen in love with Julie, since he thinks that Julie has fallen for him. Kaitlin seems to only care about Bullit’s money, but really she just wants a real dad that doesn’t get in trouble all of the time.

Che and Seth end up going to jail after attempting to steal the groundhog. The groundhog ends up getting stolen anyways by a girl dressed in a big groundhog suit. Che and Seth believe it’s Summer since they told her it was up to her to save Newport Chuck, since they were in jail. But it turns out to be the hippie chick we saw earlier, who was helping out with the celebration. Or at least we thought she was. Turns out she like animals as well. Che gets one look at this hippie chick, as she takes off her suit, and falls in love. His soulmate wasn’t an otter at all. Before he could tell Seth about his possible love for him, Che realizes that his soulmate was groundhog. So Che runs off with this new girl.

Speaking of groundhog suits, Taylor uses one to “stalk” Ryan in a weird but funny Taylor moment. Ryan does his best stalker impression at the end as well, which was pretty funny. Ryan and Taylor finally both realize that they didn’t need space from each other after all. Taylor was so worried about screwing up a good thing, but finally sees that won’t happen with Ryan.

We eventually find out that Julie is secretly having an affair with Frank Atwood. Once Julie realizes that Bullit would be good for her and Kaitlin, she calls and breaks it off with him. He doesn’t seem pleased. It looks like he was going to ask her to marry him as well. Why do I think we haven’t seen the last of Frank Atwood? I didn’t like Bullit at first, but he is starting to grow on me. He is still slightly annoying, but together with Julie they make a good couple.

The big news finally gets dropped. Kirsten talks to Sandy and tells him that she is pregnant. Yep, she is now 40 and pregnant. Sandy takes it pretty well. He even looks excited about it. So here’s hoping that even with The O.C. being cancelled, perhaps we could get a spin-off show that focuses on the newest Cohen. Let it be a boy and that would be fantastic. Think of it, a show about younger Seth growing up. That’s gold. For now, though, we have 4 episodes left.

Sir Linksalot: The O.C.

I'm not embarrassed to say that my favorite television show of all-time is The O.C. I live by the motto "you can't fight fate!" More importantly, I watch WAY too much television, but I do so for the benefit of everyone reading this now. So to my mom and my wife, I say thanks for reading! To everyone else that might stumble across this, remember TiVo should be your best friend!
