Cable for One – Veronica Mars – 3-14

Shows

I must say I was rather shocked at Lamb’s apparent demise. And what an undignified way to go out. First Lamb shoots his own reflection, then a meth addict gets bludgeons him with a steel pipe. And his last words before lapsing into unconsciousness and eventual death? “I smell bread.” Granted, Lamb’s not really the type of character who you would expect to get a heroic death scene, but that’s a pretty sad way to go.

You may have noted that I used the word ‘apparent’ in the last paragraph when talking about Lamb’s death. I’m a firm believer in the no body, no death rule of fiction and we never actually saw Lamb’s death. All we have to go on is news reports of Lamb being in intensive care and that Keith said the county commissioner said that Lamb was dead; There is still a chance Lamb is less dead than advertised.

On the downside, there’s no readily obvious way for Lamb to still be alive without his apparent death being either horribly convoluted or utterly pointless. I suppose there could have been a mix up with Lamb and Steve Botando’s bodies en route, and that it was actually Botando who died (we never did get confirmation that Sax killed Botando when he shot him, so he could have died in the hospital). Such a slip-up, however, would be remedied in a matter of hours when someone went to identify Lamb’s body (said activity presumably would have happened before the scene where Keith interrogated Mindy O’Dell, (seemingly) the day after Lamb’s apparent death). Pretty much any other explanation delves into conspiracies and other convoluted plot lines. Combined with the fact that Logan’s mother is still dead after her apparent suicide (where no body was ever found) way back in season one and I’m semi-certain that Lamb really is dead. He (and his almost always hilarious scenes) shall be missed.

Lamb’s death also fit in to the Cyrus O’Dell murder investigation as the whole reason Botando was all psycho in the first place was his apparently being framed for the dean’s murder. Though given that Botando is probably dead, and at best, hospitalized, we can drop the ‘probably’, the fingerprint thing was definitely meant to frame Botando.

The writers seem intent on pushing both Landry and Mindy as the prime suspects for the Dean’s death. Honestly, I don’t really have much of a clue as to who the murderer really is. But I will be very surprised if either of them is guilty.

It seems that Veronica and Keith aren’t the only ones who suspect Landry of being involved in Cyrus’ death, given that his phone was bugged. The smart money is on Tim being the one who planted the bug; we know he’s investigating the murder, and if Veronica and Keith have found evidence pointing at Landry, surely Tim has as well.

I suppose I should talk a bit about the actual main plot to this week’s episode. There’s not really much to say however, I didn’t care about Josh or the coach, so it was difficult to really get worked up about what happened to Josh. I guess it was kind of sweet that the coach staged his own death to provide for his family and save them from having to watch him die a slow and painful death (well, sweet in a creepy sort of way). It did also provide Logan a tenuous reason to visit Veronica, while she was in jail. It seemed odd that Logan would visit Veronica, even if he has stopped moping about her, but of course, the real purpose of said visit was to provide a reason for Logan’s involvement in the whole Valentine’s Day Scavenger Hunt.

I suspect there are some people out there who are freaking out about the possibility of Logan hooking up with someone other than Veronica. I think Logan and Parker would make a good couple myself (they were sweet enough this week, anyway). The etiquette is kind of iffy as Parker and Veronica are friends, but they aren’t very close friends, so I think she can still date Logan without committing a social faux pas.

In the long run, Logan and Veronica will get back together. But seeing as whenever they are together, they spent about 75% of each episode being all angsty, the writers should really keep them apart for a while. Ideally they can do a very slow build, and then pair Logan and Veronica back up for the series finale, giving the fans the sweet reunion moment without having to endure the constant angst which is sure to follow.

Next week the Dean O’Dell storyline gets all wrapped up. Hopefully it will be an entertaining and exciting hour of television, because after that, the next episode doesn’t come until some time in April.
