The Shorts:

David Lynch has always been known as a very out there director. Even fans of his work cannot deny the utter strangeness of such films as Eraserhead, Twin Peaks, or Mulholland Dr. Even his more straightforward films like The Elephant Man or Wild At Heart have elements of the bizarre and what some might consider strange for the sake of being strange. Some people love Lynch for his strangeness. Others, not so much. Those people should stay away from this DVD. “Which people,” you ask? “All of them,” I answer.

What’s presented here is a collection of eight short films – ranging from 4 to 30 minutes – that David Lynch made and put up on his personal website. Apparently, this collection is the best of the best. If that is so I’d really be scared to see what was left off. The only remotely interesting “film” on this disc is the last; which isn’t even a film at all. Instead, Lynch sits down and answers film related questions from visitors of the website ranging from his favorite theme music to thoughts on screenwriting.

The first film, The Darkroom, asks the question: Where are the bananas? And does it answer this question? No, of course it doesn’t. It starts out with a woman talking about bananas and leads into these other two women talking complete gibberish to each other. If there was any question as to whether or not Lynch does strange things just for the sake of being strange, these shorts are the answer. And that answer is yes.

It would seem one needs to be completely obsessed with Lynch in order to find any value, entertainment or otherwise on this disc. Take for example the film, if you can call it that, Lamp; which is thirty minutes of David Lynch making a lamp and explaining the step-by-step process. This is possibly one of the most boring 30 minutes you’ll ever sit through.

The DVD:

The Video:

These shorts are presented in fullscreen 1.33:1. All of which seem to be shot on some crappy little digital camera with zero color correction. They look like amateur crap you’d find on Youtube.

The Audio:

These shorts don’t seem to be presented in any kind of special sound presentation, and the sound quality varies from film to film, from crappy to less crappy.

Extras:

The only extras on this disc, if you can call them that, are intros to each film by David Lynch. He talks about how/why each film came about. He talks about each film for only a minute or two – sometimes only 30 seconds. And while it seems he’s revealing something insightful about what you’re about to watch, you realize after you’ve watched it that he offered nothing at all.

The Inside Pulse
I’ve reviewed some crap in my time but I can honestly say this is the first “0” I’ve ever given, so that says something. I enjoy much of Lynch’s body of work. But why this stuff is out there for people to buy is beyond. Toss this in with Dumbland, a series of animated shorts by Lynch, and I begin to wonder if the guy has completely lost it.
