In The Huddle – NFL Update

~ Back-up QB Damon Huard signed a 3-year extension with the Kansas City Chiefs but financial details were not disclosed.

~ DT Hollis Thomas signed a 4-year extension with the New Orleans Saints totaling $12 million.

~ DE Aaron Smith reached a 4-year extension with the Pittsburgh Steelers that will assure he is with the team through at least the 2011 season. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

~ A key player on the Buffalo Bills defense, DE Chris Kelsay signed a 4-year deal with the team worth an estimated $5.75 per year with $14.5 million guaranteed.

~ The Green Bay Packers signed DL Kullen Jenkins to a 4-year contract extension worth $16 million which will also pay him about $6 million in a signing bonus.

~ QB Jeff Garcia who led the Eagles to the second round of the playoffs last year after starter Donovan McNabb went down with a season-ending injury is all but out of Philadelphia. The Eagles reached an agreement on Sunday with 3rd stringer A.J. Feeley on a 3-year extension which almost guarantees Garcia’s exit. Needless to say, Garcia was not happy about the situation.

“I was surprised I wasn’t offered a contract. There was never anything to negotiate over,” Garcia said Monday in an interview with Comcast SportsNet. “We never know what it would’ve amounted to. It wasn’t about the money. It was about being in a great situation.” “We just wanted to have a reasonable opportunity to be respected, to be appreciated for what took place last year,” Garcia said. “Are there other reasons why I wasn’t offered a contract? We’ll never know.”

~ ESPN is reporting that the Miami Dolphins are planning on releasing back-up QB Joey Harrington who they signed last year after playing his whole career with Detroit. This also adds a bit more fire to the rumor that the Dolphins are hoping on landing Notre Dame’s Brady Quinn in the draft. The Dolphins have the 9th pick in the first round, but could possibly trade up.

~ Rumors persist on where Raiders’ wide receiver Randy Moss will end up playing next season. With Art Shell gone and a brand new QB on the way since Aaron Brooks was cut, there was talk that Moss and disgruntled WR Jerry Porter were looking forward to a fresh start in Oakland. But now rumors are swirling that Moss could end up in Green Bay, Jacksonville, or even back in Minnesota.

~ Falcons’ QB Matt Schaub is said to be a hot commodity that many teams would love to have as their starting quarterback. The Falcons aren’t so eager to let their long-time back up go though as they are prepared to offer him a 1-year qualifying offer worth $2 million. That way if he signs and another team wants him, the Falcons would be compensated with a 1st and 3rd round pick.
