LSU Women's Basketball Coach Resigns Amid Sexual Allegations

Early on Wednesday morning, it came across the local news radio here in New Orleans that LSU women’s basketball head coach Pokey Chatman was resigning from her position. It was originally stated that Chatman wished to “pursue other career opportunities.”

Thursday it was revealed that Chatman resigned over alleged sexual allegations between her and a former player on her team. Louisiana State University learned from an employee of the basketball program that Chatman had engaged in an inappropriate sexual relationship with a the former player.

The namea of the employee and player were not released.

The coach who has led the LSU Lady Tigers to a 90-14 record and two Final Fours during her tenure was also a player and assistant coach at LSU under former coach, the late Sue Gunter. Chatman had just received a 4-year contract extension in 2005 paying her close to $400,000 a year ont including bonuses for amount of wins and tournament victories.

LSU athletic director and former baseball coach Skip Bertman assigned assistan coach Bob Starkey as the interim coach for the Lady Tigers’ trip to the NCAA Tournament.

“I respect and appreciate Pokey’s decision to step away from the program now in the best interests of the team,” Bertman said.
