MTV Mix – Volume 32

Features, Shows

If you are wondering, this column isn’t late. The MTV week just lasted longer this past week than normal. That’s due to the special Maui Fever season finale/2-hour movie that aired on Saturday afternoon. So I’m right on time, more or less. Not only do we have the season finale of Maui Fever, we also have the season finale of DanceLife. In addition, we have the usual suspects with some lineup changes. Find out all about that, along with everything else you expect from MTV “After Dark”…

SHOW REVIEWS

SUNDAY

I’m From Rolling Stone

The gang gets together to discuss their next articles with the Rolling Stone editors. Everyone, except Russell of course. He has a cold and e-mails Joe that late in the morning. Joe seems to get really tired of Russell disappointing him.

Tika’s next story is on the “Chicken Noodle Soup” rap song/dance craze that apparently Diddy has gotten into as well. She is also doing a story on Ice Cube, in addition to that. Tika interviews Ice Cube over the phone, but there doesn’t seem to be a lot with that. He is not touring or anything else. Her “Chicken Noodle Soup” story idea is not going that well either. They don’t call her back and when she does get through to one of the DJs for that song, she accidently hangs up on him. She is stressing out.

Peter is doing a story about Lionel Richie and how he is extremely popular in the Middle East. He goes and interviews Mr. Richie. Lionel says that if you can get past the religious wars and politics, people are still people and they enjoy listening to the same kind of songs.

Meanwhile, Russell is still slacking. He does try to pitch a story for the next issue. He wants to do something on Method Man. He interviews him in his hotel room and asks him about ODB among other things. Then, he decides to arm-wrestle Method Man, which MM wins. Russell has to write up something on Method Man by the next morning to be in the magazine next month. He seems serious about getting it done, until he starts drinking and joking around into the wee hours of the morning. The next morning he turns it in, but it’s mess. He decides to drink some vodka for breakfast and then “spork” on the couch with an intern. That’s the funniest thing I have seen in awhile!

In the end, the editors get together to discuss Tika’s work. She had too much on her plate. They had to kill the Ice Cube story, since there was not a whole there. And the “Chicken Noodle Soup” story got shelved as well, since they couldn’t get any quotes for it. Peter’s Lionel Richie article was very well-received and published in the magazine. Russell’s Method Man article was only posted in a blog for the website and not the magazine.

MONDAY

The Hills

Heidi tells Spencer that she thinks that Lauren will come around to them dating, if she spends more time with Lauren. Spencer doesn’t think so, and that is the only thing I will agree with him about. Not going to happen Heidi.

Lauren and Whitney are working this big photo shoot with a big editor for the magazine named Lawren Howell. It’s a young women’s shoot. Whitney says she has a younger sister that could fit the part of a model. Lisa tells her to come audition. Whitney’s younger sister, Jade, does end up getting the job. They actually look quite similar. Whitney doesn’t like being anyone’s “intern” anymore. She has done that for 5 years and is ready to be something bigger. Whitney spends most of the time being Lawren’s “helper”, though, and she doesn’t like that at all.

Heidi is going to Santa Barbara for the weekend with Spencer. She offers the invitation to Lauren, but Lauren says nope! Spencer talks crap about Lauren in Santa Barbara. Actually, he is somewhat right again. Lauren did do the same thing that Heidi is doing now, when she was with Jason. But she learned her mistakes, though, and Heidi hasn’t yet.

Lauren seems to be over Brody, thankfully. Audrina says she went out with this guy after work and they had fun. He has a roommate that is single. So Audrina wants Lauren to come along to meet him. Lauren doesn’t like the idea of becoming “that friend whose friend’s date has a friend to hook up with”. Lauren and Audrina do end up going out with Chris and Blake. Chris is Audrina’s date and Blake is Lauren’s date. Blake is a hockey player, so they think he is tough. For some reason the topic at dinner is Spencer and no one likes him. They say goodbye and Lauren seemed to like Blake. We will see how long that lasts.

Heidi and Lauren were supposed to have plans when Heidi finally got back into town. It was Heidi’s idea. But Lauren had to stay a little late at work and when she got home there was a note for her. It was from Heidi and it said that she went to the movies with Spencer. So there goes those plans! Lauren blows it off and calls up Audrina to go out with Blake and Chris again. They sure know how to drag out things on MTV, but what else is new? I’m ready for either the fatal mistake from Heidi or Heidi and Spencer move off and live happily ever after!

DanceLife

The story of this episode was the Jennifer Lopez performance. We already know that Kenny got that job. But it turns out that someone had to drop out and they wanted Nolan to replace him. So Kenny and Nolan both get to dance with J-Lo.

Besides that, Nolan finally told his dad that he is gay. At first, he didn’t know how his dad would take it but he seems to be coming around. Jennifer Lopez talks to Nolan about his issues. Nolan says this is a big weekend. His dad is supposed to come see his performance with J-Lo.

Meanwhile, Celestina, Jersey, Blake, and Staci sit around and chat. Everyone seems to be happy that Nolan got the J-Lo job, except for Blake. He seems a little jealous, but he has his own thing going. He eventually comes and congratulates Nolan on the J-Lo performance.

Time for the big performance. It’s J-Lo and her choreographers, Rich and Tone, along with Kenny and Nolan. This is what the show is all about. Did I mention that this performance is at a Gay Pride festival? Yep. Everything goes off without any problems, though. Nolan’s dad did come and he was very proud of him.

So I think that may be the season finale of DanceLife. It would be a good way to end things anyways. That certainly was the climax of the whole season. Dancing with Jennifer Lopez on the stage is what the show is all about. If it is the finale episode, I will say this. The show wasn’t that bad. It was slow in parts, but it was interesting to see a “dancer’s life”. And in the end, when you watch a reality TV show you want it to be interesting. This certainly wasn’t the best show, but at least it was interesting.

TUESDAY

MTV messed around with their schedule this week. They moved Road Rules: Viewer’s Revenge to Wednesday nights after The Real World: Denver. That makes sense, since they are two of their oldest shows. They are also moving the season finale of Maui Fever to Saturday in a special movie. So I will have that for you then. On to what’s left on Tuesday nights…

Bam’s Unholy Union

The clock is still ticking down. Missy wants to get serious about the wedding plans. They need to finalize them. Only 3 weeks to go. Of course, Bam just wants to have fun. So that’s how this episode goes. Missy = serious, while Bam = crazy stupid fun.

Bam’s friend, Novak, wants to be the best man. Bam says that can’t happen no matter what crazy stuff Novak does. Bam’s brother, Jess, has to be best man. It’s a law or something. Missy wants Bam to come look at the invitations with her. Bam has brought along Novak and Dico, though, who act like children inside of the place. They get kicked out and Novak proceeds to rub his naked butt onto the store window outside.

Bam and Miss then head to the reception location. They try out the food for the reception and narrow it down. Missy says that no Jack Daniels will be allowed at the wedding, since it doesn’t mix well with Bam. Missy knows she is having a bridal shower, but doesn’t know what that is all about. She tries to find out from her friends, but they won’t tell her.

Bam eventually picks up Missy and takes her to the bridal shower. It is back at their house and there is a TON of women there! 100 to be exact. Oh yeah, Bam picks her up in this purple unicorn horse trolley. The horse is painted pink and purple and has a horn like an unicorn. Missy likes that, except for the wind messing up her hair.

Bam has his own radio show on Sirius satellite radio. Novak still wants to be best man, so Bam punches Novak in his eyes to make them both black so that he can dress as a human racoon. Novak even gets his hair cut awfully bad. Bam doesn’t tell him that he still can’t be best man, since his brother has to be. But it makes for a good TV show! At least, that’s what MTV thinks.

Two-A-Days

This episode was all about college choices. Everyone has to decide where they want to go and what they want to do there. Mark and Brittany want to go to the same school. Brittany is into fashion, but can’t see herself moving far away from Mark. Her guidance counselor hopes that she thinks about this really hard before she decides to go where Mark goes.

Brandon thinks he can play football in college. His choices are Vanderbilt, Standford, and Ohio St. among others. Charlie has already gotten enrolled at Alabama. He and his friend are going to be roommates and they are ready to leave. However, Alabama is only 45 minutes away. So is that really “leaving”? Mark’s defensive line coach tells Mark that going far away from home was the best thing that happened to him. DeJohn’s dad says that he will pay for his college, whether he gets a scholarship or not. That seems unlikely because of his size and speed.

Ross has lots of options. LSU, Miami, Auburn, Mississippi, every school in the South wants him to play for them. But Ross decides to go to Alabama like his brother, John Wilson. However, Ross is going to play baseball there instead of football. He thinks he is better at baseball than football. His girlfriend, Elliot, seems annoyed that everyone wants to talk to him and he can’t talk to her. Stupid high school girl!

The guidance counselor calls Charlie into her office. She warns him about his grades. If his GPA continues to drop, Alabama could revoke his admissions status. Charlie could be forced to go community college until his grades go up. So hopefully that scared him straight! Meanwhile, Ross hears that some of the Thompson players want to break his leg in this game.

It’s time for the Hoover vs. Thompson in the next round of the playoffs. It’s a hostile environment in Thompson. Hoover scores first from a long touchdown run from Dennis. Another long touchdown run from another of their running backs and it’s 14-0. Things start going downhill when one of the Thompson players illegally chop blocks a Hoover player and hurts him. Coach Propst yells at the other coach on the opposite sideline. Thompson’s coach then gives Propst the “middle finger” and Propst is pissed off! Mark then gets undercut on the next play and it’s a brawl! Players are fighting, security is out, Propst wants to beat up the other coach, this is good high school football fun. Mark seems to be alright, though, and everything is back in order..for now. Hoover is ahead 21-0 at Halftime, though.

Before the second half begins, the referees warn the team captains that there will be “sportsmanship” in the second half. Shortly after the second half begins, DeJohn goes out with a big injury. One of his own teammates accidently clipped his leg and hurt him pretty bad. Ross scores another touchdown for Hoover. Hoover end up winning 31-0 and everyone shakes hands. DeJohn could be out for the rest of the year, though.

Wrestling Society X

It appears that wrestling on MTV may be over with! There was no new episode of WSX this week. Instead, we got a “rerun” of an episode of High School Stories. That’s actually an interesting show on high school senior pranks. It’s the most “infamous” pranks ever performed. However, I won’t talk about that show unless it becomes a fixture in the Tuesday night lineup for MTV. So that’s all for that night this week.

WEDNESDAY

The Real World: Denver

Brooke is sexually frustrated. Everyone has had sex in this house, except for her. She continues to flirt with Davis, who is gay. Davis’ boyfriend, PJ, is still around and well there you go. Davis seems to want a “three-way”. I don’t think PJ is into that.

Meanwhile, the roommates’ boss, Chris, calls and tells Stephen, Brooke, and Davis that they must work out with a personal trainer for 90 minutes 3 or 4 times week. That is because they were injured and couldn’t finish their mountain training. Chris wants them to be up to speed. Of course, Brooke whines and complains about fake injuries and basically does 80% less than what Stephen and Davis does. Stephen says that won’t work in the mountains, since they will all climb the same mountain.

Brooke takes out her frustrations on Tyrie! This has to be the funniest thing all season! Brooke is drunk and kisses Tyrie and he is SHOCKED! SHOCKED! Then, he says “whatever” and makes out with her. I love Tyrie. Davis then has to say goodbye to PJ, which is tough. But Tyrie is there to support his friend, even though he is crying. Tyrie says that Davis is a friend, whether he is white, black, gay, or not. He supports his friends.

I forgot to mention that Brooke told PJ that he couldn’t trust Davis before he left. Davis gets really tired of Brooke complaining about everything. She complains about not getting any sex, she complains about working out, and now they have to climb this mountain to finish their training.

They have take a break after starting 5 minutes. Davis and Stephen feel good about the hike so far. Brooke, of course, says she feels bad. Davis wants to know what she wants them to do then? Brooke says nothing in that bitchy tone of voice. And then Davis calls her out on it. He calls her a “bitch” and tells her to not snap at him when he asked her a simple question. Brooke jumps off the deep end again and throws water in his face. Davis then just walks away from the situation as Brooke is nuts. She can’t handle anyone saying anything about her. The problem with that is that Davis has the maps and compass. Stephen and Brooke don’t know their way to the top of the mountain. Stephen and Brooke have the cell phone and they have to take a picture of themselves on the peak. So Davis has to find them and they reach the top together.

Now it’s time for Davis and Brooke to work things out. They apologize to each other. And then they go back to grinding on each other. They are best friends again. This is like a sitcom. Whatever problems they had with each other, gets wrapped up before the episode ends. Other than that, pretty uneventful episode.

Road Rules: Viewer’s Revenge

We started off this week by looking at “The Pit” competition. Susie volunteered to go in from the RV. The viewers voted Angel to face her, which shocks me since that is the second time in a row that Angel has been voted in over Veronica. They compete in a challenge called “Grip Breaker”. Basically, they grab onto a rope and lay on their backs. They then try to break the other person’s grip and get control of it. Susie says that Angel is no competition for her. She is having no trouble hanging onto the rope. So Susie decides to let go and let Angel win! She says it’s part of her plan. What that plan is, I don’t know. But Angel is on the RV!

Ah, so they want drama between Kina and Angel from the last “Pit” competition. Shane says that Angel is a poor loser and will get resentment from everyone on the RV. Hmm, why do I think this show is more fixed than in the past? Automatic drama when Angel walks onto the RV. Angel says she will always have love for her “Pit Crew”. Dan thinks since the RV is half “vets” and half “rookies”, it should be interesting. Still Dan says this is the team now. Shane doesn’t like the fact that the “Pit Crew” went in thinking it was “Us vs. Them”. The bottom line is that once you get on the RV, you are a TEAM! Angel doesn’t think that way and that pisses Kina off.

I should point out that Angel contradicts herself here. First, she won’t apologize to Kina for calling her a “tranny”. Shane is right, that is a stupid word to use. It makes zero sense in the way she said it. So basically she forces isolation on herself by not being a part of the group. But then when she is alone, she says it sucks. Well, then be a member of the group! That simple. To make matters worse, she calls her mom and cries that she wants to come home. I will say this and be done with Angel. She walked onto the RV with this attitude like she was better than everyone else. She pretty much aligned herself with her “Pit Crew” friends, and then shut herself off from everyone. But now she is whining because that happened. She did it to herself! They are just creating drama for the sake of drama. Angel is also selfish. She says she is going to throw the mission, so that two people on the RV have to go into “The Pit” against each other. Wait a second, did they change the rules again? I don’t remember that happening the last time they lost. WOW!

Time for the next mission. This mission is the next “Pit Stop”. The RoadRulers on the RV vs. “The Pit Crew” members including a new guy named Derek. Susie and Veronica are they as well. Susie doesn’t like being on the “Pit Crew. This competition is called “Strong Man Contest”. They have to do things like the “World’s Strongest Men” would do. They have to use a wheelbarrow to move bags of sand. It’s like a relay race.

Shane and Angel are a team for the RV Crew, while Monte and Susie are a team fo the “Pit Crew”. Dan and Tori are the next team for the RV, and Derek and Ivory are the next team for the “Pit Crew”. Adam and Kina finish off the RoadRulers, and Veronica and David do the same for the “Pit Crew”. In the end, Veronica and David falter and Adam and Kina win it for the RV! That’s just round 1. There are two more to go. The next round two members of each team have to climb up stairs, while lifting up this heavy weight. David and Ivory go for the “Pitters”, while Adam and Tori go for the “RV’ers”. It’s a close finish, with some confusion on the winner, but Tori and Adam win. More points for the RV crew. The last event is pulling a Mazda car with people inside of it. Oh, I should mention that Davis and Brooke from The Real World: Denver are here. They each sit on the hood of a car. The RV Crew finish the sweep as they win again. Angel even celebrates with the “TEAM”. They get another $10,000 for the final reward.

Time to vote someone into “The Pit”! Cue the evil music. Adam makes it an easy decision. He wants to go in. He feels strong and thinks he can beat anyone. Angel doesn’t think that is a good idea, since he is the strongest one on the RV. She has a problem with the “volunteer” system, which proves that she doesn’t know anything. They can vote, but I guarantee you that all vote for Adam to go in since he wants to go in. Shane then tells Angel to pick someone to go in and tell them why. She can’t even do that, though. So yeah, she makes no sense. And I’m getting tired of her whining. Kina calls her the “cancer” of the team. In the end, Adam steps off to go to “The Pit”. They really need to stop creating drama for the sake of drama. I know that is what they do on these shows, but this just seems more “fake” than usual.

THURSDAY

Juvies

This episode featured two juveniles. First, there was a 15-year-old boy named Dale. He is a runaway. He plays in a band. He went to practice one day and stayed there overnight. He told his mom he was leaving. He likes playing the drums in his band, because he can get away from his mom and her yelling at him. When Dale came home the next morning, he found that his mom called the cops and told them that he ran away. They just don’t get along. He wants to move in with his father. Dale actually likes staying in juvie, since he won’t have to deal with his mom. Everyone else thinks he is disrespectful to his mother, especially when she comes to visit him.

The other juvenile was a 17-year-old boy named Jeff. Him and his friends were shooting a beebee gun at his friend’s house. The manager of the apartment complex saw them and thought it was a real gun. So she called the cops. Jeff has a better relationship with his mom. They actually get along. His mom tells him to pick better friends. Jeff says he will do better when he gets home. He wants to go to college one day. His fellow juvies warn him about the judge. She is harsh.

It’s judgement time! Dale tells the judge that he wants to live with his dad. Him and his mom have too many problems. His mom tries to lie and say that he has mental problems and did all of these horrible drawings. She has no proof of anything, though. During Jeff’s trial, we find out that he knows a lot about beebee guns. That shocks the judge and his mom. In the end, though, Jeff gets go to home to his mom and Dale gets to go home with his dad.

Dale is still living with his dad in North Carolina. He is doing well at his new high school and his learning the bass. He is auditioning for local bands. Jeff was put on probation until he turned 18. His case is now closed.

SATURDAY

Maui Fever

This was a special season finale/movie for this show. They decided to put the season finale into a two-hour movie on Saturday afternoon. That would have been cool, but basically the first hour and a half of this movie was a recap of what has happened this season. Basically, they combined the previous episodes and put them together for one hour and 30 minutes. The last thirty minutes is the actual season finale episode. So I will save you the trouble and only cover that part here, since I covered everything else the previous two months.

One thing I should note here, though. This movie is ONLY about Anna and Cheyne and Rachael and Chaunte and Anthony. The stuff with Corbin and Sean and were left out of this recap. That’s interesting, since that was the most interesting and unique part of the show. But love triangles are where the drama is at, so it makes sense that MTV would erase everything else from memory. On with the finale!

Anthony is moving away from Maui to go to school. Chaunte doesn’t want to see him go. Chanute says she will miss him. He says he will miss her. She gets to drive him to the airport. They say their goodbyes on top of a mountain overlooking the water. Chaunte knows that Anthony is moving away from her and the drama she brings. She even understands that. She says she is sorry for hurting him and won’t do it again. So maybe she will start acting differently when he leaves. Then again, maybe not.

Rachael, Cheyne, and Anna finish their drama. Anna wants to apologize to Rachael again at a party. Rachael doesn’t want to talk to her. She just wants to “sleep”. Rachael does act “bitchy” towards Anna and when Anna leaves the room, where they were talking, she calls her a bitch. Cheyne wants to know why she is calling Rachael a bitch. She says she tried to apologize to her many times, but she has not accepted it or something. Anna then cries to Cheyne about them “hooking up” when he wasn’t with Rachael. Cheyne says it was a mistake and only wants to be with Rachael. This hurt Anna and she walks away crying, while Cheyne goes to bed with Rachael.

Cheyne talks to Anna afterwards and he doesn’t want this to hurt their friendship. He doesn’t want to keep getting “dirty” looks from her all the time. Anna says that she shouldn’t have acted like that towards Rachael, but that is how she felt. Cheyne doesn’t want that to affect their friendship. Anna says it does, because he can’t talk to her. He can’t be friendly with Anna right now, because of what happened in the recent past. One day he thinks things will be back to normal “friends” between them. He wants a “friendly” hug from her, but she doesn’t think so.

So the “core four” say their goodbyes. I think Cheyne made a big mistake when he chose Rachael over Anna. Anna just seems like a better fit for Cheyne than Rachael. As for Chaunte and Anthony. Anthony should definitely move on without her. Sure, she says she is sorry now but she’s the type of girl that forgets all about what she says one minute to do what she wants to do when she wants to do it. She is selfish. I’m sure there will be a second season of this show to show us what has happened and what will happen to our “favorite” Maui Fever stars. Some people compare this show to Laguna Beach and both shows are exactly alike, except for the fact that Laguna Beach stars are in high school and the Maui Fever stars are mostly in their 20’s. The ages are different, but the drama is still the same!

And that ends the 32st volume of the “MTV Mix”! If you have any questions, comments, suggestions, or feedback of any kind..send them my way!!

I’ll see you next time when we mix things up a bit!

Sir Linksalot: Reality Television

I'm not embarrassed to say that my favorite television show of all-time is The O.C. I live by the motto "you can't fight fate!" More importantly, I watch WAY too much television, but I do so for the benefit of everyone reading this now. So to my mom and my wife, I say thanks for reading! To everyone else that might stumble across this, remember TiVo should be your best friend!
