D2 Review: American Idol : Pick up your phones, people!

Shows

America’s fallen into the Daughtry comfort zone again.
This year’s competition is over. It’s not that I’m saying it’s unfair. But, for Haley and Sanjaya to make it to the final 12 proved what Simon had pointed out during the eliminations: the volume was turned down. And Sundance and Sabrina fell prey to the same knockout that Chris Daughtry encountered last season when he was surprisingly voted out. An overly confident America is tuning in.

Two theories:

1 The population found comfort in Simon, Paula and Randy’s level of expertise and assumed that everyone would vote for Sundance and Sabrina. So America didn’t pick up their phones. Figuring they’re all set to go to the next round.

2 Vote For the Worst is really, really, really good.

However, by not even making it to the final 12, these poor kids probably won’t get the recognition they’ll need to sign a record deal. Although, Simon’s 19 Entertainment seems to have taken a very charitable turn and just may help these kids out.

Speaking of helping kids out it’s about frickin’ time that the producers of American Idol capitalized on the show’s popularity coupled with the interactive format and turned it into a Jerry Lewis Telethon (sans the greasy haired Lewis). By bringing in the corporate sponsors to match donations of the amount of calls coming in was a concept long overdue. Only I’d put a twist on it and match a corporate sponsor with a contestant and as soon as the contestant drops out, the sponsor stops matching. That’d light some fire under the contestants, huh?

This season doesn’t have the fire of last season either. No personalities like Taylor, no crazy wardrobes like Paris, no beauty queens like Katharine, no kick ass rockers like Daughtry and no Pickles. So, they’ve called in their superstars like J-Lo to participate as judges.

So this season’s bringing sexy back, bringing charity back and bringing ratings back.

Too bad we can’t bring Sabrina & Sundance back.
