More Reasons Why Being Deaf Sucks/Rocks – Resolution: Week 6

Columns

This week’s selection is Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons Anthology.

I honestly have no idea what this disc is doing in my collection. I mean, I dig oldies (only oldies radio stations have a chance of getting my attention) but this seems out of left field, even for me. And I like to think I know myself pretty well.

It says it’s an anthology with 26 tracks, but as near as I can tell it’s just 26 different variations on the exact same song. Yes, Jeff, Frankie and Seasons were the Red Hot Chili Peppers of their time.

But before I get too deep into the music, I still can’t get my head around a group with four members being called Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons. Granted, my degree is in English, but doesn’t one plus four equal five?

But I really don’t know why I copped this. I was a passing fan of all of the singles everyone knows (“Sherry”, “Candy Girl”, “Dawn (Go Away)”), but honestly, after you get past track 13, it’s all redundant. I’m a big fan of harmonies, but I got completely harmonized out after listening to this joint.

However if there’s a silver lining to owning this CD, it’s that it completely buttresses my “Mix made up completely of song named after females” that I’ll be sending to my best friend before the birth of his second daughter, later this year.

On a side note, after listening to this I can say that the guys from Jersey Boy, who performed recently on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno completely suck. They so don’t do the songs of Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons justice. And the bar isn’t really that high on the originals.
