Helen Mirren recently picked up a Best Actress Academy Award for her role in The Queen, but it’s now obvious that she’s not afraid to get her hands dirty.

She is taking the role of Emily Appleton in Disney’s National Treasure: The Book Of Secrets which is now filming for a December 21 release in theatres. Appleton is the mother of Benjamin Gates which is being played by a returning Nicolas Cage.

The first film simply titled National Treasure took Gates on a journey for a treasure which could only be found by reading an invisible map on the back of the Declaration Of Independence. Secrets puts Gates in a bit of another goose chase as he looks to find some missing pages out of the diary of one John Wilkes Booth which he intends to use to unravel the mystery of Abraham Lincoln’s murder.

Ed Harris (The Rock, The Truman Show) is also joining the cast to portray the villain in the film.

Also returning from the first film are Jon Voight as Gate’s father Patrick, Harvey Keitel as Detective Sedusky, Justin Bartha as Riley Poole, and Diane Kruger as Abigail Chase. Jon Turtletaub is also coming back to direct.
